Cleaning Queen Excluders Ready For The Beekeeping Season.
In this video I show you how we clean Queen excluders at our honey farm. Queen excluders are an important part of the beehive. It stops the queen the bee from laying eggs in the honey supers and spoiling your honey crop!
After a season the queen excluders gets full of beeswax and propolis and stops it working as effective as it should be. Leaving a lot of beeswax on old queen excluders can be a disease risk too. So its always good practise to clean them down before every season.
In this video we use a hot pressure washer or steam washer. It does a fantastic job and makes light work of this sticky job!

Gruff if it wasn't for your channel I'd have never known you or your company so although I'm sure it takes a hell of a lot of time and effort I'd just like to thank you for keeping going with youtube and now setting on someone to train up. If I lived closer I'd buy everything from you just to help your business. ( i don't think you can post Thorns equipment). Both you and Lozza lol on the other channel have got me back into bee keeping and I'm so excited for my new 1st year after a 4 year gap. I'm only starting with 1 abandoned small hive but building it upto 10 this year so I'm building stuff like crazy. Anyway I'm waffling on but again keep going, and start selling queens lol.

Or if you're on a smaller scale, use a steam cleaner.

For a metal excluder you can use a special brush (can be found online) and for or plastic ones I have a special plastic scraper but this is only for a small scale. The other option would be to soak jn the warm solution with bleach and a good amount of soda crystals to dissolve propolis and some wax. You can also try domestic water pressure. My Kartcher works absolutely fine on the plastic frames.

So you spend about 2 pound in water and energy to clean a queen excluder which new cost about 4 pounds in the market. And in addition you would have wax all over the place. You will step on it and bring it home . I do not think that his is the right solution for this task.

Are you using holy water from Jerusalem? Water doesn’t cost anywhere near that.

So you suggest throwing the queen excluder in the bin instead of reusing!? Literally hundreds of them every year!?
@lymitutit3046

@@gwenyngruffydd No ! I thought to find a better way , more economical and more clean method. I see that your Q.excluders are in metal , right ? What about filling a metallic barrel . Piling the Q.excluders in it , filling with water , adding a bit of caustic soda and worm it up to 75 degrees and all will be clean and disinfected.

Just a thought Gruff - If you did this in a bunded tray of sorts you could recoup some (if not all) of cost by selling the Propolis collected?
@gwenyngruffydd
@gwenyngruffydd 5 месяцев назад
It’s a good idea! But I think the pressure would still throw it out

@@gwenyngruffydd Trust me on this - use a patio cleaning attachment. Online price for Propolis is around £35 for 100g !!
