This video is a newly remade version of my old pinch cup cleaning video. In this video, I show how we take the leatherhard cup with footring made in the previous video, and clean it. I show the use of Mudtool shredders, surforms, ribs, and scrapers. I always start with the hardest tool first- the shredders, working in a smooth long pull, often a diagonal pull, to even the form and eliminate divots and flat spots. After the surforms, we move to the metal scrapers, then once the surform marks are gone with the scraper, we move to the yellow ribs, and then eventually the red ribs for a super smooth surface. I show the attachment of the footring once the cup is cleaner. You can attach the footring earlier if you prefer, but I like to clean the cup first. The next video will show the formation of handles and their attachment.
We are using Standard 153 stoneware in our class for this project. The only reason we are using stoneware is because I like the glazes we have in the classroom better for this project.
The previous video in this series shows how students begin with a ball for this project, insert a thumb, and pinch between the thumb and fingers of the same hand. I emphasize to them that they should be doing the pinching while holding it in their hand as opposed to setting it on the table and pinching. The reason to avoid setting it on the table is that the pinch forms tend to flatten on the bottom and go really wide- more wide than they want them. I emphasize that they need to watch the thickness of the walls and the base- and they have to keep them the same thickness… to avoid a thick bottom which could potentially explode! I show how to roll and add a coil by slipping and scoring. Lastly, I show how to create a footring- although I won’t attach it until the following day after I clean the cup a bit.

I made this video for my Ceramics II students at Mason High School. This is the first exercise (non-graded) that the kids do in clay for their Ceramics II class. They are building on skills they developed in level I, with the added complexity of added height, footring, and handle.
I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/s...
I started my RU-vid channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

Hi Karan, thank you for uploading these videos. Your students are so lucky to have a great teacher showing them all this stuff. I took adult evening classes for years and never learned these sorts of step by step instructions. It's been really helpful to my work to have your tutorials - my pinch pots are unrecognisable, they've improved so much! Thanks again for the work you do. x

I absolutely love your videos, and am so thankful that you put them on RU-vid for those who don't have access to ceramics classes. I am curious, though, why you did all the hand scraping rather than doing the trimming from the wheel?

Hi dear Karan, thank you! I have dome doubts: 1. For cup or vase with ring, do you recommend to make make together same day, and to wait one day gor blending them next day? (Covering with plastic?) 2. Or could i make the ring next day when the base is leather hard? Thanks a lot! Marcela

Hello I am very happy to upload your new video. Can I use air-drying dough?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 5 лет назад
Hello! Air drying clay would be fine for a non-functional object, or something which would just be a container for say pens and pencils... but, don't use it for something which you would want to eat or drink out of!! :) .

Karen, what is your table surface? Canvas? Love your videos!
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 5 лет назад
Hi Jacqueline- I use a heavy canvas to cover the table. It is very durable for the students and usually will last me two years before I need to replace... (and that is only due to kids misusing it... picking at it, etc- otherwise it would last much longer. My canvas at home is about 8 years, and still going strong) . I like working on the canvas surface due to clay releasing from it. But, you can also cover a nice sturdy board with canvas if you want for easy transport. I know many potters who prefer a work surface of Hardy board. (the composite stuff used on houses) . They use it straight- no covering. :) I hope that helps!

It is a rasp.
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 5 лет назад
Hi Janice- your are right, those cutters are traditionally called rasps, but I was trying to use the term that the manufacturer uses. Mudtools (who makes the ones I used) calls the small one a shredder, and the long one is a conical shredder! www.mudtools.com/product/conical-shredders/?v=7516fd43adaa
