There’s definitely something really calming about cleaning the items found, and all rolls into this great hobby. Out in the fields, gathering, cleaning and researching, and then the editing. Not enough hours in the day really , but just shows how much love have for it all . Could easily be a full time love. Great outcome on the coin, not too clean leaving the recessed coloured to bring out the detail. Just the way I like them 👌🏻
That turned out great. And like you said, it's your coin and you can do as you like with it. Just like the ones who scream not to rub the coin. Unless you want to sell them, it should not be a problem.
Excellent job Alexander, your patience for detailed work shows my friend. Glad I found your second channel. I enjoy the hands on demos. Stay well mate. Al, NJ, USA
Thank you for making this video Alex. Great to see how you enjoy cleaning your coins. Keep up the good work, it’s always a great day when I get RU-vid up and running and you have a new video out :)
Thank you Richard thats very kind of you! Cleaning coins really is quite a peronal thing isnt it - we alll do it differently and its nice to give the finds a bit of attention! hope all well!
Great episode for debating!.I think you summed it up well....my coin up to me how I want it👍 and rightly so, I think it looks great. I'm a lemon juice to lift crud off and then 2.baby wipes per hammy!
Ha! Two baby wipes?! Vey exact! Each coin needs what it needs... from a bit of soap and water ( silver only) to hard electrocution! Hope all well Bert, thanks for watching!
I liked it when you said "my coin and I can do what I like with it".....it is exactly the phrase I always say to myself Alexander. If you have found it, and don't plan on selling it (which I never do) then you can bring them to whatever standard you so desire. I do like the look of the Pre-Lim so may invest in some of that....an interesting video as always. Great to see you on the Detecting Show last week too my friend. All the best
Thanks Marcus - i was a bit nervous about doing it but was really good fun and they were very gentle with me!!!! Thanks for your comment too - much much aopreciated! Hope all well
I'm with you young man 😁👍 You found it, you own it. My coins will stay with me for the rest of my life - I never sell (unless of course I find something of high value) so I have every right to enjoy them my way, same goes for artefacts. Just realised my comment of "the rest of my life" has a much shorter expiry date than I care to think 😁😁. Bugger. Hope all otherwise we'll, keep cleaning 😁👍
Great video again since we’re talking controversy I clean mine if there quite black with foil and spit no rubbing just let it sit tightly squeezed in foil and spit for a minute or two and wipe off
I was wincing watching that but the end result wasn’t too over cleaned, so my fears weren’t justified. I like a soak in distilled water and then a gentle rub with a pencil eraser - it works beautifully on most silver coins. Not averse to a zap of electricity if very encrusted, so can’t criticise anyone else. Must admit I find I’m less inclined to clean coins now though, as long as they are recognisable. Very interested in copper coin cleaning though. I’m much less precious about them and would love to know how to make them look better!
It was always going to be a bit controversila this method - I by NO means use it on all hammered coins but this one was ideal for a gentle pasting! And i dont clean them as much as I used to but dont support this "Dont touch coins" what rubbish! They would all have started out pristine what is the problem with giving them a gentle clean? I am an antiques dealer - what if we were told not to restore or re-polish, or wax, antique furniture??!! Hope all well Rant Over!
I think that turned out quite well, these coins have been rolling about for centuries in the soil and sometimes they need a little sprucing up, I might have to get some of that paste it looks very handy.
Amazed, you can actually see the depth improve in the before and after shots, that certainly removed a lot of crud!! I tend not to mess too much with my coins, but thats mainly because i am lazy I did clean a couple of really bad hammered silvers, and they turned out mega shiny....as you say thats how they would look when minted, but they arent so appealing when looked at as a detecting find Great series of videos incoming i feel Cheers
Not bad was it and i certainly wouldn't and don't use it on all hammered by any means - but if i think it needs it like this one did then I will and I wont feel guilty about nighver!!! 😂 Hope all well Bruce - thank you as always for watching - i wont put it on the hub as I think they will go nuts!!!!
Thanks Bob - cleaning coins is always going to upset some people this method in particular probably more thank others! But I like it as long as you don't push it! Hope all well and thanks as always for watching!
Great content in your videos, and enjoy them a lot, I am quite new to this fantastic hobby and it's fantastic to see different methods, keep the great content coming 👏👏👏
Any hammy I find gets the spit and foil treatment but I never over clean it like to still have dark tones on the coin..Never wash Roman coins only dry clean them..
I take every coin in its context as it were and treat them as i feel each one needs - the spit and foil is very good and i use it on most coins initially ... thanks for watching and hope all well!
Very interesting yes show more. In the weekend Schottie found a wonderfull Silver Crown from 1819. Please tell if You Will something about coin prizes In UK. I would be happy, if you could Levels that lampshade to be straight. ( Old Work related problem sorry) All the best🔝🍻
i had to have the lampshade at an angle as it was giving too much light!!! I am an antiques dealer and interior decorator i coudln't do that by mistake! Hope all well Toni thank you for watching!
@@HolzhammerLite I suggest new Led lightbulps. With those energy Prices anyway. IT looks very tasty with The interior calm down. In the good old Days. Just a 100watt in each room an that Was it.🍻❤️
I thought that was fair enough, as long as the abrasive is removing tarnish and not the silver or smoothing off edges, and it did look rather nice in the end. I've seen videos where spit and foil gets them so shiny they have to be dipped in bleach to make them look old again and wonder what's the point? I sometimes use a washing up sponge with a little water to get a sheen and highlights but it must be the white non-abrasive ones for non-stick pans, not the green ones that scratch terribly.
Each coin needs to be dealt with as to what it needs ( not even I understood that but hope you know what I mean!) Its not a "one method works for all" as you know - some just need a little soap and water some need electrocuting!!!! Just go carefully! Hope all well Stefan thanks for watching!
Put a nice blob of bluetac on the bench or on a old bit of board and stick the coin on that ,this will give you a free hand and hold the coin for you ,then bite the end of the toothpick this will give you a bush like end to get right in to all the nooks and crannies, I've used watered-down cif before and that works well when you lightly rub the coin between your fingertips using the cif ,if you want to give them a black blue pateena look, get 5 parts water 1 part bleech and dip the coin in for 5 seconds and dry off with paper towel, 👍👍
I find the best way to clean and make hammered coins very nice and presentable is to spit on it press it in tin foil until it heats up, wash it off then use a silver cloth to put a shine on it. It keeps the tarnish look in places where its supposed to be and don't strip them of their character
Many thanks for a most interesting and informative video. What about cleaning a crusty old George the Third copper penny? One you cannot see any detail on. I have a few and tried in vain to clean them using various methods. Just an idea. Take care.
Crikey Robert some crusty old Georgians are way past any treatment i used to try very hard on them now I know its just a waste of time - nothing will bring out detail when the detail is already gone i'm afraid... but i will do a video on those borderline ones soon! Hope all well!
Apparently tap water is not good on coins and the like... i think its the chemicals you are not supposed to wash them! Distilled water recommended but its ok on silver just not copper... hope all well Tucker thanks for watching!
I enjoyed this video very much indeed Alex👍. Controversial, yes. I am of the same opinion as you but it is often one that gets some quite upset. The whole “never clean coins” standpoint of numismatists and their like is another example of a group of people who believe their opinions are so important that they feel the need to chastise those who don’t agree with them. What they fail to realise is that not everyone values their finds in terms of pounds, shillings and pence or that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The best part was when you suggested darkening with bleach🤣. I could almost hear the groans of contempt. I love that little coin and think it looks much better for it.
Thannk you for your thoughts Mick - very well put - I am an antiques dealer I would say 80% of what you see on the market has been restored - re-built, re-polished - re-painted etc I could go on forever!!!!! And a light pasting can do no harm whatsoever... but each coin is different and one has to be careful on the finer ones doesn't one... like you wouldn't slap a load of varnish on a 15thC painted italian table it is common sense! Hope all well and thanks for watching!
@@HolzhammerLite if the paint on the 15th century Italian table was obscured by dirt it would make sense to give it a careful clean to reveal it’s beauty otherwise you’ve just got a dirty table.
I've just found my first Silver.... but been advised not to clean it. To be fair its in very good condition straight out of the ground. It came from under a fallen tree. Henry VIII Testoon. Thanks for the vid. I'm learning and all knowledge is welcome. 👍
Hi Eddy Currents - yes, if it doesn't need cleaning don't clean it they can come out very nice and don't need any attention at all so well done! ... I have never found a testoon so that as your first silver is amazing!
Nooooo don’t clean silver hammered coins like that!! 😂 Generally I don’t clean them at all but I admit it is tempting clean coins that aren’t particularly important. It can be good fun until you ruin a coin😂😂😂.
Thanks Coin Collector... I've ruined plenty over the years!!! They are all mine 😁 not for sale and I like them a bit shiny so ya boo sucks! 😁Hope all well!
