I used to plow our gravel road with my old D6 cat, but I only had a 10 foot blade, so it wasn't optimal. Most we ever got was about 10 inches of snow. That hardest part was trying no to dig down into the road, which made me wish I had a float position.

Great video, I’m a 37 year blade operator for a county road dept in western Iowa. I’m also an instructor for Iowa Sate University’s MOGO program. We offer a training program for new and old moter grader operators. We cover summer road maintenance and snow removal. I’ve subscribed to your videos, maybe we can share some or part of your videos. I also have a channel with a few Grader videos. Thanks.

The small city I live in is very hilly they used to use these 1950s and 60s models to clear snow all the time. They were much better than the front end loaders they use these days.

More video of the machine working and less video of you. I am not wanting to be rude or nasty. I just want to see more of the grader workings and the landscape around you. I did enjoy your audio contribution. Do you have a magnetic base for your camera to show the many different viewing angles as you work - both inside the cab and outside? I just subscribed and am looking forward to more videos. I have a limited amount of seat-time in a grader while I was in the US Navy Seabees. I remember plowing snow while I was stationed at the US Navy base in Brunswick, Maine. Good memories. May God Bless America
@frankshomestead
@frankshomestead 2 года назад
Good question Rich. As I had said inthe video I did NOT have anyway to attach my camera in the grader. Most of the cab as you know is glass and where there is metal there is no good angle for the blade. I have been trying out how to get better footage with what I own. Was there something specific you were interested in or looking for? And DITO to God bless America sir!
@richbusche4321
@richbusche4321 2 года назад
Well sir, as much as possible I would like to have the same frontal view that you have. That would include the landscape around you the front wheels the blade and generally the front of the machine. Occasionally it would be nice to see the side blade pushing snow back. Maybe you could talk about the maintenance points on your machine. Things that you need to do, things that you look at before you take it out each time. I have never been to northern Idaho but in my minds eye it must be a beautiful place in any season of the year.

The cutting edge is really costly. I belive it was over a grand to buy. The teeth are replaceable.

Our biggest problem is we can't get the snow all the way off the edge of the road cause we don't have a wing like you and that causes the forest service to get mad and fine us 1k every year
@frankshomestead

@@danietkissenle do you have a front blade? And if so does your machine articulate? If yes to both then I would use the front blade to get it off the road all the way. If not then "that sucks"

Nice video and a beautiful day to be removing snow on a grader, are those Sandvik blades/ teeth you are using in this video? After 25 years of intermittently operating graders in the Canadian arctic (Champions, Volvos and Cats), recently I started doing snow removal using my first ever John Deere out on the east coast which was also my first ever time on a 6 wheel drive grader, a newer 772G. My impression now that I’m used to using this grader dealing with these east coast storms is that the front wheel drive sure would have been a nice option to have when using the sloper and wing attachments in the past. (Does anyone else reading this use a sloper to pull snow down out of high snow drifts for a blower following behind you?) Additionally I think that the John Deere seems to be a quality, well balanced machine which to me means a lot. Anyways I’d sure like to have the grader parked in my driveway and start out from home like you do!
@frankshomestead
@frankshomestead 2 года назад
Yes they are the sandvik blades. I like them as an all around ice and snow blade because they donot wear as fast and it is easier to change them out. I like the JD`s also but without the wing on I find that my 772BH is a bit light but that 6WD has gotten me out of some pretty bad situations. Good luck with the rest of your snow season. Ours is pretty much done here in the pacific NW.
@squangan
@squangan 2 года назад
@@frankshomestead Yes, our snow season is pretty much over here as well except for maybe a late season storm or two is still possible. I especially appreciated using the Sandviks for scratching up the ice covered northern roads during the extreme cold temperatures when the ice really hardened up, as you say the bits last a lot longer than regular ice blades do. The grader I’ve been running recently has those ribbed construction type tires still on it from the factory and they’re pretty poor for winter use, the 6wd sure helped keep me moving as my current employer doesn’t supply tire chains (all flat roads and a small district). I’ve had the pleasure of touring through Idaho several times over the years. Anyways, take care.
@frankshomestead
@frankshomestead 2 года назад
