Pretty good guide, however, there are a couple things I want to point out. Removing the decorative front plastic is easier to lift from the side as you did and use a plastic spudger at the back (closest to the disc drive) to disengage the tabs as you slide it to the left. The other thing I want to point out is at the end of the teardown you state that the board is glued in place and users shouldn’t proceed any further. This is incorrect. The board is held by thermal paste and users who are experiencing loud fan noise should remove this cover, clean the old (and probably ineffective) thermal paste from the chip and heat pipe with at least 91% isopropyl alcohol, and apply fresh paste making sure to cover the entire main chip as well as the smaller chip before reassembling the unit. Old, hard, and ineffective thermal paste, as well as a dirty clogged heatsink, are the most common problems that cause over-heating and a loud fan

@Vigerp Thank you so much for the tutorial. My PS3's fan was spinning at full speed even when not playing a game, so I assumed that it was overheating and needed a clean. Thanks to your tutorial, I managed to take it apart, give it a good blast with compressed air and put it back together again (sometimes where it all goes to pot!). Great video, thanks for making it. However, 18:20 - When you say there's no reason to go beyond this, there is. The logic board comes out relatively easily and you'll then have access to your thermal paste/compound. My PS3 Super Slim hadn't been opened since I purchased it in 2013, and the thermal paste was completely dry. Ordered some Arctic paste from Amazon and am hoping to give the heat management components a boost! I've got an issue where the system freezes while trying to join GTA V online, so this is one attempt at trying to get it to work. Failing that I think it'll be a 'database rebuild'... or an upgrade to PS4 Pro at a later date.
@Vigerp
@Vigerp 4 года назад
You are absolutely correct. Changing the thermal paste is always a great thing to do. When I made this video, my idea was to create an easy tutorial for people with very limited knowledge of electronics. For that reason I didn't go further into the console. I was afraid that a lot of people would do an improper job, or (in worst case scenario) not apply thermal paste at all. I should've made it clear that people should always change the thermal paste when taking a system apart, and made a separate video on that specific topic. I've learned a lot from my old videos, and it is this kind of feedback that will make my future videos even better. Thank you so much, Jonny! I hope you get to enjoy GTA V soon. :D

I've never tried to use Hydrogen Peroxide as a cleaning agent, but after researching it, it seems to be a very efficient glass cleaner. The only thing I would be concerned about is that you would have to be very thorough in drying of all the moisture, since H2O2 would not evaporate at room temperature like isopropyl alcohol.

As you adviced not to take it apart any further (because the fan was 'glued on'), I didn't plan to. But it came off all on its own..only held together by the thermal paste. Can never hurt to replace it when you get this far inside the PS3. Great tutorial nevertheless! Couldn't have done it without it.
@Vigerp
@Vigerp 6 лет назад
Yeah, I should've been more precise. I made the tutorial with complete beginners in mind, and so using the word "glued" seemed the most appropriate. Basically, I wanted people to leave the thermal paste alone, as if it is done incorrectly it would cause the whole system to malfunction. Basically, I didn't want people to constantly comment about how their systems were destroyed in the cleaning process. However, I am glad you seem to know what you were doing, and you are absolutely right. The best cause of action is to replace the thermal paste, whenever you open up a console.
@RJ-cq8dd
@RJ-cq8dd 6 лет назад
Vigerp Ah I see. But that beginner friendly approach can cause problems too. Removing the metal plate from the motherboard can break the thermal paste seal (happened to me). Beginner or not, everyone should reapply thermal paste when that happens.
@Vigerp
@Vigerp 6 лет назад
I do have another video ready that I am going to upload tonight, which shows how to reapply thermal paste, but it is not the focus of the video. I'll make a dedicated video on just thermal pasting.

This video is no nonsense and very helpful. I bought a ps3 super slim really cheap that was too loud and needed a serious deep clean. Two things I want to say though - 1) when you tell me to throw some plastic parts in soapy water, I wish you also told me how to dry them. I'm probably going to wait until tomorrow morning to put this back together. It's mid winter in the northeast US and I still feel like putting it back together right now would lead to serious moisture problems - I also don't have a hair dryer because I wasn't a teenager in the 1980s 2) Even though the "heat layer" is glued to the motherboard... it's almost ten years later since ps3 super slim launched. I would like, subscribe, promulgate and possibly fellate a channel that gave specific instructions on how to disassemble, clean, refresh the thermal paste etc, really getting into factory restoration hard core. I came here because I needed to know how it was built, not because I was afraid if I broke it, it wouldn't be covered under warranty. Break the glue and tell us how to fix it later

Thanks so much! I did have to go even deeper though (and so compliment this with another video) because when I got it in 2014 it was already second hand & I had to change the thermal paste. So as others have mentioned, maybe do another video on that: if you go this far, you can go even further. My PS3 is now silent and runs beautifully, so thanks again.

100% my favorite version of the PlayStation 3. Fewer moving parts to break, the disk can never get stuck, and people sell it for less because they see it as "cheaper." I swapped my old Phat model for this one when the GPU started going bad and I never looked back.

@KlingonCaptain
@KlingonCaptain Год назад
@ART__ 384 Need for Speed Rivals freezes on the Xbox 360 as well. As far as I know, it's a flaw in the game and not the system. I wish they would patch it.

Thank you so much for this video, I bought a used super slim and used this video to fix a messed up optical drive cable, replace the cpu shielding because the old one was extremely rusty and swapped in a new shell.

@@Vigerp I do notice it still gets pretty hot on the side with the fan. I wasn't able to get all the dust out at the fan. Would that be the cause of the heat?
@Vigerp
@Vigerp 3 года назад
@@RyanSheriff Most likely, yes. You should have noticed a drop in the temperature after your cleaning, though. If not, it is possible that it is overheating due to some other issue.

If you want to change thermal paste you need to take the mother board off from the fan ect. And it is not clued together but there is couple metal things that keep the board on the fan base, but it comes off easily.

YEES! Thank you. Followed this to the letter. This was my first time dismantling my system, but, you wouldn't know it with your instruction. My system is 8 years old. EIGHT. Today was the first time she overheated and shut off. I panicked, realized my system was looking its age, and found your channel. Thank you for the in-depth explanation and the reassembly. Thank you for not putting in filler music and just getting to the point. You are very much appreciated. *edit was for counsel age.

@Vigerp
@Vigerp 5 лет назад
Removing ribbon cables are not very difficult. You just got to be careful not to damage them or pinch them too hard. Typically, if you are using your hands you will have no problems. Just don't try using screwdrivers or pliers for extra leverage. However, any cleaning is better than no cleaning. :)
