Cleaning Ford 8N Tractor Carburetor

The carburetor on my Ford 8N was leaking gas when I shut it off so today I cleaned out the carburetor for better performance and to stop leaking.
Each day I am even happier that I chose this particular tractor out of the lot where I got it. This old Ford tractor has been well serviced and maintained until it sat for a while waiting for a new owner.
When I first got it, two tires were flat, the steering was frozen up and there was bad gas in the tank. Of course, the battery was dead as well.
I got the tractor home the other day but now I need to clean the carb so it runs better.
When I shut off the engine, gas poured out of the carb, meaning the float was stuck or worn.
I was happily surprised to find that all the screws were easy to turn when I removed the carburetor.
Inside I found that the flat was gummed up with old gas. This was an easy fix with some carburetor cleaner and a paper towel. I cleaned the jets and other openings to be sure the tractor would run well since I had the carb open already.
I put it all back together and the tractor started right up without the need for starting fluid. It runs better now without stalling. And now it does not leak gas when I shut off the engine.

Troy, evidently there is something that is causing the governor to be stuck, try manually moving it toward the front of engine when running. It should then make the engine run at a slower RPM. Check where the rod connects to the Carb and also the governor to make sure they are properly connected. they don't get out of adjustment by simply disconnecting them Another point to check is from the throttle lever under the steering wheel all the way to the governor connection to make sure everything is actually working properly

I may need a spring from my reading online.

@@TheDoItYourselfWorld Look on the ground where you took the carb off the tractor, it may have fallen off, but the tractor was running fine before it was taken off is what has me stumped that's why I say to look on the ground for the spring. I know which spring you are referring to but that spring is under a slight preload at full idle and the load is increased when the throttle lever is pulled to the downward swing, full down is full throttle and full up toward the steering wheel is full idle .

Things used to be made to last. Wish more people would rescue old tractors, cars, trucks and restore them because they will last years.

Glad it smoothed out for you. Yes, full fluid change, check points/condenser/plug wires, etc are important when you have limited knowledge of previous history. Something at the top of your list should be to get that Air Cleaner reconnected to the carb and make sure the element and oil level(pretty sure it's a oil bath filter) are in good shape. Dirt and crud will undo a lot of your good work quickly.

I would've used air and blew everything out. Removed the gas line and blew it out and cleaned the tank. All of rust from inside the tank is going to work it's way back into the carb and through the engine if there is no fuel filter. Solid looking tractor and you will probably get years of use out of it if you clean and filter everything properly. Good luck with the tractor.

The gas tank is clean and I previously cleaned out the tank, bowl and gas line. There are multiple filter screens in the tractor to keep dirt and rust out of the carb.

Hmmmmm, did not know of all the screens. Good luck with your new tractor.

If you shut the gas off at the bowl you will not have gas running out of the carburetor run the engine to the Tractor stalls after you shut off the gas

You need to take the carb apart again, you never cleaned the emulsion tube, main jet or the idle jet in your previous attempt. Cheers

You’ll be taking the carburetor off again if you run on reserve and the filter in the tank is bad. Another thing is that I’ve never seen 5 turns out on your adjustment.?? Max shouldn’t go farther than 2-3. And your float looks like it’s out of adjustment too. It should measure 1/4” from the base to the bottom of the float. Mind you that your top half is upside down when measured. In other words, when your float is closed. Remember to only turn your gas valve open 2 turns. That’s all it takes. You don’t need it open and farther. Good luck.

Troy check out BILLSTMAXX n RU-vid. He has the same tractor. He is in the process of restoring it. You might want to watch his videos on his working on it. You can probably contact him and he can probably help you you out with a lot of things.

In worst case if you left the gas on it will run out on the ground, the position of the carb is underneath the manifold which is also below the intake on the head itself there is no way the fuel will make its way into the engine to fill up crankcase, it will Just fill up carb and run out on the ground

The handbook for this tractor states that if the air intake tube is on the carb, it can fill up the engine. I do plan to put on that tube on my tractor.

I think you found a ford tractor that is in really good shape. Its a keeper. Also It may have a vacuum leak. That is what was wrong with my dads tractor I was working on. It leaked on the manifold.
