Venmo @John-Burbidge-3 to buy me a beer for making these free videos. Thx! :) John Burbidge, author of the book "Watching Paint Dry," shows his method for cleaning a paint brush in the sink (latex paint only). Visit www.howtopaintahouseright.com/ to view a complete series of videos on interior and exterior house painting! You can also purchase the painting equipment John recommends for your job--scrapers, sprayers, brushes, rollers, and everything in between.

As a painter, another step I add to this is go get yourself some of those sunlight soap laundry bars (from the supermarket) they are yellow normally (they are the best brush conditioners ever). You always want to do this step after cleaning, whether it was with water for water based paints or turps for oil based paints - you still want to do this after your final turps rinsing). I wipe the soap bar over the brush bristles a few times then work the bristles into the palm of my hand and you get a good lather. Then get a steel wool scourer and wipe downward starting from the beginning of the metal ferule to the tips of the brush bristles. This will remove 'all' of the remaining paint material remnants including the ferule. Finally use the steel wool scourer to clean paint marks off the wooden handle of the brush. Your brush will look like brand new each and every time, and work like a brand new one too for years upon years. You won't go back. Take it from a painter :)

was looking online for videos on how to clean brushes, couldn't find much from professional painters like myself. This video shows the exact same way that I clean mine, it works great and assures no paint is in the brush. Most all of the other videos never show how to get the base of the brush clean. Just using a wire brush on the bristles is not enough, it will not get the paint out of the inside of the brush. I also use both a wire brush and a brush comb. The wire brush gets the paint off the surface of the bristles while the comb helps get the paint out of the inside. Also not one video aside from this one shows someone running water while the brush is upside down to get the paint out of the base. All that being said no matter how clean you get a brush it will eventually need to be replaced. I'm bout to retire an old 2.5 inch blue long handle thick Purdy brush, one of my favorites and worked like a charm but the bristles are starting to separate and finger out. As far as I know there is no way to fix this problem, but I got my 35 dollars worth out of it.

Thank you so much for your fantastic tips. I've just started painting my house & my edges, I think are pretty bad. I'm not happy so I think I'm going to undercoast the trims again then paint again. The walls are a dark color & some of the dark color is on the white trims. It looks really ugly. Thanks for your tips. I found your video's really helpful. Cheers from Melbourne Australia. A very hot summer this year😎😎. Great for painting, I've got three fans going in the room, which I found really helpful & dried faster than I thought. Cheers 😎🌞

if ANY contractor did what you propose in my kitchen sink, then be off the site sharpish, use the utility sink, all houses , or at lest majority of houses in NA have a laundry area, use that

I would suggest using either a Scotch pad or a stainless steel cleaning pad for bucket (or pan) I like the latter as it does not hold paint and rinses clean. If cardboard case is lost, I found that using a paper towel shroud and using a rubber band around the ferrel (or tape) keeps the shape of the brush. Thank you for your high quality videos and sharing your knowledge.

Don't do this at the homeowners. If I'm using latex paint I use it to paint the inside of the cut-pot, then after many uses and after the paint has built up on the sides of the pot it can be peeled out leaving you with a brand new pot ready to start the process again. Don't use a flat paint, it won't peel off the plastic.

Would you happen to know how I can get paint off my stainless steel sink? I have oil and latex based paint stuck to my sink. Thanks for your help.

buy a small bottle of paint remover. Looks like goop in the bottle. Use a disposable spoon with some gloves on to carefully apply a decent film of the stuff on any paint. Let it sit for a few moments. Towel off with paper towels. You could also use Green (or red) scotch brite, but that will mar the surface of the sink.

How often do I need to clean my brushes if I'm painting a house over the course of a few consecutive weekends?
@howtopaintahouse

RSP Shout Well, going weekend to weekend is stretching it out quite a bit, but if you are careful you can PROBABLY get away with not cleaning them. Check out this video on storing your brushes and rollers overnight. In the case of the roller, for such a long period of time I would completely sink it in the paint in a 5-gallon bucket rather than just soaking it like I do in this video. The real key here is making sure everything is as airtight as possible. Air is what dries out the paint. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iRQvZ6K5bxI.html

that problem with using brillo pads and stainless steel scrubbies and such is it damages the bucket and can leave contaminates in your cut bucket. Tiny pieces of plastic, brillo dust etc. these things will ruin the quality of the paint and thus ruining an otherwise good paint job.

Never run water into the brush that way, reason why is the piece of wood inside the brush swells up and deforms the inner bristles that why you see separations or gaps but that's how you get the brush dry by spinning it between the palms of your hand

But you are actually finding it in the sink and down the sink drain. You aren’t suppose to do that I thought? I rinse mine outside and/throw them away. Never down the drain

Your wasting your time with cleaning the bucket with your brush..Just put it under the running water and tap it..Then use soap to clean your brush the rest of the way..Comes right off with just your hands. If you are having to use a wire brush to clean your latex paint brush then you are letting paint sit on your paint brush to long..also, use a brillo pad, the green ones work fine, to clean your bucket out ..ZIP,,ZAM,,DONE..BUT...To each his own I guess

Lots of ways to clean a brush, as long as you get it completely clean. I often use brushes on a job for several days before cleaning them (I think they perform better as time goes by), so I do get paint built up around the base, and that's why I wire brush. I wrap the brushes in plastic overnight to prevent them from drying (see my video Storing Brushes and Rollers Overnight). But thanks for the comments, I'm sure your way works great.

That's not a good idea that paint is going into the environment ( probably the ocean). I could say a lot more but is there any point !
