Clematis is a beautiful vine, typically seen growing across an arbor or a trellis. Some types of the vine can grow up to 25 feet, while others may only reach the height of two or three feet. It’s important to plan where you want your Clematis to grow so you can buy the proper sized variety. The climbing vines also come in several different colors and flower type.
Not all Clematis bloom at the same time. Some types bloom only in the spring. Some bloom in both the spring and the fall. And others don’t begin blooming until the summer, but then bloom on and off all summer long. These blooming patterns and the lengths of the vines themselves can usually be found on the plant’s tag.
The recommended planting dates for Clematis are May 15 - July 15. It’s best to plant Clematis in an area that gets lots of sunshine and where the root zone can be kept in mulch that is about two inches deep. The roots need to be a bit moist and cooler than the rest of the plant. Clematis vines can grow in any good garden soil. Many Clematis can be grown in containers.
Remember to be cautious while handling Clematis because it is a poisonous plant. Some people may develop a rash from handling the stems. Many people choose to wear gloves when working with the vine.
