Finally! First 'official' RU-vid recording on our ca 1820 Frenzel Pianoforte. You know the tuning kept me busy for a while, and while it certainly is not perfect yet, it was about time to share this magnificent historical pianoforte with you!
And so the question came which composer would 'serve' for this opening recording. Hmm. Beethoven? Chopin even? Mozart? But then I took my old Breitkopf edition of Clementi sonatas and played the first one, the sonata in C Major, in this book indexed as opus 2 nr 1 (1784). I know there are other Clementi indexes but it isn't clear to me still should save some money to buy the new opera omnia but anyway, it''s an early sonata (1784) that was conceived in the period where Mozart and Clementi met. (I've made a video on their meeting way back in 2015) : • Mozart vs Clementi: T...
Second part of this sonata will follow next week, it's a beautiful rondo, greatly contrasting with this grand first movement.
If you'd like to compare this recording with the one I made on clavichord, here it is: • Muzio Clementi, Sonata...
Hope you enjoy! If you do so, give this video a thumbs up and share it with your friends!

I remember reading, years ago, an art critic who said, "A work of art should imply the standards by which it is to be judged." And that is exactly what you have given us, Mr. Winters. This music, when played in the style you have refined, sounds superb! The clarity, articulation, and care with which you play - and the historical instruments! - make these works seem natural and effortless to listen to. Well done!

I like that sound! You can definitely hear the remnants (if one could say in a figure of speech, "ghost") of the harpsichord sound through the sound of the pianoforte being the bridge to the modern piano. It makes me appreciate the pianoforte even more. Thank you Wim. :)

Yes! This gave me goose pimples! :D The piano sounds absolutely splendid. Beethoven will sound awesome on this instrument. I shared your video with Pat at the Frederick Collection. Maybe this will inspire her husband to restore their 1823 Frenzel.

Beautiful... one can hear how the wood of that pianoforte is enriching the whole picture, plus the sound of the strings is ,,raw" in some way, dont you guys think ? much different than modern pianos . It seems like this pianoforte (as a whole instrument) is ,,vibrating" a lot ! in an elegant way :) and that creats kind of historical uniqueness ! And ofcourse the sonata is a masterpiece.. Your playing technique on that pianoforte is really good, the proper interpretation is there, you absolutely know what you're doing, the trills you've mastered on the clavichord sound awesome as well, plus the right tempo, nice use of dynamics and we have the authentic sound right there ;) Great job ! How about some Mozart sonata on that pianoforte ? Would be nice to hear how it would sound on the historical instrument. Best Regards !

It is rare to hear a forte piano in such good tune. So many of them sound out of tune, which turns off a lot of listeners. This one sounds great and with greater clarity then a modern piano. Bravo.

Dear sir, Would you care to offer some guidance on metronome speeds for Clementi Preludes and Exercises? My daughter is to learn them and I am wondering if some general standards for whole beat are available or should I try to halve my metronome’s markings? Does Chopin have markings perhaps for these? All the best.

There definitely seem to be some instances where the bass strings vibrate against each other, creating an annoying buzzing sound. I have on a few occasions played on a more modern Steinway where that was the case as well. Does anyone know if this is something that is possible to fix?
@AuthenticSound
@AuthenticSound 5 лет назад
it's not because the strings touch each other, it might have to to with the fagott-zugg, that starts to resonate with the vibrations of sound. I will take it off one day to see if it happens again.

I sounds really beautiful, I think it's the ideal sound for classic and more or less early romantic piano music. By the way, what temperament are you using?
@AuthenticSound

Thank you! I'm striving for an equel temperament but let the piano have its own thing (2 centuries of age have their rights :-)

Interesting to hear this period intsrument. I had a good friend many years back, Steve Buchanan, and he built a Stein piano, dressed up in Rococo style and gave concerts. I fell in love with that piano. I have to admit I find Clementi to sound much inferior to Mozart. How I would have loved to see that duel!

Wim, I like the music, I love your dendition but... I totally dislike the tone of this Frenzel. :-/ I find it too skinny and shallow. The digital recording contributes to that for shure. I should listen to it in person to have a better perspective, but I hope the incoming Fritz will sound better!
@fredhoupt4078
@fredhoupt4078 5 лет назад
Not my favourite Clementi. Today I played my way through easy pieces by Stephen Heller. Try out Opus 45, book 1. Lovely short pieces that are like fanciful and melodic exercises. Highly recommend them to those who have played for a few years. Easy sight reading. Wim: you played well but this music doesn't do much for me. Ludwig hangs like a giant shadow over the music.
@Renshen1957
@Renshen1957 5 лет назад
I guess it's a matter of taste, Ludwig called Clementi "The Father of the Piano, " and was Beethoven's favorite composer for piano. In fact Beethoven wanted his nephew Karl to learn Clementi sonatas for his piano instruction. Beethoven was quoted as saying "They who thoroughly study Clementi, at the same time make themselves acquainted with Mozart and other composers; but the converse is not the fact". Schindler wrote, "Among all the masters who have written for pianoforte, Beethoven assigned to Clementi the very foremost rank. He considered his works excellent as studies for practice, for the formation of a pure taste, and as truly beautiful subjects for performance".

It's a new 'thing' the pianoforte, so I can understand your little confusion very well. And the clavichord will not dissapear, so no worry, as there are ca 170 clav recordings on the channel. Don't know if you've seen them all, might be a nice (or weird?) trip back in time ?

For me the clavichord version is far superior. Maybe I'm the only one but I don't like too much the sound of this piano.
@nigellong1460
@nigellong1460 5 лет назад
You are not a lone voice, I too felt the clavichord recording was better. The piano will take months to settle down and adjust to a different climate and tuning and it is probably unfair to be too harsh in judging it. We are also very familiar with Joris’ clavichord and this is so different it will be a bit of a shock to the system.
