Clearing Unwanted Food from Combs

Often, beekeepers end up with combs that have food stored in them that they need clearing. This could be crystallised honey or old sealed honey. Roger shows us a technique for getting the bees to remove the food leaving empty combs for reuse.

Very interesting - I’m going to give this a go with some frozen frames of mixed honey/nectar/pollen that I haven’t known what to with. Thank you for sharing 🙂👍

Tried this with a box of thawed frames of capped honey, pollen and nectar. After a week the girls had shifted the nectar and some pollen but not the capped honey (yet). This makes sense (move the easiest food first) but wondering should I uncap the honey to help them to shift it?

Bees are certainly more likely to move stores if they aren't capped.

@@BIBBA_UK Thanks for sharing this method. After a few tweeks along the way, we have had success 🙂👍 My learnings are: 1. It took longer than I thought (1-2 weeks) even with a strong colony 2. Nectar and uncapped honey was completely removed, uncapped honey and pollen not moved even after an extended period 3. Noted an increase in robbing attempts, successfully fought off by my strong colony but worth noting if attempting with a not so strong hive. Will definitely use this again, thanks and good luck!
