This is a great video. Thanks! Some Okatsune tips: Sap build up can be eliminated by dipping blades and rubbing off every 10 minutes during use with simply water in a bucket with a tiny splash of household bleach. A quick sharpen after every use removes the need for a whole resharpen as in the video. Do this gently with a soft stone along the factory angle. 2or3or4 strokes ( you’ll feel when it’s right) both blades then remove burr on the flat very gently with one stroke ( as stated in the video the flat side is as important as the angle so KEEP IT FLAT!) Finish by lubricating as in the vid. You could use WD40 or such like for convenience. Using this I have kept my shears in good order over 5 years ( heavy use all year professionally ). Now they need the ‘treatment’ and thankfully this guide has shown how.

Three years after my comment but I had add. Lubricate blades with WD-40 or a similar product when cleaning with razor blades. MUCH easier and faster. Also, using a scraper handle such as a Titan 12030 is much safer around sharp edges. Regardless of how dirty and gummy your shear blades are, if it takes longer than two minutes to clean all four edges you're doing something wrong. LOL Enjoy and happy shearing. The Super Clean is even more effective if you allow it to sit for 30 to 45 seconds on the dirty blade to soak into the sap and gunk on the blade, before you start trying to wipe it off. Try Camellia Oil on the blades to prevent rust and keep them lubricated - that's what the Japanese do, and a small bottle lasts for years. Thanks for the tips on keeping Okatsune Hedge Shears in shape - I have a pair and look forward to using your tips to keep them cutting perfectly.

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I just received a brand new pair of Okatsune shears and the blades are quite loose when the handles are opened all the way. They don't get tight until I close the blades about 1-1/2". Does this sound normal or should the nut and bolt that holds the blades together be tightened? I hate to start making adjustments to a brand new tool. I also noticed there is a very small micro bevel on the backs of my blades and they are not perfectly flat like you describe in the video. The back bevel is about half the size of the small bevel on the front side of th blade. Maybe this is something new.
Hi Paul, Thx for the tips. fyi, since you are a fan, thought you might want to know how to pronounce Okatsune. It's like Mi-tsu-bi-shi, with all syllables of equal emphasis. The tricky bit is the last syllable, because it's not a silent e: Oh-ka-tsu-nay. The "tsu" is the same as in Mitsubishi, also!)
btw, I really love the Okatsune pruners, but I've heard it has to do with hand size. People with smaller hands (often women like me!) tend to prefer Okatsune, Felco seems better suited for larger hands.

I've used felco 2 for over 20 years. I reacently bought okatsune clippers,. Very nice but I still like the felcos more. Topiary pruning is defiantly on the list. Thank you!
Do you keep the wet stones in the water all the time or just when you're using them? You can hear the resistance when you first grind then the noise goes away as you get that edge.
I put the stones in water a few minutes before I begin. You can see the bubbles come out of the stone as it absorbs the water. You need to put the stones back in periodically to keep a wet edge. The finer grit stones will make less of that grinding sound ( though the sound is kind off soothing to me).
Nice job. You can seperate blades to work easier. What angl/degrees to you sharpen. Knives as I understand is at 25dgr. But thats both sides. Scissors have flat and angled side...........?
I watched 2 other videos before this one and all I saw was they sharpening the blade with NO instructions explaining what they were do or what tools they were using. Thank you for your tutorial no I can try to sharpen my clippers.
