Cleaning Rototiller Carburetor So It Runs Better

Since my Sears Craftsman rototiller handle bars broke off and the carburetor needed cleaning anyway I decided to just tackle the job right away and get it done all at once.
I recorded the whole process on video in case anyone is ever interested in learning how simple it is to clean a small engine carburetor.
This was a very basic carburetor so it was not at all complicated to work on.
When I got it opened up I discovered that it really did need a cleaning badly. The fuel bowl was loaded with filth and the whole inside of the carburetor was full of aluminum oxide corrosion.
The nut on the bottom of the fuel bowl was also full of sludge and it is no wonder that the engine would not run well. It had to be almost fully choked in order to run at all.
I got out my generator and air compressor so I could blow out the passages and chambers of the carburetor. I am living off the grid so I have to run a generator to power my air compressor.
After spraying everything up with carb cleaner I used the high pressure air and blew out all the passages in the carburetor to clean them out well.
It was a simple job and I recorded the whole thing live so you can see that it did not take long at all.
I put the carburetor back on the rototiller engine and got everything back together again.
The rototiller fired right up on the second pull which is good considering that the carburetor was bone dry after cleaning it.
Follow my daily progress on the path to self sufficiency on my off grid solar homestead.

I used pressurized air that you clean your computers with and it worked! I never thought of using air to clean the lines. THANK YOU!!!! My tiller worked today. Now all i need to do is figure out why the sediment bowl keeps flooding. I think the pin on the floater isn't making a good enough connection, or the rubber gasket it pushes up against is worn out. Thumbs up for the video.

Well done on the carb cleaning procedures. Equipment like tillers and snow blowers need one more step. At the last use, try to only put in the fuel you are going to use. Even if that is a few ounces to finish up a job. When complete, let it idle the rest of the fuel out of the system. Then you can put it away for it's long storage. I did this last weekend with my snow blower. It starts and runs fine every first snow that way.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 10 лет назад
Right, very important point especially these days with the bad gas they are selling us.
@RadicalRC
@RadicalRC 10 лет назад
My only complaint about the fuel is the government using force to collect tax dollars from us. They take those dollars and give them to business men (farmers) to cause them to produce a product (alcohol) that the market will not support otherwise. Corn is higher, refined chemicals get higher because refineries are processing corn into alcohol rather than other things the market would demand. Then you have the environmental wacko's who have caused legislation to be put in place requiring the summer alcohol blend. You see, it's not "they" it's really identifiable sources. It's not business that forces it, but forces acting against voluntary exchange. Forces that wish to manipulate what a company can sell and what you can buy. There are many proper uses for alcohol as a fuel. It is immoral that we allow these idiots to decide for us how we will use it. It's all because of socialists meddling in the free market which they abhor. They use force, we have fewer choices. It's philosophy.

wes normandin Very, very hard to find in NY. Frustrating. Yes I need to get that bar. But I do not think its why the handle bars broke. I was being very careful with the tiller and letting it do the work itself. It was a cheap and poorly made weld.

Someone I know just gave me a tiller that doesn't run. He got it off of someone and the carb was totally disconnected. It appears to have good compression, however to get it running I have to put the carb/fuel tank back together, change the fluids and reconnect some cables. Also have to put a new end on the spark plug wire. If I get it running, I will have a pretty beefy tiller for free. Same guy gave me a much needed lawn mower as well. It has seen better days but it works.

Hey Troy, if you take the line coming from the valve cover, and unplug it from the carb, it will run for a lot longer. That is causing it to suck in all the oily vaports from the crank case, plug the hole on the intake side, and run the tube off to the side, I usually take a small piece of cheese cloth or a rag, and put over the end of the hose and zip-tie the cloth on. Just my opinion.

Hey Troy tiller sounding good. But on your air cleaner you did not latch the bottom before tightening the fastener bolt. You have 3 plastic tabs that slid into 3 slots on the tin back plate that you forgot to slip into place that will allow the air breather not to seal allowing dirt in and allow the plastic to vibrate and eventually make the bolt vibrate loose or stress crack the plastic.

Next time you do this be sure to pull the main jet(easy just use a small flathead) twist it out as sometimes there is side passages you need to clean, the wire and carb cleaner might bot get it, also you should pull the float off as the needle valve seat is usually gummy(I use a qtip to clean that) it will save you from having to tear the carb back apart when it starts overflowing fuel or not getting fuel at all, makes it easier to test if the float is taking on fuel too
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 10 лет назад
This thing is a cheap carb and has no screw for the main jet. Also, not sure if you saw but the float pin is rusted into place and I could not get it to move. Decided not to mess with it since it was not flooding anyway.

ahh damn chinese junk, the float pin will come out Ive recently seen and fixed much worse, like you said with the extra air spraying you only wanna do it once, I know this and I still do it from time to time lol obviously this time you didnt need it but it is a good thing to try to do in the future, I've cleaned and re-cleaned more carbs than you can imagine, I love small engines and repairs, been my hobby for a lil over 20 years

Another option - Buy new carburetor on eBay for $9. Sometimes worth the hassle not to have to get everything cleaned up if it has some age to it.
@lezbriddon
@lezbriddon 10 лет назад
threadlock compound is really cheap, about $5 a tube. manufactures dont use anything that costs unless theres a reason, the reason being all the engine vibration undoes bolts and screws and causes breakdowns, also it works to an extent as an anti seize by sitting between the metal surfaces and preventing a lot of fastener to body corrosion which makes the bolts weld themselves together to be a pita later. anti-seize grease/compound is also worth the expense on outside nuts/bolts on like your panels and wind experiments. take care. if anyone is bored i just uploaded a video of changing a cv boot on a fwd van

Carb cleaner will eat rubber O-rings. You left the bowl O-ring in place when you sprayed it with carb cleaner. It is also worth the time to remove the jets and clean out those passages since you had it apart anyway.
@gorak9000
@gorak9000 3 года назад
Passages on this carb can be problematic. Just picked up a tiller with a similar engine. The idle passage was completely blocked. Carb cleaner wouldn't even touch it. I had to warm the whole carb up with a heat gun, and use a dispensing syringe filled with carb cleaner and a really fine tip to get the pressure into the one little tube above the main jet only, connected to the air compressor at full chooch to get the idle passage to flow. Carb cleaner and 100 PSI air alone wasn't enough - the heat was critical. Carb kit with new gaskets should arrive tomorrow - original gaskets completely destroyed, probably by previous owner using carb cleaner on them. Bowl seal bad and cracked, needle seat completely swollen.

@@gorak9000 I've had idle jets that never could be opened. Sometimes, ya just cut your losses and replace them.
@gorak9000
@gorak9000 3 года назад
@@RVBob I was thinking I was going to have to replace it as I couldn't get it open, and I don't (currently) have an ultrasonic cleaner, so I didn't have much to lose trying various things. The key is to identify the orifice that's blocked, and use a small enough needle on the air compressor to be able to seal to only that hole. I tried air and carb cleaner, nothing. Then I thought what else does the ultrasonic provide? Heat. Heat gun, warmed up the whole carb, again put some carb cleaner in the syringe, sealed tightly to the problematic passage, couple blips on the blow gun, and everything loosened up and it all blew out the other side. Why replace the carb (with an aftermarket one that might not work as well as the original) when for basically $0 more and 10 extra minutes of effort than I had already tried, I got it open anyway. Now any time I run into a really stuck carb, I have a new trick up my sleeve, and I don't have to wait for parts!

Farmers no longer plow fields because it mixes the topsoil with the clay underneath. Then their field becomes less fertile. Plants are very strong and will grow fine without it. Just poke a hole in the ground with a sharp object and put in a seed or seedling. You don't want to use tillers either. They screw up your garden's fertility too. To loosen the soil water it heavily. But stop before puddles form. Then start planting.

I'm really surprised that you didn't remove the float and clean the float needle and seat. Also, you didn't remove the needle valve. That's really fundamental to cleaning a carb. You should take it apart . Not only does that make it easier to access the things that need cleaning but you can't even really inspect or clean them properly if you don't take them apart. And it's such a fast and easy step that I can't imagine why you didn't bother to do it. How can you even inspect the condition of the float needle and seat and the condition of the needle valve if you don't take them apart? What makes it so hard to understand why you didn't do those basic things is that they are so fast and easy to do. You skipped the most simple but critical steps.
@TheDoItYourselfWorld
@TheDoItYourselfWorld 8 лет назад
I do a lot of testing off video. I generally test the needle and seat by putting the fuel line on and testing to see if it shuts off the flow of fuel or not. With older carbs, if it aint broke, dont fix it applies often. They are fragile and parts are often not possible to find. Often too, the pin that holds the float in place cannot even be removed without damaging something. I also use an air compressor to get the small passages clean quite often. Hey, it runs well. They all run well when I am done.

Do you have a video on stabilizing the depth stake. Mine won’t stay down in the ground and I have both the hairpin clip and Clovis pins in??

Can you show us how to clean the blower housing? I just got a 5 year old Craftsman 5.5 Horse Power Tiller with about 5 total hours on it. Ruluuuuum ruuuuum ruuuuuum with little tiny pauses sort of up and down up and down constant but there is no actual hesitation. I changed the plug - store only had a NGK and changed out the oil - it was also about 4 ounces lower than the 20 oz required and the oil was black. I will not try to tackle cleaning the Carb being I'm new to all this - thanks for the video. Does yours have the 8horse engine ? Thanks. Can you do a vid on the proper way to use this tiller?

Idle circuit is hunting. Easy fix. Just have to clean the idle fuel jet.

what y mostly do is keeping the carb upright, than remove the bowl, and catching up the gas and dirt inside to see whats in there, than clean it out.. yours is quite dity, alwais trouble with this new gas , it attracts moisture! running good now Troy!

Good vid. I used it to do mine was slightly different sizes on the carb bolts than most on mine. I didn't have air compressor do I just used what I had, some canned air aka duster. And used a straight pin on the small holes along with an old tooth brush to clean the bowl out. Bingo bango! Runs like new!

They are very simple to work on actually. I use a long piece of wire to run through the carb these days. In most cases I dont have access to power when I am working on these so the air is an option although it sure helps a lot.

Hi Everyone. Does any know what's the part number for the carb. kits for this rototiller he's working on? I have one just like that but the white plastic part (whatever it's call) where the gas line clamps on and it's attached to the carb. assembly is cracked and leaking gas. I wonder if they sold that part separately or comes in a complete kits. Anyone knows, please response. I will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There should be a model or serial number on the engine. Stamped in somewhere. Go to ebay and buy a brand new carb for about $20.

I put JBweld on and still doesn't stop the leak. I think I will have to order the carburetor kits and replace the float and gasket, I don't think gas is leaking from that line and the valve. I think it's from somewhere in the carburetor like the bowl gasket or the seat doesn't seat properly. that will be my project for tonight to find out.

I bought the same tiller used only once but sat with gas in it for a few years. I gave $30 for it. Ran great after I cleaned the carb but the next time I used it, the seat for the needle was swollen and would not allow the float bowl to fill fast enough! Had the same thing happen to a lawnmower about ten years ago!

Why did you not take the float and needle out when you were cleaning everything else?
@maryzimmerman910

When you put the housing back on, it would be a good idea to first tilt the top of it away a bit and insert the 3 tabs at the bottom into their slots before tipping it up into place and fastening it on -- that way the housing is on tight and right. Otherwise, this is a very helpful video, thanks!
