In this video I give my Fluval FX6 canister filter a clean after 6-months on my Lake Malawi aquarium! Each time I show this process people really seem to enjoy it, so I figured I would give you a more updated video. However, this time I will also be adding some Seachem Purigen into my filter to help get the water nice and clear. I will show you the before and after of the Purigen.
Timestamps:
1:41- Emptying the Fluval FX6
3:46 - Beginning the cleaning process
5:10 - Different types of filtration (mechanical, biological, chemical)
6:36 - How the Fluval FX6 Filter works
7:14 - How I drain my aquarium water using a pump
9:37 - Washing canister filter media with tank water
11:18 - How to order Fluval FX6 Baskets
12:46 - How to add Seachem Purigen to a canister filter
14:10 - How to place Fluval FX6 Baskets back in
14:40 - Re-filling a canister filter
16:33 - Reattaching the Fluval FX6 to the tank
17:29 - Refilling my aquarium with tap water
20:37 - How to turn the Fluval FX6 filter back on
22:09 - Results from adding Seachem Purigen into my tank
22:48 - Water clarity 1-week after a water change
I hope you enjoy the video! If you do, remember to give it a like!!

you are a Rockstar!😊, so glad to see a young person doing major water changes and just the overall upkeep of such large tanks, plus you are well spoken and knowledgeable, obviously you have done your research and educated yourself on the tanks, filters and fish! good job!

Purigen really does work. The effect is visible. I used to recharge it, and you can save money doing that. But it's a pain. So I just buy new pre-made bags for my tanks every three months and consider it a cost of the hobby.

Instead of using the hose to drain the filter you can shut the intake valve and while the pump is still on slightly open the drain valve and you’ll get some gurgling noise. Let that happen for maybe 10 seconds then shut the drain valve and then the out valve and then unplug. Your water in the filter will be lower. Then when you are putting the filter back together you can leave it empty put lid on and secure and put on in and out hose open the in and then the out and it will fill your filter by itself. As long as you don’t drain the hoses. 😊love watching your videos. I have 3 cichlid tanks one with Frontosa

you can use the inbuilt pipe outlet on the bottom of the filter for water water changes. just connect a hose to it and put the other end outside or in your sinc, then turn off the outlet pipe but leave the inlet pipe on and keep the filter going.this will use the filters pipe to drain the tank. then to fill it back up connect the hose to the outlet on the bottom of the filter and put the other end in whatever you get your water from, eg if you mix it in a bucket put the end of the pipe in the bucket and turn the out flow pipe on the in flow pipe off and turn on the filter and it will pump the water from the bucket into the tank. it is basically a built in water changer.

Kaity I appreciate your teaching and clarity. I found you last year, installed an FX6 on a 300 gallon stock tank which I use for my quarantine tank for my 3000 gallon koi pond. I have 3 very large goldfish in the tank and the filter does a great job. I am using the Fluval ammonia remover and the Fluval clearmax. But I try to clean out the filter and change those bags about every 4-6 weeks.

Hi Kaity, Your Tanganyika tank and your Malawi tank look amazing, anyway. The Purigen. always does such a good job clarifying the water, Since I saw you using it and the UV clarifier, I decided to do the same in my Malawi tank and got such good results. I have to remark that your content is really useful and entertaining in the same manner. Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🐠and experiences with us. Greetings from Peru✌🙌!!!

I own several FX 6’s and a couple FX 4’s. Their electronic self priming is a plus. I clean my pads monthly as waste still in water column but hidden in canister. I had one motor fail on a FX 6 after 5 years continuous service. Fluval offers a replacement motor for $60. Works like a champ. I have used many filters including eheim’s. Eheims are great but sometimes finicky with leaking if not clamped right. Love your tank as looks similar colorful saltwater tank. Plus your tank lighting helps with whiter LED’s vs yellowish led freshwater

Try rinsing out the uvc before filling up the tank, you'll be surprised at how dirty they get. It will help with keeping the water clear when filling back up. I rinse mine out every second water change.

Hi kaity , if you fill your second and third trays with biological media and your sponges course medium and fine on 1st tray that will keep the water sparkling clean and less maintenance. You definitely need to improve your biological filtration which in turn will do most of the cleaning for you. I have a 210 gallon 6ft tank with predator haps and peacocks. I don’t open my fx6 filter up until the 9-12 month range. My filter pads and trays have a quarter of build up you have . PH 8.0-8.2 nitrates 10-40ppm and weekly water changes of 15-35 % only. No need to waste my on purigen or water clearer products. I’m in Melbourne Vic, love video’s

A tip for the siphon, put the whole hose in the tank so it fills up, then just cover the end with your thumb so none comes out until you are in position to let it rip

That thick brown 'gunk' nasty stuff in the sponges is some of the BEST stuff to water any houseplants and garden plants. It's worth filling the canister half way up and scrubbing the sponges together until they are pretty clean. Take that nasty soup water and target feed the plants. If you're in to that sort of thing. Good stuff.

Your tanks are great but, just a couple of comments (if I May) on your FX maintenance (I also have a FX filter). Firstly, the blue sponge is great but it gets clodged very quick and that increases nitrates. Also, I noticed the water flow is reduced because of that. So, I stopped using it and just left the standard sponge (the black one) and my water is as crystal as if it had the blue one in the basket. Secondly, I used to do quite the same as you when doing the maintenance of the filter but found that, I could fill in the filter more easily without having to drink a bit of the tank water ha ha. Once the in/out valves are back on and right before changing the water, open both valves and the gravity will make water flow back in the filter. After a sew seconds, the filter will be ready to go and you can proceed to change as usual. By the way, why do you change so much water of your tank? More than 50% I can imagine. Im curious. Cheers from Mexico!

I've never used any type of chemical to clear up my water, and my water is very clear. Usually, after I clean the glass, the water is very murky but give it about an hr or so and its super clear, im loving my top fin power pro 110 filter.

I have a weird love/hate relationship with cannister filters. They're more efficient than HOB filters by a longshot, but I'm somewhat old school in terms of just opening up the top of an HOB and swapping the filters during my upkeep. Had a cannister filter and it felt like a little more work than I cared to deal with. Oh well! Everyone has their preferences.

Cleaning sponges/ceramic media in tap water being bad is a myth. You also seem to have very limited amount of good quality ceramic media in the filters, in my opinion. Looking at the state of the filter you do overfeed quite a bit, with pellets by the looks of it. Cichlids that consume lots of pellets turns into muck spreaders, especially carnivore pellets. I would also recommend stop using Seachem Prime/Seachem Purigen as it hinders/worsen the beficial bacteria.

Cleaning everything with tank water is the safest and most popular way of teaching and doing it but the more someone progresses in their knowledge, there have been studies to show that you will not kill off all your beneficial bacteria if you run tap water for a few min. But the studies show it would probably take closer to 45 min to an hr of rinsing to kill it all off. But as long as the person knows this then they should be fine. It's new people in the hobby that don't know what they are doing and don't know anything about beneficial bacteria and don't know how tap water ran long enough could actually create a problem, this is the issue for those that don't know that should probably follow the tank water method first.

Python systems are amazing to use for doing your tanks but they can be expensive I made my own with the proper parts for under $25 and you can make it with any size hose lengthwise that you need I made it years ago and I am still using it to this day on my tanks

Same! Cheap pump, 19mm hose pipe and a filter inlet. You then just need a bucket if you don't want to fill directly from the sink. Been doing it this way for years.

Maybe this is not something new… If you’re external canister filters uses o-rings, include lubricating them as a routine task. O-rings are made in a variety of different materials and the cheapest ones tends to get hard…these are usually the ones you’ll find in your filter taps etc. A little bit food grade mineral oil works well for me. Food grade silicone spray should also do the trick.😊
