Great tutorial, Edwin (and great shop, I bought something from you!), I also use the editor viewer instead of rewinding arms (which currently do not have). Instead, when the films are clean but have different small folds, what you advice? Those small folds that i have in a few films, do not flow well the film in the projector (I have to use the key "loop" many times)!

for the small folds, try to flatten these as much as possible. If this does not work, you can cut out the effected frames.

This film cleaner is burning stuff.The Film get clean but the surface get also to dry.You need a special Film cleaner who give the Film a smooth surface. That is important because the dry Film can make a noise in the soundhead and can damage it from time to time.

Does it matter which one is the take up reel. Re 8mm movie film, the sprockets go toward me or away from me. Under hand, or over hand on the reels? Help!.
@VanEckVideo

for the cleaning it does not matter, just try out what works best for you.

...no matter what reel you have as the take-up reel....you'll screw the pooch by using this method.

Hello Mr. i just get some old reel 8mm. But the reel so dirty like the ink by the film. i wanna ask, can i use branch water to clean this film ? thank you Mr.
@VanEckVideo
@VanEckVideo 7 лет назад
please use filmcleaner for this! Many other liquids will realy harm the films. See my blog about this: www.van-eck.net/itable.php?lang=nl&size=0&cat=info&merk=255&type=Films

Using water to clean films, is not recommended! We took the test and put a piece of film in water for a week. The water soon began to color, not a good sign! After a week the water was completely brown and upon inspection of the film, it appears that the emulsion layer dissolves in water! So water is not a good idea to use to clean your films. See for the report: www.van-eck.net/itable.php?lang=en&size=0&cat=info&merk=255&type=Films

Is isopropyl alcohol any for cleaning film?
@VanEckVideo
@VanEckVideo 4 года назад
No do not use alcohol. This will dissolve the film: www.van-eck.net/img/itable/images/info_255_Films_1489759250857.jpg so for a test on using water/alcohol/film cleaner: www.van-eck.net/itable.php?lang=en&size=0&cat=info&merk=255&type=Films

@1:08 smashes film... LOL take care of the fragile film.. :P
@VanEckVideo
@VanEckVideo 4 года назад
It is good te set some pressure on the film when cleaning it. You can find the weak spots (bad spices) and repair these before these weaks spots break in the filmprojector or filmscanner. If that is the case you night get damage to the film there)

@@VanEckVideo Hi I was joking when the bottle hit the reel... I thought for a film about film care.. there was a little misstep..LOL Unless you say you do that a lot... bang on the reel?
6 лет назад
UPDATE: ...only a complete fool would use this method..ie: a minuscule HARD piece of dirt is on the film and you slide that film through your cloth covered fingers....it will scrape the film like nobody's business. This video is a fail.

Every method has it pros and cons. Which cleaning method do you suggest?
@luckyzert

Edwin, You gave an outstanding reply to a rude and foolish comment from someone who wants to play with the big boys. Your polite reply is an assumption all knowledgable filmmakers make when we decide to clean our films. We all appreciate the time you took to create this video tutorial for us. Ad my polite advice to Accolade...simply don't use this method to clean your film. I have used this approach and never had a problem

Thanks for the support. Yes, I agree fully with you. If you have the opinion that something is not good, explain your suggested alternative.
