Lightning Returns story in a nutshell: "Somehow, everyone's alive by the end. And this god is an asshole."

Clement, I am completely shocked and appaulled at you. You put her in a suit and sunglasses and never made the obvious Blues Brothers reference.

Here's something you probably didn't know about the combat: *There's a timing system to your commands!* I didn't figure this out until New Game+, but instead of holding down the buttons for your attacks, there is actually a rhythm to them that if you press the button at the right time, the attack gets a damage and stagger bonus. The timing windows for physical attacks and magic are different. When I found this out, the battles became even more engaging than before.

man, poor Sazh. He's by far my favorite character in the 13 universe and all they do with him is the same thing over and over again: caring about his son. Yes, being a loving, caring father is a nice thing, but please give that man something else to do.

Sazh is actually walking around the moogle village looking for the fragments after you start his quest which I thought was pretty cool randomly running into him there

Lightning going to our Earth and becoming a fashion model is the most bizarre thing I've ever seen from this series, lmao. At first before he said it was supposed to be our Earth, I almost thought that it was the world of FFXV in order to tie into its XIII Versus roots, and that would've been a really cool lead-in.

That's a strategy! Personally, I just go for perfect blocks. You know, when you block just as the attack hits? It also brings the enemy stagger up? One thing the game doesn't explain you that I found completely by accident? That one!

The Aerith costume for Lightning makes sense since they're both voiced by Maaya Sakamoto in Japanese.

Ive loved every moment so far of the retrospective clement

On my second playthrough on hard mode, I finished all quests in the game and hunted every enemy species to extinction (the ones that can go extinct anyway) and still had like 2-3 days left.

Ah finally, the last instalment in my favourite film trilogy (The reviews I mean not the games)

This game has SO MUCH potential for a remake. Imagine the concept, just done in the way FF7R handles FF7. A world trapped between life and death, cults in crumbling cities, a constantly ticking timer until the end of the world. But with good execution ALL around. The same systems, just better, and in the modern engine. Not a remaster, but a re-do. That for all of the XIII games is something I would LOVE to see from the franchise after XVI.

Clement what your experiencing is what we call 4 move slot syndrome in Pokémon. The Pokémon has an assload of good moves, but anything you put together still makes it feel somewhat vulnerable.

Gotta say, your review sums up a lot of my own thoughts of this game. This is also coming from a big fan of the original (it has a lot of problems but I really like it for what it is). I can handle the game's weak story, but if the 13-3 only had a better open world it would've been a 5/5 for me. The combat is just so, SO good man. Looking forward to your 14 review, I still have to properly play that game for myself (and a new monitor to go with my fancy new PC) so in a way I'm glad it won't be for a while until that happens. For the record, there is a zoom-out function for the battle camera, to see more of the field. Most of your footage has it zoomed in.

I wouldn't say lightning returns is hard. you can grab strong garbs early even the strongest ones, become invincible, and even get strong weapons early. for combat i'm suprised you didn't talk about overclock or perfect timing guard or attacks.

I don't pretend to be expert on Final Fantasy but boy does it seem like XIII's world went all over the place with it's lore compared to other games.

Lightning Returns was the only entry in the XIII trilogy I owned... I liked it It was fun

Did you never do The Ultimate Lair? It's a secret dungeon that partly exists to alleviate your "Last One" problems, since it lets you fight almost every Last One in the game (save for a few enemies that only spawn in the Last Dungeon, meaning you can only finish that Quest on a NG + run). Even if you haven't killed enough of an enemy, the Last One will still spawn in the Ultimate Lair and can make the Species extinct just by slaying said enemy.

I remember restarting my 1st playthrough after a few hours after I wasted a day or two with the issues Clement mentioned but I did enjoy my time with the game. Looking back at the issues mentioned, it does feel like some didn't get a lot of thought put into them At least in the bonus dungeon (where you can kill all Last Ones) we can finally beat a boss that was in limbo since the 1st FF13

Wow, this was, by far, the most positive take on 13-3 I've seen. Nearly got whiplash. But it was refreshing on it's own merits. You got a way with your retrospectives. Also, you'll probably be hitting up Johnny for any 14 help, but if you end up on Aether instead, feel free to ask. I’ve been itching for this video for months!!!! Literally rewatched the older videos a couple days ago!! Thank you man!! About to enjoy dinner now that this is available Also, I’ve learned something new in between preparing to watch this video, I finally understand why they made 3 versions of 13...I once saw an animator say how easy it was to create a sequel to a CG animated film once you have the assets and groundwork already laid for a new intellectual property, you can then pump out as many as you want because you don’t have to build a new world and idea from scratch / the ground up. Same must’ve went for 13 while going through development hell for the follow up games, so they likely kept building on lightening’s story. Which is why so many were shocked that a sequel was made, they already worked extremely hard to create it, they didn’t want the efforts to go in vain. Also, I learned that the developers were inspired by Skyrim when they created this lol explains a lot of the washed out colors in luxerion.

Between the plethora of costumes that appear in cutscenes and timer counting down, lightning returns seems to take some inspiration from dead rising

I think the one thing that works against the schedule system is the time limit, with no way to get time back if you fuck up. Majora's Mask lets you go back in time, and Western RPGs like the Witcher games don't have the time limit, and let you fast forward to certain times, so they are more forgiving with it. Although missing sidequests because you didn't notice a certain npc who only shows up at like noon is an issue with witcher.

Clement I have been a subscriber since 2008 when I would watch your Megaman LP's just so I could know how to beat the games myself. I've been a huge fan for years. I remember watching your webcam review of FF13-3 here and being equally if not even more angry than you were with the game at the time. I used to really like the Spoony Experiment and always wanted to make videos like his, it was a dream of mine to recount my endless memories of Final Fantasy in a video series of my own, but considering how in depth and perfectly structured your editing is, I don't know if I should even waste the hundreds of hours on Sony Vegas when I would basically be regurgitating everything you said. On one hand, thank you for everything you've done. It feels like someone has finally said all the things I ever wanted to say about this stupid game, but finally put it behind us. I'm kinda sad I'll never be able to record my own FF13-3 documentary, but thank you for making it as though I never would have needed to.

Clement I'm sure people have told you by now but you were able to change the camera angle in battles in order to see further back and thus see everything in the battle field. For my Xbox controller its press down the button that moves the camera

One note about some of the sidquests: you should have paid attention to the food one. The dish you made is stated to have originated 500 years ago, and was made by Snow's friends. So it's like a way to connect with the past.

Fun fact: Lightning Returns has the longest final boss theme in the series, at SEVENTEEN MINUTES WITHOUT LOOPING. For comparison, Dancing Mad is nine and a half minutes without any of its phases looping, and FF7 Remake’s One-Winged Angel is about ten minutes without looping.

My takeaway from this video: ... When did Snow get hot? All the guy needed to do was lose the stupid beanie, get a better coat, and BAM, sexy vampire look. Just goes to show that there's hope for all of us!

I agree that just adding quest markers and guiding the player would make the time limit less stressful. I actually like being guided because I don’t feel like I am wasting my time.

Loving these series. This battle system sounds intriguing. Bit similar to Monster Hunter 3U on the WiiU. Best MH imo. I loved the fact you can the entire HUD and screen and place it all on the Wii pad. Then it's just you and the monster. Watching it and reacting. Rarely looking down onto the pad for the hp. Just feeling each hunt and knowing when it's time to heal or keep going solely based on the monsters behaviour.

I plan to play this trilogy and know what I feel about the 13 universe because of my Autism, this trilogy might be for me and if so I will have more Final Fantasy games to play so be prepared.

Haven't finished the video yet but: 1) You can change the camera so it stays behind. The second camera options is INFINITELY better, though it doesn't help with certain attacks/spells like Caius casting Chill and such, that still sucks. 2) You can input button presses with a certain rhythm (not frame perfect, but quite hard) to do more damage. It works for spells, attacks, debuffs and maybe more, the game only explains it in the help menu, never brings it up in a tutorial, which sucks, because it can be quite helpful and makes the combat even more fun. EDIT: Some more things now that I watched the vid: 3) There's an extra dungeon that allows you to find most if not all of the "Last Ones" making that quest about extermination WAY more doable and less grindy. 4) You can actually encounter Sazh in several different locations near each of the soul fragments...he's just an NPC and just only has a few lines when you walk by him, but it's a nice detail showing he was still trying and well, more 'screen' time! Not much better really, but yeah.

I'm currently at the 27 minute mark and hope that he mentions it later, but right now it really doesn't seem as if he understood how important timing is in this game. A perfect block, no matter your Guard Defense, will fully negate any damage you would have taken. Guard Defense you lowers your damage taken from regular blocks and if you go below a threshold it becomes a "Guard". And on the exact opposite side a perfect attack can massively increase the damage and stagger effect of your attacks. Lightning Returns is one of the stricter rhythm-based action RPGs as all your survivability and up to 80% of your damage can come from timing. Hell, a perfect Storm Kick does around 4 times the damage a regular one would do, but thats the most extreme example! Basic rule of thumb is this: Perfect moves can never be held buttons, but tapped buttons, either directly before you would have been hit by an attack (like 0,2 seconds or so before) or by hitting the attack button the moment the previous attack hits the target. Both can be seen by the golden shine such moves have. The way the game wants you to play is like a dance in which the stronger opponent dictate the tact and you either follow or die, especially on the superbosses, which just one-shot you on hard if you can't block perfectly. 1:15:00 and he seemed to have missed the Ultimate Lair, which makes killing all Last Ones a breeze as you find 28 of the 31 in there.
