Why wouldn't they go after the company that owns the ship to pay for the rebuild? They must have liability insurance and resources they can go after. The government can foot the bill up front and the lawyer's can sue for it in the years ahead. You know, hold them accountable.

Nobody has said that the government and multiple others aren't "going after" the ship company. But this work needs to be done and paid for immediately. To go after the company, i.e. to sue them, they have to establish every single detail about what happened, who's responsible, and everyone harmed by the company before they sue them! Suits are won on facts, not guessing what happened and who's responsible.

I live in the San Francisco bay area and in 2007 the Cosco Busan ran into what the Bay Bridge has as 'bumpers' built around the footing of the pillars that absorb impact and prevent, to a degree, this verything.

I agree w/ lewisd re dolphins for pier protection....looks like they had 2 small ones up/downstream but ship angle of attack just missed one. BUT it looked too small to have much affect. Looks at the Sunshine Skyway bridge in Tampa and the 32 large dolphins we installed to protect the spindally/skinny piers which also had rock riprap that would help ship go agrouund before impacting the piers. another bad Figg design that needed alot of help!

Barriers (dolphins) need to be put in to protect the pillars. It's a wonder why they weren't put in before. All bridges need to be reviewed and evaluated for protection.

That sure looks like a LIEBHERR LR1300 which is a 330T crawler crane. I do not believe it is the Chesapeake 1000.

FYI, Maritime Law, is unlike any civil law you may think you know........provides for Multiple liabilities of multiple parties, i.e. the ship, ship operaator, the port, port traffic, bridge design, etc. thats why it will be years probably unless NTSB does it's due diligence asap. Then ship will pay for at least a partial rebuild.

It will be collected eventually Im sure, but its better to get a new one built as soon as they can, than wait longer. I can only imagine the traffic backups in the detours around it people are taking now

The Golden Gate and Bay Bridges are built with buffers long before that crappy bridge was built Let’s remember that Baltimore was an economically depressed city in the seventies. The FS Key bridge was an anachronistic design long before Baltimore built it in 1977. That it built such an off the shelf design with so little protection reflects the economic realities of Baltimore in the day

I don’t know how they can predict how the wreckage of that cantilever truss will move when they start cutting it apart. There’s no way to know what the support conditions are and limited information on the damage to the connections especially those underwater given the visibility conditions. I know that I would not want to be the guy on the oxy torch or demo lance……… even if I was tied off to a separate crane.

As a senior engineer there’s a cluster of failures from the cargo ship R&D to worse with bridge designer why the other tower collapsed? It should should withstand such impacts that’s why the mix steel with concrete 🥶

Re salvage. We had a cofferdam hit by a tow in the MS River, 60' x 260' x 80' deep sheetpiles, 800 tons of c/d/ bracing. It took 355 days to clear all the debris and get us to where we were prior. MS river has 0% visibility. we used a similar stiff-leg derrick as they have in Balt

They have to examine the recorder and the maintenance of the ship. If this ship was not maintained then this was not an accident but inevitable. Someone who stands in the middle of the street and waits for a car to hit is not an accident.

Original bridge cost 1.2 billion $ ( adjusted $) and 3 years to build...lol....there is a 5 mile stretch of i30 in Arkansas that hasn't been completed in 5 years....this DOT is just another failure of the present administration policies...

The real civil engineering question is why hadn't the Maryland Department of Transportation built properly configured dolphins (bumpers) to address a modern ship mass? I suspect this failure will be blamed on someone who has died. You can't prevent all accidents, so you put in protection structures. There should have been a study and reasons it wasn't done in the Department. If not, that shows a failure also. Some reporter should investigate this, because this is where a big story is.

Some have wondered if the bumpers would have saved it and the bridge was installed in 1977 and this is the first issue since it was constructed. Plus hide sight is 20/20

The pillars took a direct hit. A ship the size of an aircraft carrier with the amount of weight (mass) moving at approximately 8 mph along with the current wouldn't be stopped or deflected by bumpers or fenders around the pylons.

That was the east span(Oakland side) of the SF Bay Bridge. The container ships travel under the west side (SF side) If you were too compare the two areas, this is more akin to the GG bridge in the relation to SF harbor at large and Bmore harbor.

also, reporters played the "poor migrant" card but Im guessing they were making $28-35/hr and for sure had Workers Comp Insurance....though tragic they lost thier lives their families will have some compensation. If the families hire an atty and the ship is found 100% liable, under maritime law, they wil all become millionaires, albeit later rather than sooner.

That's what you think would have prevented this accident? They had seconds to react. You need distance and enough time for an anchor to stop a ship that big with that much mass moving forward, plus the current pulling it towards the ocean.
