I’ve always cleaned mine like you do but haven’t had a steel brush. However I’ve always cleaned in sink not knowing it could hurt my septic system. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge!

yeah, it's just not a good idea to put that stuff down the drain. And if you have public sewer then the chemicals get into the water system down the line. I am always careful of what i put down the drain.

Do you have any recommendations on how to clean a paint roller and a paint tray? When you dump out dirty water where do you dump it? I was thinking of leaving it in an old 5-gal paint bucket and letting the water evaporate. Thank you for this insightful demonstration!

Yes! Use paint tray liners and don't wash them. Just buy a bunch of them. After painting tip them and pour the paint back into the can when you're done and use a brush to get as much paint in the can as possible. Then let it dry and it will be good to go again! As for the rollers I've never had any luck washing them, they always get hard even when I wash like crazy, so I throw them away

How do you do that for a roller, or do you just dispose of the roller? I have only one kitchen sink that has a disposal in it.

I've tried to clean rollers with those metal grates you put in a bucket and with spinners or those 3-in1 scraper, brush, roller cleaners but never been able to clean it good enough no mater how hard I try. I did recently get forwarded a product but I can't find it with a quick google search but I am seeing lots of products out there that you hook up to a hose and basically use water pressure to do it. In theory it works so maybe check for that!

What is the difference if I pour all the cleaning liquids outside or down my in-house drains ? Either way it ends up in my soil, sewer etc?

yeah it's gotta go somewhere. I personally think it's better to throw it in the weeds than down the drain into the sewer system. I also don't want to put paint into the plumbing drains in my or my customer's homes

I was researching this and came across your video, but I also found a product that removes the paint solids from the waste water. So instead of pouring the dirty water as is outside, you can filter out the paint first. The “Crash Paint Solids kit” can remove acrylic paint solids from up to 16 gallons waste water. It causes the paint to clump then you filter it out and throw that in the trash. The waste water is then much cleaner if you pour it outside.

Nah, I don't think so. I just looked Crash Paint Solids kit up. It costs $60! If you are just a DIY painter, it isn't worth it.

I totally agree with your method, but I can't do it this way when I paint at my mother's house because she's against putting any waste paint anywhere in her yard for any reason. Which stinks. If you can't pour it down the sink OR in the yard, it is a tough situation to be in.

yeah where does she expect it to go? unfortunately it has to go somewhere. At least in the weeds will get filtered out by the dirt. Down the drain goes into the sewers and water system

Surely we shouldn’t be discarding toxic paint into the environment? It all ends up coming back to us in the end and we’ll end up drinking it, or it raining down on our crops!
