I'm guessing you eventually remember a kept component to your barge. It's called a spud barge and the legs are the spuds. You pull in to where you want to be and drop the spuds to keep it in position. The spuds are free to go up and down so if you have tides (which you don't other than seasonal fluctuations) or as you lead and unload the spuds keep it located. Things are looking good. Binging away to catch up. Opal is such a sweetie. Hope she loses some of her anxiety. ❤
@mywildholm
@mywildholm 3 дня назад
Welcome to our channel! We have never used the spuds on our barge as we have been advised not to use them in our lake - apparently, we'd never get them back up out of the silty, thick muddy bottom again...
@quarlow1215
@quarlow1215 3 дня назад
@@mywildholm hmm, well you would need winches for lifting them. But we had a spud barge in at our frontage property on the North Arm of the Fraser to load an excavator a company needed to move up river. When they dropped the spuds they sunk 14 feet before they stopped. They had no trouble lifting them. I know that on Bobtail lake south of Vanderhoff the bottom is pretty silty and a friend has his dock on legs which he pulls by hand ever fall to remove it before freezing. But the locals would know best. You could also just lower the spuds far enough to just keep the barge located. I was going to mention about your ramps. If you put hinged posts about midspan of the ramps and a chain from the tip to the post, then attach the winch to the post you get triangulation and leverage making them easy to lift. Because the posts are hinged at the ramp when you lowered the ramps the posts will lay forward out of the way for loading.
@mywildholm
@mywildholm День назад
That is a great idea, to have auto-folding ramps like that. I wonder what it would take in terms of fabricating to make that work. I will look into that. Thank you for this terrific suggestion! -Ryan

If you have a chance, you might want to haul a load of gravel over on the barge to cover the ramp to the old cabin. The gravel might help with the mud on the ramp plus keeps things from slipping

Something to consider for sure. We are actually looking into 1 yard aggregate bags to help us keep everything contained during transport from the pit to the trailer to the barge to the island. Thank you for the suggestion! -Ryan.

Hopefully you have learnt to use the barge spuds and the motor together to manoeuvre it and help hold it in position when loading and unloading. You shouldn't even need ropes just keep adjusting the spuds as the load comes off the barge. Logs in the muddy lake edge would also work as a makeshift ramp to help support the machines so they don't sink into the mud, since you have an abundance of fallen logs you could do this for all your soft ground until you get drainage rock to form a base for any roadways.
@mywildholm
@mywildholm Месяц назад
Actually, I have not resinstalled the spuds yet. Not sure I will because without then, have much greater maneuverability on the deck in terms of being able to bring on wide loads that hang off the port and starboard sides. I have learned to use the motor to help with loading/unloading when not tied off. It makes things more stable and prevents the barge from leaving the shore. Good advice... thank you! -Ryan

Having Pepper has changed the game for us! We also love being able to dislodge the barge if it grounds... as well as do all the other wonderful things that we couldn't do before. No pretenses here... we will use the modern conveniences out here but we wanted a more self sustainable life where we aren't as dependant on others. Food, water, heat... plus we love the solitude of the wilderness and the beauty of nature. We've both worked very very hard during our lifetimes and this is the absolute best way we can think of to go into our sunset years together.

I tell ya you guys are doing awesome. When we got our land it was very overgrown and we went through with a bush hog (slasher in Australia) type mower and just smashed all the small srubs down. It made a massive difference. Have you thought about a little hydraulic hiab crane on the barge ( I think you should call him Barry 😂) Having a bit of machinery on you home will be a game changer like a little tractor with some implements for it would be so handy . I am hanging out for the next instalment of this undeliverable island adventure. 👍🏽👍🏽
