Cleaning a 22 Suppressor the easy way, (less toxic than the dip).

Dead Air Mask cleaning after 200 rounds. The can was pretreated with CRC Silaramic brake grease after the second cleaning, this is the third cleaning and the first time I have run brake grease as a cleaning aid. A majority of the fouling is able to be lifted with just a paper towel and any lead fouling is lifted much easier than in the past with a razor blade as it hasn’t actually bonded to the baffle.

Tried this out and holy crap! It works like black magic. Even the baffle closest to the muzzle wipes clean with no effort. Your Nobel Prize awaits you.

The DA Mask baffles are 17-4 stainless, only the tube of the mask is titanium. You can safely use an ultra sonic cleaner, tumbler, or good old CLR to clean the baffles. I dunk mine in CLR for a minute or two, it eats just about all the powder residue off in that time. I have found the CLR method to be fastest and least messy way.Tumblers work really good too, just takes a few hours.

how do you dispose of the mess afterwards?

I tried grease, but it was too messy. I switched to Pam cooking spray and it works like a dream! After shooting I wipe down the baffles with a paper towel and throw them in ultrasonic with 50/50 Simple green and water for 15 minutes. The baffles come out looking brand new. Then I spray them again with Pam and off to shooting.

Thankf for the tip! I haven't cleaned my Mask as of yet, but I'm definitely going to give something like this a go. I happen to have A LOT of Permatex brake grease which I will try first.

I saw this awhile ago and just wanted to say this is a seriously helpful tip. I just cleaned my Octane using the Silaramic pretreat, shooting mostly lead bullets and the crap wiped right off. I just threw away the blackened paper towels and gloves in the trash. I put the baffles in a wet tumbler for an hour to give them a like new shine. They were spotless. It usually takes me 48 hours or so in a wet tumbler to get them that clean. Where did you hear about this? I tried dielectric grease but it was not nearly as good as this stuff...

Nice. I find that length of barrel makes a huge difference for how easily a rimfire can cleans up. Is the fouling in this video from a rifle or pistol?

@DennRN Год назад
Mainly pistol. I used it on a tx22, Ruger mk4 and a s&w victory 22 along with a 10 round mag from a 10/22 to see if there was further suppression with a longer barrel using Aguila 60gr.

Notice any tone or point of impact changes running your suppressor like this?

neat idea, i'll give it a try. 2 Questions. 1. Would this also make the can quieter since you are running it wet? 2. how messy to shoot is this?
@DennRN
@DennRN 2 месяца назад
No, I haven’t seen a noticeable reduction in sound signature. On the upside, no noticeable increase in sound either. It isn’t messy at all to shoot this way. The grease is thick enough that it just redistributes itself inside the can and the temp tolerance is high enough that it doesn’t flow. I can’t imagine any firing schedule that would get the stuff hot enough to completely liquefy without causing problems elsewhere first.

@@DennRN sweet, thanks for the info. I ammazoned the same grease you are using. I wouldn't imagine it making it louder at all. Was hoping for quieter just since wet can sometimes fix FRP. Granted a 22 can is hard to see a difference being such a small round to deal with. I'm excited though, cleaning these baffles is a pain for sure. Even if it helps a little im game!

I have a rugged oculus, would you still recommend it for this brand/ model? I have just received it and it has not been shot yet.

When cleaning a dirty 22 can how long should you let the grease sit before you start cleaning the baffles? How much grease do you apply when you go to assemble the can again?

You have the wrong idea, the grease is not a cleaner, it’s used as a pre-treat. After your can is clean, use the grease. When you go to clean again, it’ll be far easier.

The sounds in this video are annoying AF. But this is a great video. Just bought some myself and plan to use it on my rugged mustang since it's a aluminum can! Thank you

How often do you find yourself having to clean your baffles? Does the grease attract more fouling vs leaving them untreated?
@DennRN
@DennRN 2 года назад
Clean them on a normal service interval, 250-500 rounds is recommended by dead air but this lets you go longer without having to deal with carbon and lead welded baffles. 22 cal is really dirty anyway so you won’t notice on a 22 can. On 9mm and 45 I’d use this method on aluminum and titanium baffles where cleaning options are limited. For stainless the best method remains ultrasonic cleaning.

@@DennRN thanks. I'm in the market for a mask and am trying to figure out what my cleaning requirements are going to be
@DennRN

@@brumfiba the Mask is the best 22 can and the one that every 22 is measured against, the baffles being titanium is a large plus for weight and strength when in use but the down side is that titanium really shouldn’t be ultrasonic cleaned. The dip works wonders but do your research and you’ll probably come to the same conclusion that a waste product that can poison you easily on accident is probably not worth the ease of cleaning. That leaves manual cleaning which really sucks. Strictly speaking they don’t have to be spotless but molten lead will accumulate along with carbon in a layer about equal to a sheet of nice resume paper for every 500 rounds or so. The base layer is bonded to the baffles with the tenaciousness of spray paint on a well prepared surface, just an utter nightmare. Being able to lift it off with a paper towel is amazing but the only way compare is to shoot a new can a bunch then get to scrubbing.
