Top tip. If you live in a hard water area try using distilled water instead of tap water. This eliminates the risk of leaving a tiny film of dissolved inorganic calcium salts on the components found in hard water. Also use the same for rinsing off after cleaning. Distilled water can be expensive so I have a dehumidifier in my workshop to keep the humidity down to a safe level at aroun 45/ 50% . This way I also collect as much distilled water as I need. I also add a few drops of rinse agent, the sort you add to a dishwasher, the cheapest brand will do. This helps prevent water beading and thus aids drying. Oh, and never ever put your fingers in the ultrasonic whilst it's working, it'll cook your fingers no prizes for guessing how I found that one out.

Thanks Michael you are inspirational. Especially your videos about cleaning watches with US cleaner as most of us aspiring amateur watch enthusiast don't have a watch cleaning machine. I certainly am going to try your US methods. Would be lovely to see the whole process with Detergent then grying then the Essance of renata and finally IPA in the US machine. thanks again for your content.

I found your channel because I wanted to learn servicing watches (I thought it's a good place to start), but the more I watch your videos, the harder it seems. There is more to learn than I thought :(
@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches 5 лет назад
It can seem overwhelming but its not. Start slowly with some basic tools and take loads of photos of the movement as you take each part off and that way you have a record of how it call goes back. Its only on when you have done one that you realise its not so difficult. However thats when you want to get better, more tools and then cleaning / timing becomes important to you. its a gradual thing. I have only been doing this for around 2.1/2 years although I have got a bit obsessed.

@MyRetroWatches 5 лет назад
Thanks. My understanding is the Seiko 6309 shock jewels are the same size so I have washed them together. I guess if we have problems in regulating then that will be the cause. I have done this before on a 6 series without a problem.

Interesting and thorough quick course. I would think, considering the cost of the cleaning solution for the watch cleaning machine, that you might want to strain them through a dense flexible cloth or other similar material, therefore keeping the cleaner but tossing the trash. Maybe even a chamois cloth. Just a thought that might save a few (or more) bucks.

I basically use this exact process with the exception of using a different brand sonic cleaner. That's it, and everytime I wash all of the high torque (steel) parts like the canon pinion they come out rusted. I don't know why. I'll pull them out of the alcohol stage and place them in a mason jar with a heat gun to dry, to which they'll come out looking fine but after 3 hours there's always a layer of surface rust over all of them and I have to bust out the scratch brush to remove it. Interestingly, after I remove the rust with a scratch brush and wash it in alcohol (making it look good again) the rust comes back in another 3 hours. I'll also add that no other watch part does this, either on different watches, or on new parts I order, just on the ones I wash using the Naptha+Distilled Rinse+Cleaner+Distilled Rinse+Alcohol+Dry process. It's driving me insane.

@MyRetroWatches
@MyRetroWatches Год назад
Well yes but he has a proper powerful one whereas I have a cheap hobbyist version. Equally it does not stack up for me personally the ultrasonic argument that it damages parts is not completely sound in my opinion. They show a tin foil trick where it disintegrates. You will not disintegrate a piece of stainless steel no matter how hard you try and I’ve never experienced any damage to wheels either or the plating that is on most parts. I have seen other professionals on YT also use ultrasonics too. I now use a cleaning machine I bought second hand mainly because it’s a waterless system and the fluids are far better at doing the job.

How did your manage to put the ultrasonic on 50C with so little water? I did something similar at 30C and the machine started smoking. I don't know if there wasn't enough water to soak up the great generated from the ultrasonic waves, or if the wire insulation was burning up. There is an easier way of cleaning the balance than doing it separately. Mount the balance assembly in its place on the main plate and after doing so remove its diashock jewels. You can then throw the main plate with the mounted balance in with the rest of the parts for cleaning. Much safer than fiddling with the balance on its own and it will get a better clean. That's how I do it anyway.

Hi, I have not tried WD40. I use water in the tank and cleaning fluids in the jars.

Come across this channel by accident, glad I did , I collect a variety of watches more modern stuff, but recently bought a 94, seiko 7002 , a1 , and love the fact that I can wear a watch that’s 25 yrs old that keeps reasonable time, but has been polished and modded , subbed and will look through your vids and look forward to your future videos , thanks Shane uk 🇬🇧

shaneweightman thanks Shane , glad you found my channel. Seikos are so robust I have found 40+ year old watches still running well completely unserviced. Joy of them is you can date them to the month and year so what you want to try to do is find a birth year watch! ( putting ideas into your head now) Thanks for subscribing

@@MyRetroWatches Aye the yellow stuff Mike it's the best degreaser out there. I've tried all sorts from IPA, lighter fluid, brake cleaner and fairy liquid I've used on vintage clocks for ages and the grim just floats off. Give it a try.

Very interesting to watch the whole restoration process! It's looking good! 😮 I love old advertisements and stuff from the '50's! 😀 That's very cool that you have the original booklet for the Brenray machine!

Mike, that was actually fascinating. It's tempting to scrape some of it, but I know the damage that would do. I am a bit curious as to why you didn't do the dial? Wouldn't it have been relatively safe to at least put it in the ultrasonic cleaner? At any rate, I'm really enjoying your videos! Many thanks.

Dials are often lacquered and the decals are transfers so you run the risk of removing them. My only cleaning method for a dial is rodico and on occasion a Q tip with saliva. As its the dial we look at the most I do not want to risk ruining this one.

I'm finding these great. The cleaning vids I very much appreciate. Hoping to do this sort of thing myself. I've bought tools and quite a few problem watches to start trying out service and cleaning watches. Thanks again.
