My first wash is just about to this point! I placed my carboy’s in the basement with heat mats to ferment last night! I have followed your videos almost to a T. So far everything has gone well.
Hi. George, Thanks for the clarifying tip. When I do a wine kit, the instruction say that I have to stir for 15 minutes after adding the kielsol and then after twenty four hours , to stir for two minutes after adding the Chitosan. Does the procedure differ between wine and spirits? BTW, I did not know that you could clarify twice. That is great. Thanks again
First off I really enjoy all of the videos. I’ve learned a great amount. I do have a question after watching this video, do you or have you used Turbo Carbon when pitching your yeast. Is it necessary or does it have any adverse effect on the mash?
Hey George good to meet you. Am triyng to make rubbing alchohol. I have a 2 liter bottle fermenting brown sugar and a 3 liter bottle also. What would be my next step?
Do you have a video that makes every step by step by Brewing mostly appreciated thank you very much everything you have done for the public and all of yours listeners really interested in all that you have to offer I am one of them....
Gidday from Down Under mate 😊 Just letting you know your vids rock! Your clear as crystal, straight to the point and very informative. Keep up the great work my friend. Would love a link to your fb page please?
I know this an older video but at around 5:48 you're saying that your will transfer them and use turbo clear again, do you mean that you will transfer them to another 5 gallons without the bottom sediment and put turbo clean A and B again a let it sit to make it a cleaner mash?
Question- Turbo Clear (Still Spirits) contains crustaceans. I am allergic to shellfish, my first reaction is to not use this product. What could I use in place of this?
Doug TN I wonder same I have let mine sit four days once .. guessing would depend on abv. And environment .possible type of mash ..I'm not expert all just educated guessing...
George can this be accomplished in a fast ferment? Instead of racking can you just drain the solid particulate out of the bottom of the FF? You recommend always clearing twice? Thank you!
Hi Guys, Its my first brew Vodka, I have added the Turbo Clear part A after 3 days of fermenting Doh! Shall I through away and start again??? Looking for a quick response pleeeeze
I make a habit of tapping the carboy on the sides to shake the sediments stuck to the sides quite a bit will fall down , Stuff sure works ,PS Seen a Russian video guy used an Egg to coagulate the sediments , And another system he used Milk right from the cow darn thing swirled and fell like a rock Unbelievable Have a great trip Today George to Florida ...
I enjoy your videos. Can the mash be cleared by use of ceramic filters, such as is available with the Berkey system? Seems counter productive to add another particulate to remove particulates.
Ceramic filters are more appropriate for wine and have been used in industry for a long time. Not sure I can answer this one. Allowing the mash to settle before distilling seems to be just fine so I am not sure i would use ceramic filtering. Just seems a little over-kill to me. The purpose of clearing mash is to eliminate the solid particulates so they don't scorch in the heated environment. When it comes to wine the ceramic plates are used to clarify the wine so it looks more appealing and clear. George
Thank you, George. I greatly appreciate the time and effort you take to create and publish these videos. Your congenial communication skills make your presentations informative and enjoyable. I get a kick out of when you misplace items, I find myself scanning your visible work area trying to locate the items for you. I subscribed to your channel. Brum
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I have never had it work in 24 hours. I do a sugar wash with turbo yeast(usually the classic)and carbon in an 8gl fermenter. I follow the instructions to a t but I always end up just having to wait for gravity to do the job and I feel like I'm getting ripped off. I was hoping you might have some knowledge on why it might not work? Thanks for your great videos.
Degassing your wash really helps. The addition of carbon can also have a slowing effect on the turbo clear. Try degassing and skip the carbon next time. George
Hello Sir, What other Options do I have. I don´t get Kiselsol oder Chitosan in here. Irish moos, or Gelatine (beersupplier) will work? THANKS VERY COOL CHANNEL BY THE WAY
Irish Moss is more suited for beer but the gelatin would help. Isinglass is another product sold for beer that will work. It is very similar to turbo clear.
if one finds, after incorporating parts A and B into solution, that not enough parts A and B were utilized together, can parts A and B be reintroduced to the solution with satisfactory results?
royenfield2 I'm wondering the same thing. I used a pack on 6 gallons of wine and didn't clear all the way even after 4 days. Tried another pack and now the yeast looks fluffy and odd looking since adding the 2nd pack. Kinda worried!
Hi George, firstly I got to say I'm very much a beginner at this and I'm still at the "collecting info" stage but I got to say your vids really are a great help in clarifying things for me, what I'd like to know is why is it that pretty much everyone says not to use aluminium pots etc for distilling but no one actually explains why, now I've been cooking / warming things in aluminium pans for many years and I'm still here ?
This is an old tale told many times by many people. Aluminum is perfectly safe as long as you do not use bleach to clean it or scrub down to a shiny finish. The dull finish is a passive oxide layer that protects the contents from the aluminum. Aluminum is not recommended for beer but is acceptable. Remember that beer is not distilled so there is more risk of imparting a metallic flavor in beer from the aluminum. Most of our community are distilling which would remove any of that metallic taste through the distillation process if it did exist. Bottom line: Aluminum is perfectly fine and stainless steel is a little bit better. Hope this helps George
Many thanks , that helps me a lot and , especially now when cash is a bit tight that long un-used pressure cooker is starting to look like a mighty attractive still ! Once again thanks, your vid's are a great help and long may you brew !!
I did and had the same feeling. It appears to be really dirty. I am sure there is a benefit but I am opposed to the appearance and the clean up needed after use. I prefer turbo clear over this.
@@BarleyandHopsBrewing I racked it into a carboy and it was very gritty looking ,, like coal dust mixed with water,, dark,,, couldn't see through it at all ,, grit in the bottom of the buckets I used ,, I put turbo clear into it yesterday and It has taken alot of it to the bottom ,, can see the buildup now around 2 inches has settled,, its still kinda brackish looking but can see through it somewhat ,, so unless it tastes really good I will never use it again,,
Hey! George hope your keeping safe from the bat juice going around. Could you please help me. I have done my wash and used still spirits carbon then the two part A and B formula but it’s still black nothing has dropped after 24hrs should I leave it a little longer or add another part B. Hope you can help. Chris
Not sure. This is the reason I do not use the carbon. Just seems a little too dirty for me. Maybe wait a few days to see if it settles. You did degas before clearing I assume. George
if it doesn't clear after 24 hours of part A and B you can use another Turbo clear, I had a problem when a kit that promised 23% failed to produce anything over 16%, with that 100g of yeast, nutrient and charcoal gave me one heck of job clearing. so, I had a choice, throw 5 gallons down the drain or use another turbo clear
Hey George hope all is good with you I was wondering I am new to this hobby and i have a 10 gallon all copper still wanting to still every weekend do i need to do a vinegar/water cleaning run every week before I use still or am I safe to just put my mash/wash in and go? Plz help as I have followed all ur videos any learned so much from you
Thank you very much for all your help I really appreciate it and another question will spirit straight from still harm u if it is unfiltered probably a dumb question but just wanted to ask 1st. Lol
Im doing this in the woods and need to do this quick like . can i jus dump the wash into a bucket while filtering it threw a lets say a t shirt instead of useing turbo clear???
Certainly. The object of clearing is to have all the sediment settle to the bottom so you can pour clean mash into the still. If you are not able to do this a little filtering as you describe is better than no filter or no clearing at all. Of course, you results will not be the same as the home (not in the woods) method we use. Good luck George
@@BarleyandHopsBrewing Don't waste your time on using a teashirt. Yeast is extremely tiny & you'll catch nothing. If you try a carbon filter, you'll clog it in seconds due to the huge amount of yeast. At a pinch, try using bentonite but you will still need to leave it overnight ti get any effects. This Turbo clear is nowhere as good as it used to be so I have tried MANY alternatives.
This does not kill yeast. Cold crashing works just as well but not everyone has a large enough cold space to do so. Harvesting the yeast is always an option for anyone, even after using turbo clear. George
Time is/was the most effective. Over a period of time gravity will force all the sediment to the bottom. There are a few other ingredients like bentonite ( really a fine clay) that is used as well and has been for years but time is always a go to method if you have no other means.
I'm new to distilling have my third run bout ready 5 gal o g sugar water .. but have done cornmeal twice and it was always separated come time to run ..other run wash a potato mash with molasses. ..anyways I had a hell of a time filtering mash to wash am I just wasting my time filtering it should I just dump it all siphoning off only the top ? Also wanted to possible reuse sediments on next fermenting if desired taste of product. ,And thirdly if I do wanna filter mash what is best way ... Maybe I should watch vid first not even sure of this content yet ...plz reply an avid watcher and sub. Of your channel ...
How do I get in touch with you sir? Long story short, I've watched alot of your videos and others like you, recently purchased a 20 gallon all copper pot still with thumper and am looking to try my hand at distilling some spirits and see if I have the touch. Eventually I'd like to actually start my own craft distillery and try to get my foot in the door with the Kentucky bourbon mafia in hopes to make a name for myself. I've pretty much got all the basics covered, I know right about the grain to water ratio I'm looking to stick to, plan to stick to roughly 55%-65% flaked corn and round out the other 25%-35% with a couple different plays with malted rye, malted 6 row, maybe try some red wheat or some caramel malts maybe some chocolate malts just look for different flavors nobody else is really doing. I think I want to go with the classic 8 turbo for my yeast, thought about maybe trying a couple different wine and champagne yeasts but unsure how they'll affect flavor. I want high alcohol yield so I'm able to cut it precisely to the proof I want. All of my plan is pretty well set in place I'm just really unsure how to go about keeping my yeast bed out of my pot and using the turbo clear for a cleaner product, is the activated carbon worth using, what's going to be the best way for me to siphon from my ferm vessel to my pot keeping all the solids out of my wash to distill. I've got 2 30gal drums with lids and airlocks plus 2 200w aquarium heaters to maintain temp will fermenting. I would just like some well educated guidance on getting started and learning what to do to achieve the desired outcome. I want to stay away from any and all added sugars, I don't want to use enzymes to convert, the 6 row has plenty of DP to turn corn starches to fermentable sugars. I have alot of questions as you can see. I just want to better my chances of turning out a high quality whiskey without all the trial and error.
Sorry. I forgot to change it officially when we switched to an LLC. The original link works and it is barleyandhopsbrewing.com Thanks for letting me know George
I'm on the fence with this one. It works but I prefer turbo clear. Active carbon is a little messy. It works well but in my opinion not as quickly as turbo clear. Hope this makes sense George
Why not save $5 and just let it cleat in a week? Spend the $5 on another plastic car boy. During the flocculation the yeast will clean up the fermentation.
