Cleaning Wheat for Seed

Every year I save some wheat from harvest to use as seed for next year's crop. I hire Mobile Seed Service to come to my farm to clean and treat the wheat so it gets a good stand. They built these setups themselves and have 3 of them, travelling around lower Michigan cleaning wheat, edible beans, and more. It's a neat setup, I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I do.

We used to take our wheat to the local co-op to clean it, but they didn't treat it. We then had a mobile unit clean and treat but he retired. Now we take our wagons to a local seed company to treat and clean it which is @ 10 miles away. We have to have better tires on the wagons now.

Hello Chris, love your vlogs! I'm in Eastern NC. Lots of farming here. I have a Case 830, Super A, and a D10 Allis Chalmers. My father had an Oliver 70 standard 1948 new, a rare 60 high crop that ran on gas or kerosene, and Moline. He truly loved the Oliver brand. I basically just play with my old tractors wish I had an Oliver 70. Always look forward to your videos. Love that new combine! Thanks for the encouragement 😊

We used to have a similar outfit come to our place and clean grain back in the 60-70s. He was very good at it but he got too old and shut down. After that we hauled it to the cleaners in town. More time spent trucking for sure.

Man that is a nifty set up. I have never seen a mobile seed cleaner like that. That's a great idea if you had enough local farmers to bring their seed to make it worth the cleaner's trip. Oh I keep forgetting how nice Ophelia turned out. What a beautiful tractor.

Great video as always Chris, that was pretty cool to see that seed processing. I can't figure out why Ophelia looks so pink on the videos.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 11 месяцев назад
It's a weird color. The lighting makes all the difference. Bright sunshine and she looks pink, pull her inside and she turns purple. Some of it is your screen. Once I recalibrated my computer screen she looks more purple. I think some of it is in our heads too. If I hold something pink next to her, then she really looks purple. Go figure.

I assume this process is cheaper than buying seed. What is the savings percentage-wise? Thanks for documenting this and explaining the process, I never knew this existed. Keep feeding America! 🇺🇸👍🏻
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 11 месяцев назад
It costs about $5 a bushel for him to clean and treat. I could sell the wheat for about $5.25, so it's about $10 a bushel. I think to buy seed is around $20 a bushel. It's been a couple years since I have bought new seed, so it may be higher. There's definitely a savings, but the wheat will be less true to the characteristics of the variety with each generation, so between that and newer, better genetics, it's a good idea to buy new seed from time to time.

Strange how it is from place to place. Up here cereals are extensively grown and most of the seed is kept, except if a guy wants to upgrade to a different variety. Almost every larger town has a seed cleaning plant and there is the odd mobile seed cleaning plant that comes around. I know a lot of seed companies would like that changed in Canada and they made a good try at getting our regulations changed a couple years back to basically outlaw having farmers use farm saved seed.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 11 месяцев назад
Used to be every local elevator cleaned and treated seed. Not too many do now. Then you have to haul it to them. I usually get more cleaned than this. I'll put it in pro boxes or the big seed bags so I don't have to tie up another wagon.

Difference in treated seed that went into the wagon and what went into bag? Another great job with the cameras.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 11 месяцев назад
The bag was just tailings. Shrunken kernels, straw, unthreshed, wheat, weed seeds and so on. I used to use it as cover crop, but then I got thinking about getting other guys weed seeds. That's why I give it to a friend to feed to his livestock.

I know certain states and counties don't allow the saving of seed to be used as a "next year" seeding, which is unfortunate. Seed cleaning should be a "must do", specially if one owned their own cleaner. Cheers :)

I've got the yoke on my 770 clutch screwed about all the way out. I guess the clutch has about had it? How hard is it to install a new one?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 11 месяцев назад
If you don't have power booster it's easy. The engine doesn't have to come out. Remove gas tank, sheet metal and pto long shaft. Unbolt the drive coupler and bell housing, slide them out and there it is.
@bendunkelman4853
@bendunkelman4853 11 месяцев назад
@@ThatOliverGuyChris it does have a power booster that doesn't work. Even if it did, I wouldn't use it. What would you do in my place?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 11 месяцев назад
@@bendunkelman4853 power booster parts are getting hard to find. I'd probably eliminate it, but that takes some work. The input shaft needs to be changed, you need a cover for the input., a shaft that goes between the clutch and transmission, and probably a few other odds and ends. The easiest solution is if it works in one range, leave it in that range and fix the main clutch. I'd have to look in the book as to splitting the power booster, but you can do it without pulling the engine.
