Excellent video Jan! Great work cleaning the corrals. Nice to have a quick fix for the crowd gate. Loved the New Year's festivities! My family has a traditional dish like the one your lovely mother fixed. Many people eat it with powdered sugar, but I like mine with honey and butter or cinnamon/sugar. Thanks for a great year with your family and awesome employees!
I went to Ag school,,,, where I’m from they shove manure into piles until the conditions are right to remove it. Studies were done and cattle with those piles in the pen gained better than those without the piles,,,,they don’t know why but they did . Exercise,mood, etc…..
Those piles produce heat and the cattle lay on them and stay warm. Pretty cool deal really. In our area everyone makes great big manure piles in their pens. Keeps them Dry when it’s muddy and warm when it’s really cold.
Yep. I pile up the manure in my pens. It creates heat, they make a nice bed so they are comfortable, it provides excersize as they climb the piles, it decomposes better, keeps them dry. You do have to remove the sloppy muck and keep a clean eating area though. Jan, great video! Love your channel, watching from my yak farm in Minnesota.
I don’t know if you get these late comments. I’m binge watching from the oldest available to present day. Watching your Mom make Olie Bolle (sp?) brought back memories. I live in Southwest Michigan where many Dutch immigrants settled and am familiar with the hard work ethic and other cultural aspects. My Mom made Ollie Bolle frequently in my childhood, either with raisins or diced apple and we love it! If your Mom is willing to share her recipe I would greatly appreciate it. Love the videos! Entertaining and educational!

Never heard of them, but I love raisins and would love to have the recipe if possible she could share it with us, and would be a great added bonus to see more cooking from her on some of the different dishes she makes on the Dutch side of cooking.
I now follow your weather. I just had not grasped how cold it is in Canada. We in the UK had a couple of cold weeks in December down to -7C. But since then just wet wet wet. I think we are due for a few frosts next week down to -3C. I think you call that a heatwave. And you are further south than me.

Curious: On the loader (and tractors) do you ever liquid fill the tires for better traction?? I use to work at a rural tire store (decades ago) and would be assigned to fill tractor tires with calcium chloride (if I recall correctly)... it prevented freezing. The added weight really help traction.

But the powdered sugar is made from sugar beets, so it counts as a vegetable, too! Could als do a little chocolate on them -- made from cocoa beans, so another vegetable product.

It's a moot point, but I wonder if radiant heating in the slab would thaw out the boundary between the slab and the frozen manure and make it easier to peel off.

Prior to pouring the cement for the 10 feet of pad they stand on wouldn't it be a benefit to run hot water heat through the cement? Cheap and easy. Well, cheap when its done while the cement is being poured.
One common thing that I see over all the dairy farmers I follow is manure management. It is a big part of what you folks do. When you were at the World Ag Expo Tulare Ca. last spring you also toured Vanderham’s dairy operation. They had a large manure handling facility built to manage it which also included a sizeable methane capture project. Fast forward a year and in December at the Phoenix CNH Industrial show New Holland unveiled their new T7 LNG 270 HP tractor that runs on the same methane. It has been demoing in England and so far the results seem favourable. Watching you work that big piece of equipment for hours removing the manure it only makes sense that that same product could be powering your machine. I am not sure how our climate world work for methane capture but if New Holland wanted to trial one on the Canadian prairies I think you guys with your lagoon setup would make a great choice!
Hi, Love the oliebollen you were making! I remember helping ladies of the Auxiliary at our local old folks' home (the ladies were from Germany, made oliebollen. They made them just like your mother was doing. I am assuming that you were dipping them in sugar when you ate them! Good and good for you!!!
After cleaning the frozen dung off the concrete, especially at the gateway as it looked, isn't the concrete slippy for the animals? I'd be putting a bit of sand down to ensure nothing goes down, especially at new year etc when you don't need problems.
