Well, apparently there is a secret army of us who haunt the stores saving neglected plants! My biggest complaint is the fake flowers that I find sloppily glued on cacti and then they are left unattended. Carry on you good work!
Patricia Lisowski I so agree with you. Just got beautiful manmilaria elongata and glue was so bad that it damaged few tops 😏. That was really annoying. Why they think anyone likes those glued blooms?!
That's v. true patty moo & they spay em too; Kerrazzy baby! makes ya wonder what they coat the staff loo roll in so as to turn em all into desensitized robot thingies?
In ikea theres so many neglected cacti that are put in plastic boxes under the table barely getting light, some of them are in good shape, some are dry and some... are dead 😢😡
*I love rescuing dying succulents at big box stores!! You are a very good plant mama!! And great deal on the pots too. Sometimes I was to to buy them, just because I feel bad for them. They look so much better already! 🌿💚*
They became totally different plants when you clean them up. The poor guys. Your house will be the paradise for them now after what they gone through . Well done Marija. Waiting for the update video. I wish the plants will survive.
I am so glad I am not the only one who buys dying plants from big box stores for the pots they're in. I love the bargain and like you showed, sometimes they can recover. TFS!
You are not the only one, I do it all the time. Lately, I've purchased several orchids from Lowes for $1 or $2 and I'm trying to revive them. I love the challenge and watching them come back to life. It's amazing what a little tlc can do for an otherwise throw away.
The final look was definitely an improvement. The succulents were still quite dry looking but in better shape. You are truly a thoughtful person. ❤️❤️🌵🌵🌱
Well done great buys - really makes me so mad all these millions of beautiful plants delivered to these shitty shops in perfect condition then just left to die etc and thrown out or sold off for peanuts! The store owners need a good kicking 😠
Collector Guy I agree! I was just recently thinking how these plants are sent to death sentence (half of them at least). I don’t understand why are stores so careless.
Collector Guy: I know what you mean.. I have just started my collection of succulents and the plants at my home depot need water! I dont work there but feel like watering them just to help them survive. I'm there trying to pull out the dying stems etc..😅😊
I know I'm very late but I'm actually a front end associate at Lowe's so I see first hand at what really goes and it really isnt just the garden associates being lazy or careless its mor for less just being under staffed and not being able to properly care for them. Right now we have our manger for our gardening center having to run both garden and seasonal and being the only one who actually knows to to care for the house plants we have. I'm a succulent lover and I'm always on the look out for clearance plants and our garden manager knows they arent well taken care of and will discount almost anything that isnt brand new (I'm talking like orchids that we've had for a month going down to like $5), also home depot takes better care of their plants so if anyone wants good succulents for a good price I would go there first.
@@mollyrossi5012 wow thanks! I am always on the lookout for well priced succulents. I don't mind now asking for discounts if they don't look good or are about to die, maybe I can revive them, if not, I can get a nice pot for future plants.
Great project, and what is most impressive, is that you patiently keep answering peoples questions, its not something others do. Nice to see the rescue work on your part and some of your viewers. It is a shame that the big box stores do not take better care of them. Appreciate your great information
Interesting video but not quite complete in its information. You said that you use alcohol and some oil that I couldn't catch the name. Please, what kind and percentage of the alcohol you sprayed? Exactly, help us to recognize the parasites, do they infest the root or the leaves? Include the oil's name as well, and please how, where, or when to use it? All that would help A LOT!
TN1061 I use 70% alcohol from any grocery store. If it’s 90% alcohol it has to be mixed with water. I also use organic 100% neem oil. In this case I ended up using alcohol. I use either neem oil or alcohol. I haven’t seen any pests on roots but preventatively I sprayed the roots as well as the leaves. I have shown mealy bugs for a moment, they look like mini cotton balls. I saw no other pests. I do have other videos where I talk about aunts, mites or aphids. Hope this helps! Thank you for your questions! 😊❤️
I just found you. Love the video. I guess there are succulent creatures out there like me. If you get a pot without a hole you can drill one with mason drill bit. Drill under small stream of water to keep cool and go slow.
I am going to check out the clearance section at Home Depot, Walmart and Lowes. And if I find some that don't look so good, I will ask for discount. Thanks Marija for the idea, I didn't know it would work.
So true about the containers. You got some good bargains with the pot alone should you not be able to rescue the succulents. Awesome rescue & great deals 💯
Very interesting and helpful info.. Easy/nice voice to listen to. Please make a video showing a close up of the mealy bugs, the treatment with neem oil -what is that? Why are pot holes important? Why do you spray tops of leaves with alcohol? How do you completely clean the roots? Why new soil? About how long do you keep them away from others? What is the concern about soft leaves? Thank you!
Trac McNguyen 😄 good idea! Though here where I live Home Depot never has sale on succulents. All Lowe’s stores had them every year. I don’t understand why. They would rather let them completely die than discount them. Maybe it’s this particular store and not all Home Depot.
Great find! I'm a pot-holic ! If I see a nice pot, even if it has an ugly plant in it, I buy it for the pot. I love those shallow clay pots; those are had to find.
thank you for this amazing!I am fairly new to succulents. So you're video has shown me what to do with succulents that are reduced or struggling at the store. I was just at Home Depot and I think it was like July 11th and they had huge wire baskets with that coconut coir fiber in the pot. they were supposed to be $30 a basket and they have about 10 succulents in and they reduce them to 20. The one I bought had a handful of string of pearl strands that's the reason I bought it but there was no hole in the bottom of the plastic liner in this fiber liner. We had just gotten a lot of rain and I don't think the lady who was watering realized succulents need to be dry so you could bring out the soil it was so wet. I've taken them all out to try to get them to dry up and then I'll report it plus I put holes in the plastic so it can drain. I've been watching Maria on Maria's gardeningshould read Maria's Garden on RU-vid. You might enjoy watching her because she has her own succulent nursery and everything she sells she has grown herself. she's amazing and I've learned so much from her. And she stepped specializes in desert roses. I have gotten brave enough to start my own RU-vid channel. I couldn't change the name to something that had to do with plants so it's just Kathleen Murphy and my first couple post have to do with orchids and coleus so if you put orchids or coleus along with my name you'll find my channel. I just started with Orchids last November and I now have probably 40. Another lady and man on RU-vid showed me how to take care of them and that was Rick of Rick's orchids this shows me how all the nutrients worked in orchids and he has a lot of different ones has a background in Hydroponics he's great. He has a sansevieria that he's had for years and it's blooming and he has a huge 200 lbstaghorn fern part of that weight is from the metal hanger that it has. He has to have people help him bring it in for the winter amazing plants over 20 years old I think. Also Caroline who lives in Canada she combined her name and her husband's name Jack and hers is Jacqueline's orchids but you have to spell Jacqueline j a c o l y n to get to her Channel. She's the reason I'm addicted to orchids besides all my other planet dictions.should say addictions plants. I'm using the microphone on my tablet and it's hard to go back and correct things. it's very easy to speak unless my tablet do the writing. I also use the microphone on my cell phone keyboard but I'm not on my cell phone right now. Caroline lives in Canada and has a greenhouse in our backyard and also overwinters a lot of her plants like geraniums and in the spring grows all her tomatoes and cucumbers and things like that for her vegetable garden. She's a wonderful person but please go to my channel Kathleen Murphy and add orchids or coleus 2 the search engine on RU-vid. I would appreciate any technical help on how to make my channel better with my cell phone I don't use a computer. I'd also like any comments that could help me be a better plant caretaker how much does a plant mother there are like my children are my babies. I love my plants and if you go to Maria's Garden she loves her plants and is kissing them all the time. She also has flowers in her hair or branches of Bougainvillea or 4 Milly is hanging from her hair sometime so she's very entertaining to watch should say bromeliad not 4 Milly don't know how my microphone got that accept I guess I didn't enunciate the words correctly. Just found your station and I love it hope you don't mind I make loan comments take care of my new plants friend and thank you for all your information here
pat taylor it’s 70% alcohol that you can find in any grocery store. Just make sure they don’t go on the sun right after you sprayed because they will burn.
hi marija, it's been over a year, how are some of these plants doing?? it is so good to see plants rescued, I hope you will rescue more and post those stories!
Holy cow! The cheapest clearance plants at our Lowes is 50% off despite the condition of the plant. Never that cheap. 😔 You got great bargains and some great plants to boot!
You know, they don’t do these clearances anymore 😏. It was few years ago and I think they now do the most 50% and at times there are no plants left just basically pots with dead plants.
Interesting! Ours do 50% clearance plants that look rough, BUT they don’t seem to put succulents there anymore. They keep super damaged, rotting succulents at the full price! It’s an abomination. 😑
Good luck with that.. Lowes is a place that ignores succulents and kills them and still has them at full price! It's usually the rare or unusual plants that are dying or dead..
His is the time of year I buy succulents for discount. I do my reporting and propagation. Them on Nov. 1st. I do this yearly. I learned from Martha Stewart that trimming your trees on November first was when to do it. M my trees and buses in my yard. Getting ready for winter and the upcoming spring 2921. I never have serious issues. Things that I’ve learned to understand and developed my routine. Sounds like you do to. It depends on our plant zone. I still do Order plants online from California. Used to live there and could buy all year round. But now that .i don’t live there my-schedule had to become a routine. My saying is “make not want not.....lol. I honestly have trained myself to follow the calendar and do accordingly depending on where I live. I don’t have Issues that I can’t get through them successfully. with not much dying if anything at all dying. Plants succulents and cacti are resilient as are we. This has been my routine for about 20 years. Good luck y’all make your detail Ed plans and journal them, follow them, you’ll be so happy you did. #allplantscansurvivewithpropercare.
Stella Lim I use alcohol 70% or neem oil mix that I place in dollar spray bottle and spray roots and leaves of succulents that may have pests so it kills pests.
Somebody may have already made the comment, but I think one of those Echeveria, the one that is lying closer to the ground, is actually a Graptopetalum bellum, in which case it would probably prefer less than full sun.
How did you get the glued in stones out? I can’t even feel the soil under the stones in this arrangement I got, the plants and the glued stones are very close together.
My poor buddy just died due to really bad drainage. The soil is basically just potting soil. Hard as a rock. I feel so bad, I hope the cuttings I was able to get will grow, but I doubt they will...
nana jack What I meant is I will use either one. I have sprayed all my plants with neem oil before getting them inside this fall. Roots are also safe to spray. However, neem oil seems at times to be better at prevention. Usually when I see a lot of mealy bugs on leaves I use alcohol to remove them. So leaves on these plants I sprayed with alcohol because I saw mealy bugs. I ended up not using neem oil.
Succulent Living by Marija Hi, how do you remove them? Do you spray the plant and kill them then leave them there or do you actually have to take them off of the plant? Thank you.
They dont look all that bad.... I think if you went to a gardencentre here in the Netherlands you wouldnt get them for that little money, you did a good deal!
Thank you for this video, I’m new to taking care of plants I got a succulent and it’s corners are drying out and idk what to do:( I leave it in the sun for a couple of house on all sides and I water it everyday, but still do you have any recommendations
In ikea theres a lot of healthy plant's, but some are neglected. once when I was there i saw the cacti and they where in a plastic box and some of them looked dry, neglected or just dead. I have gotten cactis there, but i dont approve of how they treat them 😡😢
They all turned out very pretty. Do you have any advice for a succulent that lost all of its leaves and has a very tiny leaves growing out of it. I would really love to save my plant.
Brayla’s Universe it happened to be before and plant recovered over time. Water normally and give naught it needs just don’t place it facing south where it get get stressed
Love the video! I've been getting clearance plants for awhile now but have never bothered with the glued-in-stones ones. How do you break it up and get the plant out safely? and clean the pot! Thanks and love your work!
Jess Muskat just run it under water. water makes the glue soften and you can remove stones and clean the pot. It does take little bit more time to get it perfectly clean and it’s recommended to do it under strainer so stones don’t end up in your sink’s disposal 😬
That is crazy. I never knew they put glue in there. Now I know what was I dealing with few days ago with this beautiful pot I got for a $1 with a dead plant in it. It was so confusing to me the way it looked and felt when I was trying to pull it out and clean it.
Got Plants? Thank you for subscribing! I use neem oil (it’s about 1teaspoon on small spraying bottle full of water that I bought in ikea, neem oil I bought on amazon) or alcohol as long it is not 90%or more you don’t have to mix it with water. Some plants I sprayed with one some with the other. When I see mealy bugs I usually use alcohol. Both are safe for top of the plant as well as roots and soil.
Kimberly McKevitt I would recommend amazon.com for buying neem oil because it was cheaper than stores. It lasts forever because you have to dilute it with water. 😊
I got that first one that you worked on. After awhile it went into an umbrella shape???? Why?? It had water and light. Maybe not enough. Bug I could never save it. Do you know what causes them to like turn down into an umbrella shape?
Umbrella shape is a sign of lack of light and it can happen even when you place plants in a window facing south. Here in Michigan we have days without sun during most winter and before when I didn’t have led lights I used to have that issue. I left one Echeveria on natural like and I have umbrella too 😊 but it’s salvageable and I’ll probably have video sun wheee I may behead it. Led lights help a lot!
Hi Marija! I’m new to succulents and plants in general. I think my plant is a crested ghost from a wedding giveaway a year or two back. It was overwatered a few months ago and transferred to a different pot and soil twice with the hopes of making them better but they never really looked as good as when I got them. Not quite sure what to do with them now. The leaves have a yellowish hue to them and look like raisins now. I hope it’s not too late for me to care for them correctly.
Kaklong Kaklong that’s a really good question! It all depends what succulent died from. If it’s fungus or mite (like aloe mite) or root mealy bugs I would throw the soil right away. But if it’s other issues I usually reuse it. For example if succulent dried up from lack of water or sometimes even from overwatering I reuse it. You can spray the soil with neem oil or you can sterilize soil in the oven or microwave or hot sun.
Hi goodmorning!! I'm from South Carolina a begginer in handling succulents, I'm just wondrin if can I have succulents inside the home but near the window? I know they love sunlight but just wondrin if, are they going to be healthy and won't die.? Can u give me some tips on how to take care of them indoor
Lyndale Artates yes, of course! Just make sure window is not facing north preferably east or south. I water indoor succulents once a week all through the year with some exceptions if varieties that need little less water.,good luck! 😊
Can u add me on messenger if you don't mind ao I can show u a picture of my window, I'm not really sure if my window facing north east or South😄🙃... I'm just totally getting in hook in collecting succulents and I don't want them to die😔 please🙏🏾 and thank you
I get sick and tired of the plants at Lowes. They are either WAY overwatered and rot after I get them home or WAY underwatered and bringing them back is almost impossible! I have to admit that when a plant at the store is almost dead anyway I pinch off a healthy leaf is it's there and it just "falls" into one of the plants I'm buying "by mistake". LOL. Can't stand to leave them there to die..HEHE.
Also.. I bought a small garden box on sale and it has evergreen plant..string plant..clover plant AND a Hen and Chicks.. In the same pot.!! I'll be dividing them ASAP!
Succulent Living by Marija Johnson thank you. My plants are fine. My Buddha's temple got Fungus and that one is not ok. But you know sometimes we loose one. We have so many. Even people dye. Nothing to do. I am happy to be back. . Have fun whit your new plants. Wow you got so many at once, congrats. The Lithops of the other video are pretty . Happy for you. Hugs
Nilza Pereira De Melo too bad for Buddha temple! I still don’t have one. I am noticing that Crassula spring time, Crassula moonglow and maybe Buddha temple too (because they are similar) are more prone to fungus. I went to really old nursery and they had same issues on those plants. Might talk about that in one of the next videos.
Succulent Living by Marija Johnson Please do talk more about it. I was thinking that they can be more sensitive.. I also think Cotyledon is weak to have indoor. Not all plants do good inside and under artificial lights. Specialy in winter. Some are ok whit that but not all l see. I m looking forward to see your video.xxxxx
Succulent Living by Marija cool! Thanks! Another and I’ll stop bugging you lol like a pest! Can I use the alcohol prep pads instead of the spray? I notice I o lot have the pads
Flerida Lara 😄😄 I think it’s easier to work with spray. I bought spray bottle from ikea for a dollar and 70%alcohol is few dollars at any grocery store. Pests are in small places where it’s hard to reach with pads without damaging leaves
I'm new to your channel, hoping you can help there is little flies that are so hard to get rid of around my aloe any way to repel them?, hope you can help also what do you spray on them?
Edgar rock welcome to my channel! 😊 those flies are not harmful to your plants but are annoying and are indicator of soil that’s staying too moist. I would just leave everything to dry longer. Those flies live close to the surface of soil and will die off when you don’t water. Do you have fan running?
what do you mean? The plants are often cleared at stores like Lowes, Walmart and Home Depot. 70% Alcohol you can buy in any grocery store. Neem oil you can order on amazon or buy in some stores. I would recommend organic one.
catherine saulnier I recommend buying organic neem oil (I paid 16 dollars for a small container but that will last because you mix small amounts). There are directions it’s about 1 tablespoon on 1liter of water and teaspoon of dish soap. It works as insecticide and fungicide helping fight pests and prevent fungus on succulents. Great stuff!
@@succulentlivingbymarija8872 Can you pls show how to use them? do you completely remove the soil from roots and then use it ? or you spray the leaves with the oil?
