Micah was raised in upstate New York and joined the military in 2003, later becoming a US Navy Seal and paramilitary contractor. Micah started Heroes and Horses in 2014 after realizing that, despite the thousands of PTSD-related nonprofits, and the billions spent every year, the statistics on veteran suicide and addiction were growing rapidly. In response to these staggering statistics, Micah created a veteran nonprofit with programming that was unlike anything else out there. His work with veterans has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Men's Journal, Tedx, YETIs 180 Out, Executive Producer of the 500 Mile Project, Ben Shapiro, Laura Ingraham, and many other national media outlets. When Micah isn't working, traveling, or spearfishing off the coast of a foreign land he is on a small ranch with his wife, Mackenzie, and their four children.

I can't believe how good this episode was. I listen to a the usual suspects. Everyday. I've never made a comment. Never felt the need to. And, there's been some incredible ones in these podcast circuits. However, this one touched my soul. On a real level. Unlike any other before. Absolutely fascinating. While simultaneously hilarious at some moments. Thank you so much for this guys!! I've sent this to a several close friends and family members. I came home from work and told my wife about it. Just incredible!

2018 class 3 H&H graduate here. Changed my life, I still draw from my experiences in the back country today.. it’s true! In the end I realized that everything I was looking for was already inside me … I realized that I was the one creating my own prison. Thank you Micah and team for putting me in a process to take the key and unlock my cell. Present day I’m a loving father, I volunteer in the community and I’m a business owner. Living life on my terms and following my purpose. Before H&H I could barely hold a job because of the reality I created. Thank you to all who support the program.. God Bless and TreatEmRough

There's a great book called Denying the Soul. The author is M. Scott Peck. A great book on necessary pain which is the emotional pain vs physical pain. "Growing old is inevitable growing up this optional". Is a great author he also wrote: The Road Less Travelled and Beating To A Different Drum, etc.. He's not only a great author he was a United States army psychotherapist at the pentagon and he is so humorous and funny. His details of many stories and one of his best audios was self love versus self esteem. Really helped in raising teenagers and understanding myself a little more 😅

Fruitful discussion thank you both. Actually the Lakota ceremonies have not entirely been "lost" just a few a hardly performed and not open to outsiders. There are fewer Wicasca Wakan (Medicine men-approximate translation) who have the training and commitment and know the language these days. I was privileged to be part of those ceremonies in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Was a Sundancer (Wiwayang Wacipi) for many years with the Lakota and as part of a four year commitment with the Menominee. For more first hand knowledge contact me via message. Have 5 sons that I raised alone! My husband died when my youngest was 2 yrs old! Had a grade 9 education & right off the reserve, Pine Ridge, South Dakota and Alberta Canada! My husband was a Canadian Cree! Had to go back to school to raise these boys and in those days, there was no money or resources for school so like many others, I worked 2 jobs and used student finance for a loan! Raised my boys in 1 of the toughest cities in Alberta-Medicine Hat-Rudyard Kipling said, “ Medicine Hat has all hell for a basement “ gas & oil and Lakeside packers -meat slaughtering company was the only place one could find work! Just to make a long story every son did time in the Army except my oldest-Don has a club foot and he was not allowed to serve in the forces so he joined the militia and became an off road on mechanic and a pressure B welder! We were stationed at the British Block- CFB Suffield and Ralston! We had British, American, Canadian troops and shared skills and knowledge! The most insane group were the Irish Black Guards! The Brits were well trained and very precise! The Americans showed a lot of ingenuity and creativity! The Americans had the most organized sleeping quarters! You could bounce a quarter on their beds! The Canadians were reserved and very courteous until it was time to fight & suddenly Dr. Jekyll disappeared and Mr. Hyde showed up! However, the Irish Black Guards appeared disorganized and disheveled-bare knuckle fighting was a thing-crazy but every group wanted the Irish beside them in a fight bc there was no quit in them-extremely loyal! In any event Micah reminded me of my sons! 🦅🌸🦅🙏🏽🦅🌸🦅👵🏽👋🏾🪶 Dr. Kathy BorthwickChalifoux BScMScDSW

In 2017, the VA released a report on Veteran Suicide. The thing that blew my mind is that almost 6 out of 10 Veteran Suicides are over the age of 55. Then almost 5 out of every 10 never deployed. Those Veterans were lost because they have so much shame because they felt they were never allowed to do the job they were trained for. I think we completely forget about these two groups.

1:14:15 - "Why do you think some veterans go down that path (psych meds & inability to cope) and others escape it?" This is a question Ive grappled with for many years. I dont understand how I was able to compartmentalize for so many years and not have it destroy me...yet so many other guys struggle. I always thought I was an anomaly.
