With the filter still powered, close the inlet valve for 5 to 10 seconds, then close the outlet and power off unit. This will lower the level of water in Canister, water will not leak out when valves are taken off. It only lowers it past the lid but much cleaner with no leaks when energy is applied.

Big thank you to you KaveMan- I inherited a 250gal tank w/FX6 a few months ago, it is my FIRST tank ever (I don't recommend this!) and it is such a beast to care for and clean (especially for someone who is 5'1"); the first time I cleaned the FX6, I watched some other cleaning video which DID NOT INFORM ME that the impeller must be removed and cleaned! So today is the first time in a long while that the impeller got a good scrubbin' (thanks to the impeller cleaning video you posted a few months later).

Nice video. I fill my FX4 back up by connecting the inlet hose and opening the valve. Watch down the outlet tube until you start to see the water. You can throttle the inlet valve to slow the water and shut it off as it nears the top. Connect the outlet and start the pump. You'll have a small amount of air come out the return, but your system is primed quickly.

OK, I'll admit it, until recently, even though I have a 20-plus year old red eared slider, I never was serious about the aquarium hobby. But despite that my turtle Julio is thriving and doing well. I’m running dual fx6’s on my 120 African cichlid tank. When I do my water changes, I drain into a large tote inside the bathtub. Then I ring out all the foams and dunk the baskets in the tank water in the totes. This is the easiest way I’ve been able to do it. I alternate each filter cleaning every other month. Love my fx6’s.
@billyrichterrocks
@billyrichterrocks 7 месяцев назад
Also, I drain the outlet hose before hooking back up and the filter will fill and prime from the tank as long as the outlet isn’t covered while refilling.
@thomasedwards9101
@thomasedwards9101 3 года назад
🤔 the crushed coral can be added to substrate of the aquarium. It will do a better job of buffering because it will be spread out. The bio- media in the top tray can go in the bottom tray and medium porosity filtration foam can go into the top basket as it should when considering the foams sponges that come with the FX6 filter comes with are a coarse porosity. Also a prefilter can be added to the intake to help extend the life of the foams and impeller/ motor. Chemical filtration is unnecessary but if it must be used then a quality carbon is really all that needed. Carbon is a natural product and can be bought in bulk. To keep the tank in balance then add an additional inch of substrate. This will create the zones needed to properly house both types of beneficial bacteria. Good luck with your hobby and your channel.
@TLCole425

This is why I love my Oase Biomaster Thermal so much. Having the removeable sponge pre filter allows me to clean the sponges weekly WITHOUT disturbing the media baskets, The heater out of the tank is an added bonus.

Oase biomaster are good filters. However, if you have a high bioloaded cichlid tank for example, forget it, even an 850T, cannot compete with an FX6. I know i've got one. Like a filter to have a prefilter then conside AquaEl 4500 :)

Kev, When my FX6's were new, I couldn't remove the valves from the canister lids because they were so tight! Did you ever have this problem? Someone recommended using waterproof grease ($4 from Home Depot) I rubbed some on the O rings and on the inside of the valve body and what an amazing difference it made! They go on and off with zero effort now.

Love the video however there's a bit of a misconception with cleaning with tap water. The levels of chlorine that are in tap water is not nearly high enough to kill the beneficial bacteria right away. On average you would need to soak the sponges for close to an hour to do damage. Now this is anecdotal but I've been rinsing my mech filtration in tap water for years with zero cycle crashes. Check out prime time aquatics on this topic, he has an exceptional scientific deep dive regarding this.
@KaveManAquatics
@KaveManAquatics 2 года назад
Ive seen the video, its a great video. But I still dont trust it lol Also since this is a beginner-focused channel I would never advise a beginner to clean with tap water simply because I assume their tanks are still young and immature, and any potential BB loss could affect their tanks.
@andreanikolic8125
@andreanikolic8125 2 года назад
I also use tap water. I rinse the bio media in tank water but the mechanical filters I literally use the steam power washer on it to get the shit out and never have cycle crashes.

Dude, hint on putting the FX6 back together. When removing the filter from under your aquarium you first turn off the In Valve followed by the Out Valve. The same procedure when you replace the reassembled filter as follows: reattach the In Valve and then the Out Valve. Now very important, open the In Valve first and then the Out Valve and immediately plug in the filter. It will chug and gurgle and bubble in your tank for a few minutes until the filter gets all the air out of the system. It will then start filtering. The reason why you open the In Valve first is that will automatically prime your canister filter body with water. You only have to independently prime your filter only when you first buy it. The method I mentioned works as upon opening the In Valve allows water from the tank to fill the canister body, thus priming it. I hope I explained that to where everyone understands it. As I mentioned I run two of these great filters on my 150 gallon. I also have two Fluval E-Series 300 Watt Heaters which are excellent because they have a built in visible LED thermostat and keep the temp +.5 or -.5 from the setting you select. I run both at 83 degrees. I also have an over stock of Tetras/various species, Severums, Assorted African Cats, Silver Dollars, and 3 healthy Panther Crabs. I decorate with rock caves, artificial plants, and Mopani Wood. I went this route after having 85 African Cichlids in my aquarium but soon realized that they excrete a lot of waste. I sold off some of my surviving larger ones let’s just say, the surviving warriors. I really enjoy these videos as they are very knowledge oriented and they are done by someone who has experience and great enthusiasm for the hobby. Anyway, try the In Valve method I mentioned and that will save you from having to prime the canister before reattachment. Make sense? I hope so.

But I’m really liking all your vids brother and thank you for being super thorough on information and detail on how to use canisters and what bio media you use, I really like the Purigen idea ima be adding that to what I use now. I have had my Fx6 going on 5 years. It is a beast. I have 125 gallon Oscar tank with Clown Loaches. I clean it once every 2-3 months. A trick with the white foam: boil it in water to sterilize it and reuse. That stuff is expensive.

I probably could have gone no more than 3 months but today makes it 2 months and wasn't as bad as yours but with current bio-load I have now, not taking any chances. Would recommend to opt for coarse medium and fine pads in the side tray (circular one). You do have the default one i reckon its the medium. Insert coarse and fine too in the circular trays. That way the gunk entering the top would be reduced. Nice clarity of videos. Thanks!!!

That is a great suggestion! I see how that would be beneficial, Thanks!! 👍👍

Kevin...I would put the crushed coral in the tray right after the sponge before the bio. This way the crush coral will act as a sand filter before the bio. And another benefit is that gunk actually is a PH lowering substance that will help dissolve the crushed coral for buffering and minerals. You do not have to replace the crushed coral because it buffers as it disintegrates. Just add a little more when needed.

Thanks for the details. Best vid on the FX cleaning that I've viewed. (I knew it would be) Is there a reason why some folks use NO chemical filtration such as Purigen? Seems odd to me. I await your recommendation for an FX2 or FX4 from a comment I made on a previous video. Thanks as always. You are the BEST.

Glad you enjoyed it! Chemical media like Purigen is always optional, never necessary. It will absolutely improve your waters quality and clarity but some people are happy with what they can achieve without it. I responded to your last FX4 comment. Recommended going with the FX4 cause of your big goldfish and pleco 😁

@@KaveManAquatics Thanks. Saw it and it is on the list of things I'll get in 2025! I visited Strictly Reef in Reno, NV and mentioned that I may have grown out of what the chain stores can provide. They will make a tank that fits me (short enough to reach in, for maintenance, with out a ladder). They will even make the cabinet to match it and put a door on the end for additional convenience in servicidng the Fluval. The salesman at the front counter walked me around the store to show me what they can do. Now that's customer service. I found my new fish store.

On fx6, top tray is for mechanical filtration(sponges only) middle tray is bio media, bottom tray chemical, and a fine polishing pad(fine pad at the bottom keeps fine particles from getting into the impeller). Then you could judge how often to clean by when the bio media gets dirty. All the sponges could be washed and reused several times before replacing is necessary.
@KaveManAquatics
@KaveManAquatics 3 года назад
Disagree, Fine filter pad does not go in the bottom tray. And I have a better way to set up your chemical media - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WlKVa0qzjwg.html

Just a note. I had to get my daughter in law to do a fx 6 filter cleaning while I was on a extended stay in USA. The video was great except it does not show the disconnection of the intake and discharge lines. She did not know to push in the red tabs below the valve and wiggle it free. I would suggest that you add that part to your video.

Great video. However the crushed coral doesn't lose its buffering capacity. Whenever it erodes (microscopic)it buffers the water.
@KaveManAquatics
@KaveManAquatics 4 года назад
Dwight Donaldson crushed coral does dissolve and will eventually lose its buffering power. Especially if it’s in your filter rushing water through it constantly. I’m not sure if you’re just pointing out the terminology I used, but the point is that crushed coral in your filter, for the purpose of buffering your water and raising PH, does eventually need to be replaced.
