Cleaning Brick--Angle Grinder Vs Wire Brush

I tried using elbow grease and a hand held wire brush with marginal success. This video details the difference that power tools makes in cleaning plaster off your brick walls.
All in all, this project took me about 6 hours to finish 250 square feet of brick. It made a HUGE mess not just on the first floor but also made its way up the stairs some too. Don't tackle this project unless you absolutely HAVE to!

As someone who restores period properties, this horrified me! The face of the bricks should be protected, rather than ground off completely. All of that red dust is literally the brick itself being worn down. This not only weakens the strength of the brick and encourages cracking but also leaves it open to moisture uptake. The bricks get sealed in the kiln when they are made. If you have old bricks that you want to care for, scrub them with a brush and use eco friendly brick cleaner to remove dirt, messy mortar or soot on the surface but embrace the colouring and the marks of the past.
@dgilroy20

This doesn't make sense to me. People sandblast bricks all the time for years. Are you saying people have been doing it wrong all these decades?
@xavierwright
@xavierwright Год назад
@@dgilroy20 blasting removes the dirt, if done with the right grade material. I’m considering blasting to clean my brickwork. This video shows grinding the face off the brick. It’s not really cleaning. I don’t clean my hands by removing the skin.

Okay, maybe it was a bit to abrasive against the brick, but it will make everything look good, as long as everything looks uniform. You can also apply a sealer to protect the bricks from moisture. I personally would use a mechanical wire brush.

I revisited this video and i reread the thread...i followed the suggestion to use a knotted wire cup wheel. Wow this is really the best way to do it. Especially if you have a variable speed grinder like i do. Because you can slow down the grinder to touch up here and there. Much gentler on the bricks than the diamond blade u used yet very effective. I sprayed the wall down with water n experianced no smoke like dust or whatever. Safety glasses and gloves are a neccessity tho. Ill try And make a video

@Heloise O'Byrne paint over brick can fail over time if proper primer or chalk paint wasn’t used. Some ppl actually like the peeling paint look for aesthetic purposes they try and emulate it or do a German wash I believe they call it. usually the easiest way is to just paint over painted brick because once it’s painted it’s really difficult to get off. plaster doesn’t stick to brick the way paint does. you wanna go from painted brick to plain red brick find out if it’s oil based n use a solvent. I doubt it’s latex idk but if it’s an exterior wall do not damage the brick face or you’ll end up with the brick Spaulding I think it’s called where water gets in and cracks the whole brick then your fucked your wall will slowly crumble
@ImanuelMesiah
@ImanuelMesiah 2 года назад
@Heloise O'Byrne I’m gonna warm you right now because I have exposed brick in all my houses n I did it all by hand myself… if you’re going this rout you’ll be spitting black. Everything in the entire house will be coated with a thin layer of red brick dust. There’s no way to contain it.

My guy... Wet the wall down, then have someone that can control the dust with a fine mist of water. Your neighbors and family will appreciate it, trust me. I’d recommend using muriatic acid to clean the wall, though. Those tools are going to create a huge mess that’ll literally take weeks to clean up. The plaster/grout will come right off with a light MURIATIC ACID WASH. Wish I could of helped before you spent all that money on tools and created that dust cloud in your house. Good luck 👍

I'll be honest with you bro... my buddy suggested i get the plaster residue off with a cup grinder... he suggested it would smooth the brick from where the chipping gun damaged the masonry a bit here and there... N Now I'm super happy I watched your video so I will never try to do no stupid shit like that lmao.. First off if you are dumb enough to it this way you should not waste money on that golden grinder blade when a cheap carbide blade should do just fine imho.. But yeah I think Muriatic Acid might be a better choice if your not trying to wire brush by hand with a bucket of plane water. Great video anyway... keep up the good work I enjoyed it!!
@SpiritofaHandyman
@SpiritofaHandyman 7 лет назад
It definitely did make it super smooth. If I pushed too hard it would leave little circular cut marks in the brick though, so it was a pain to get it looking flat without those cup marks
@ImanuelMesiah

I guess Thats a great benefit you can only get with the grinder... I wouldn't worry too much about the structural integrity...but I think I'd pick n choose which bricks I'd smooth... try one or two n see if I like the look... might make a video too n shout you out...

Serious question... not being a smartass... but doesn't either of these methods damage the face of brick? I am facing a similar situation. Have been told to just use a scouring pad with water. Old bricks are much softer than modern ones being the reason.
@SpiritofaHandyman
@SpiritofaHandyman 7 лет назад
If this were an exterior wall then yes, I would avoid this method for cleaning because it could leave a gouge in the brick that would allow water to collect and could eventually lead to spalling. With an interior wall it doesn't seem to be a big deal. You are right that older bricks are much softer than newer ones. They are also made of a different material--more lasting, from what I've read.

I Polish concrete. A turbo cup is not a cleaning device. It will gouge concrete and brick. I use them to remove epoxy and to cut out high spots. Your not cleaning the concrete your cutting the top layer off as these are incredibly aggressive. For cleaning concrete and brick spray with water and use a polisher with a Scrub Pad or Nylon brush for cleaning. Wire brush to remove paint, drywall mud, etc. Turbo cup for resin, stain, surface removal. It's better to take your time and do it right then rush and butcher the surface.

Since I had never used one, I watched a couple of youtube videos and I'm so glad I did. Some really good safety tips, which I followed, and this tool did a splendid job. One good thing to know is the weight of the tool puts just about the right amount of pressure on the metal I was cutting, so I didn't have to use a lot of pressure, which is more likely to jam the tool.
