Today I'm breaking down 5 of the biggest mistakes I've 'made in grooming my kitchen (aka nape hair)- the often more coarse area of hair at the nape of my neck. Hope this is helpful to someone and that you can avoid some of the mistakes I've made.

Wow, I thought I was the only one that needed to clean up their kitchen. I've been doing mine for years, especially when wearing wigs. Thanks for a great video.

I'm an older black woman and I know that area was referred to as the kitchen because the "kitchen" is usually the messiest part of the house or the room that needs the most attention. It could also refer to in homes back then the kitchen was in the back of the house. It was really used during the straightening comb era from the 40' through the 70's when black women were getting their hair pressed on a regular basis. It's really a negative connotation and I don't use that term anymore.

Exactly, it wasnt a term of endearment. 💜

I used to wear wigs to protective style and I would use small clippers to clean up my kitchen. I was really self conscious about high puffs, ponys, or updos but now I embrace it. I'll clean it if I want or leave it if I want. The natural hair movement is really helping combat the baby hairs and kitchen perfection asthetic.

My nape hair is more loose textured than the rest of my kinky 4c hair I usually just let it be. Sometimes when I'm bored I play around with the hair and twisted around my finger. It's the only part of my hair that I can "play around with" 😅

Same lol I shaved it quite a few times because I thought it was heat damage, but it just grows in straight-ish. I never test any products back there 🤣but I’ll test them on my temple or more definitely my crown.

I'm natural and I leave mine as is. If I start grooming it, I'll have to continue the process to maintain the "look". When I had a press & curl my stylist would get her electric shaver and try to "clean up" my kitchen even though my hair was past my shoulders. I stopped her each time.
@sable7114
@sable7114 3 года назад
Yeah that happened to me and it didn't make any sense since I had relaxed long hair. It weren't any little curls back there it's just that my hair came down on the back of my neck. I itched and show irritated for days.

I prefer the V shape of my nape hair and it isn't as tightly coiled as other areas of my head so I don't shave it, but I don't see any problem with shaving it either. To me, it is just a personal choice as to which aesthetic one likes best. Your nape looked fine to me both before and after grooming. I don't know if this is helpful or not but I usually moisturize and brush my nape and then put a headband or scarf on for about 5 to 10 minutes. When I remove the tie my nape is smooth.
@EfficientlyNatural
@EfficientlyNatural 3 года назад
Love this tip! I’ll definitely have to try the headband/scarf. Honestly my nape area can get crazy..it has looked even worse than that but I’m glad you think it looks fine! I also prefer the nape V shape but mine doesn’t do that. 😂

Excellent video! You have such a soothing voice. You did an impeccable job on grooming the back of your hair. I know I would not have been able to do that, it would be a hot mess. The only time I paid attention to the nape (or kitchen) is when I wore my hair short or up when it was longer. Now that I am fully natural again I can see the difference in the texture of that areal of my head and the rest of my hair. My nape hair is type 3 and the rest of my hair is type 4 (in all of its variations). Again thank you for this informative video.

I never heard of the term "kitchen" until I became natural but I know I have hair growing all the way as yours does. But I have always liked my nape. I actually don't prefer the short nape (if that is a good way of describing it...lol). I will take another look at mine to see if they need some grooming or maybe just some brushing to keep them tamed. Great video!!!

My kitchen looks more like yours after you've groomed it so I've never felt the need to shave it. I guess I'm lucky 😊. I just don't mess with it. Though the texture is slightly different than the front hairline, I take care of both front and back pretty much the same way. Your tips and advice are great and very welcome. Thank you. This was a very clear explanation and enlightening for me. I have heard this statement in my classroom and I knew one student was “digging” another but I honestly did not know what the issue/dig was about. I am a causation women but I deal with nape hair that makes me uncomfortable because it is so out of control and have been embarrassed by my nape grooming at various stages in my life too.

I don't have kinkier hair and I don't know if I have a kitchen or not but, I'm quite annoyed with my neck hair and this tutorial helped me and helped me feel better about if its not perfect. Came across this video in my search for answers to help my wildness that grows on the nape of my neck. I've never heard of the kitchen reference but I come from a Mexican background. My hair grows along the two sides of my neck, similar to yours. It was helpful to see how you groom your hair. It's kind of nice to see others go through this as well. I've always felt I'm the only one out there with this mess. I may just have to give in to the idea of having to keep it groomed if I want. I did try waxing once. Ouch! And I've even used my epilator on that area. OOOOOOUUUUUCH! LOL it works though lol thanks for the tips! ❤

@@EfficientlyNatural Oh I have been grey along my front hairline since my mid 20's. My nape and other areas of my head started early 30's. So i have been dying my hair for about 20 yrs. However since I have been natural, almost 6 yrs, for reason i dye as often. Maybe its because one has to be in a clear relaxed state of mind to do theid natural hair. That day would involve dye, shampoo deep condition and style. That is a full day. Now nape grooming.

Excellent perspective. I think if it’s something that doesn’t matter to you at all, then that’s good and you should continue to pay it no mind. If it does matter to you and you desire a certain look for that area, whatever that may be, then perhaps this video might be helpful. I don’t think it should be a matter to generate insecurity as much as it should be a grooming option/perspective/preference. For example some people like a more plucked or manicured appearance of the eyebrows while others prefer a bushier/fuller look. I agree that certain issues, even those centered around grooming techniques, can be made more complicated/convoluted due to our complex racial history in the US... but if it doesn’t apply to you then it doesn’t even need to be explored in that context. Thank you so much for the comment and perspective. ❤️ Curious to know where you are from!

I’m a white woman, and I’ve never heard the hair at the nape of the neck called a kitchen. I think it’s cute. I’ve only ever heard it called a low neck hairline. Mine is very low, and it feels unattractive. I’ve shaved it a couple times, but I don’t like it when it starts to grow back and develops trouble like ingrown hairs. I also hate the way it looks when I decide to let it grow back in. I’ve seen some videos of people waxing the area. Thank you for making this video. My hair couldn’t be more different from yours, but I think the technique you’ve shown here might help me too.

I am an indigenous African. In my family, the concept of a kitchen didn't exist. Hair is hair. Texturism does exist, but not in the same way as in African Americans. I used to hear about kitchens and not understand the fuss. Thank you for sharing. Traditionally, some cultures here shave the edges of hair to avoid balls in the front and back, but it is not weighed down with the same history (though we have some historical issues of our own) my hair is looser at the edges and back, but it is interesting to see this from the perspective of someone whose textures are differently distributed on the head. Blessings 🙌

We used to just get "a shape up" at the beauty parlor or barber shop as part of a regular appointment utilizing clippers. An easy solution to prevent damage from hair coming in contact with clothing or friction breakage is make 1/2 horizontal cornrows/braids at the base of the nap instead of twisting this portion into the back of the hair. Depending on how I end up wearing my hair I can than let the ends hang or pin up depending on how I than wear my hair.
