My home-made version of this consist of a single electrical wire that connects the ground in a socket to a screw that holds the jack input on the guitar. This solution does not effect tone at all :) This gave me the idea to make my own pin-less plug!

In practice the box connects each ring of jacks to the earth ground and the tips together, if you have a metal shielded jack, you could do with a "Crocodile" clamp ending with a Power plug with the only earth connected...

I suspect a single conductor wire, with an alligator clip on each end, will possibly do the same. Clip on anywhere on the shield of the guitar signal, and clip the other to a good ground might do the same. Make the wire about 20 feet long, so you could be sure to reach to a suitable ground, that will kill the hum. I believe a ground hum is caused by voltage flowing the ground conductors, which is inducing a voltage onto the signal wiring.
@Sascha_Franck
@Sascha_Franck 2 года назад
You're right, it'll do the same. I used that "hack" on my pedalboard for a long time and still have a "ground only" main plug with the cable ending in a little plain copper wire that I can, say, fix under a pedal jack's screw. Works a treat. From all I gather, the reason why this works so well, is that it adds solid ground to otherwise weak arrangements of pedals and what not, hence any shielding works better. I mean, when you power up a pedal board with the usual suspects (aka PSAs or batteries), there's no solid ground connection others than the output running into the target (usually an amp). Make that a battery amp (as in this video) and you're completely doomed already (no solid ground anywhere anymore), but also things such as modeler setups (often running into DI boxes) often are a victim. Needless to say, it doesn't even work remotely as well when using wireless systems, but one should avoid those as the plague whenever possible anyway.

@jeffhigh2
@jeffhigh2 2 года назад
The term "Ground Hum" is misleading, it's actually just electrical noise in the room which your guitar and leads pick up. If you are plugged into an amplifier with a grounded chassis and 3 prong plug then all the noise which is picked up by strings, bridge, tailpiece etc is shunted to earth via the guitar cable shield. Not 100% effective especially on single coils but it works. If you are using something like a battery powered amp or a multifx unit through headphones with a 9v DC power supply, not connected to an amplifier, then you have no ground connection and the noise can be severe. That is where this device is needed. I made my own version 2 years ago, it makes a huge difference.

I thought this kind of problem was fixed using a noise gate pedal. What are those pedals supposed to fix then?
@stuartchapman5171
@stuartchapman5171 Год назад
They have several uses. In high gain situations, dirt pedals, you raise the signal, and the noise floor, electro magnetic interference as well. This is usually quieter than your guitar signal. As your strings ring out and fade, the signal and noise is gated, shut off.

If your mains-powered amp rig is making a hum like this, then you have a real grounding problem with it which needs to be addressed. It is electrically unsafe. Don't rely on a box like this to make it safe. You need to check your power socket for a ground connection (you can get cheap plug-in socket testers from DIY stores and Amazon etc.), then work back along the chain through mains leads, amp, guitar leads and stomp boxes to test for ground continuity. You'll need a multimeter to do this, but you only need a cheap one. A ground box like this is designed for battery powered or computer recording rigs where all the components are powered from double-insulated PSUs with no ground connections. These are electrically safe, but because of the lack of ground, cable screens don't work. Here, a ground box makes perfect sense. It is providing a ground reference for the screening. It should not be used to provide the safety electrical ground for mains-powered equipment.

As I said, this product has its place, and I believe there are similar products with a ground wire to a mains plug with a crocodile clip on the end that can be used for attaching to the metal casings of jack plugs or XLRs to provide a ground reference for laptop-based recording systems where there is no ground and everything is 'floating'. But by curing hum by connecting a good ground to the shield of a guitar lead just proves that the cable shield isn't grounded. But with a mains-powered amp set-up, it certainly should be. If it was grounded with a good low-resistance path to ground (less than 1 ohm or better), then grounding it again won't improve anything. So it's very likely that if it does cure hum on a mains amp, then there's definitely a dodgy or missing ground connection somewhere in the system. With a battery amp or a set-up that's powered from double-insulated PSUs, then its certainly likely that there won't be a ground connection and hum can occur, but the system is electrically safe. This should be the only type of set-up where this grounding plug should be used.

So it's a pass through with the ground being shunted through to mains ground? Possibly be able to add a powered buffer to the unit (or a similar to mains ground, to a buffer pedal), and negate the tone suck somewhat.... As its simply a wire to mains ground. (you can do this simply by adding a single core speaker cable to your buffer pedal ground and wiring it to the ground pin of a plug. For safety DO NOT ATTACH ANY OTHER WIRES TO LIVE OR NEUTRAL PINS of the plug and leave out the fuse (as its not attached to anything). You'd need to drill a hole and moon another jack socket in the buffer pedal though... Or rehouse the buffer in a larger enclosure for ease. I'm no engineer so just taking a wild guess here 😁 Its an interesting product for sure. And a reasonable price that any gigging guitarist can afford to chuck in the bag in case of a dodgy wiring venue.

I am suspicious about connecting the guitar GND to mains directly. If something goes wrong in your household there might be voltage on GND. Devices use GND to drain interference via y or x capacitors or use it to get rid of static electronic discharge. It is connected to an FI, which measures current against this conductor and switches of in case of a device failing or of you sitting an the bath tube with your hair dryer. Until the 70s it was allowed to connect GND and Neutral directly in an installation without an FI. That's what we still have in parts of your house. I think using this GND devices can also introduce additional noise and I see it as a potential safety risk to link your guitar directly to the power outlet in any way.
@themellonfactory
@themellonfactory 2 года назад
If there’s voltage on your household ground your ground is not grounded and your house is a death trap.
@stuartchapman5171
@stuartchapman5171 Год назад
There shouldn't normally be voltage on your mains earth. Look at your earth as a safety valve. It should be a better route to earth or zero potential than you. It should help prevent electric shock and fire in faulty appliances. Neutral or positive are constantly flipping or alternating currents. They are live, they should only connect to earth in the event of a fault.

Looks neat, but I think the problem is actually amplified by your method of testing here. When unplugging the groundbox but leaving it in the loop, the groundbox is surely a glorified long unisolated antenna picking up on a ton of noise. A long piece of wire that doesn't go to ground is just adding more noise. So when you plug it in, it goes from one extreme to the other, which is a bit of a misleading demonstration. For science, you should have made the setup with it hooked up in the loop, and compare it with the noise you get with it taken out of the loop

This only works if you have a grounded wallsocket.

One would hope that all wall sockets are grounded. The ground serves one main purpose. To take errant current safely away. Either from your body to prevent electric shock or shorting which may cause a fire.

If you don’t care about reverb pedals that drip, then you may feel that 60 Cycle Hum sucks. But who would think such a thing?

60 Cycle Hum sucks, but why is Harley Benton discriminating against perfectly legitimate RU-vid channels, making products to shut them down?
