Saw both of these when they happened. Great job by the umpire. Why challenge? On the last one he clearly signaled the first baseman's foot was of the base, but the analysts kept focusing on whether the runner beat the throw?

it's worth the risk since the 8th inning starts when Crew Chiefs can review any reviewable play even without challenges

this is just like real estate it's all about LOCAATION, LOCATION, LOCATION...can not tell you how awesome that positioning a first base was, a lot of umpires might be almost perfect position but my guess is most would be a few feet back. The thing is nothing is happening six to ten feet back don't be afraid to get in there!!

The replay camera at 1B was not working which is why Cleveland burned both challenges here. There was also a wrong call at 1B in game 5 where Andres Giminez was safe, but called out. No challenge issued.

Can we get a rules explanation for the play where Rizzo blocked 1B on a pickoff attempt?
@alvinthecat8426
@alvinthecat8426 Год назад
Second this. Nearest I could figure, Rizzo's foot was on the base, runner's hand on Rizzo's foot, safe by osmosis.
@sfan2767
@sfan2767 Год назад
@@alvinthecat8426 I very much agree he should be safe on principle; but that's mainly because I find many of the situations blocking the bag are legal against the spirit of the game.
@cameronhaney3378
@cameronhaney3378 Год назад
I don't know why he wasn't awarded second base. It was type A obstruction with a play being made. It's the same as obstruction during a pickle and the runner gets the next base.
@sfan2767
@sfan2767 Год назад
@@cameronhaney3378 I'd assume the reasoning has something to do with him not trying to get to 2B in any form or fashion. But this is basically why I want the rules review. I'd think he's either out since he didn't touch the base or on 2B due to obstruction, not at 1B due to "shrug". It wasn't a situation where he was on the base and came off due to the defender, which is the only obstruction that doesn't result in a base as far as I know.
@alanhess9306
@alanhess9306 Год назад
@@sfan2767 It doesn't matter if he was trying to advance. The rule is clear, the ball is dead and the runner is awarded the next base.

On the second one, "... call on the play stands ..." He did not say "confirmed". It appears the replay officials were unable to conclusively, definitively see whether foot was pulled when ball meets glove.

@mayramartinez6936 Год назад
I was queationing if there is a standard call definition for replay. When I hear stands I take I that to mean no evidence to overturn. When I hear confim I assume it was evidently correct upon review. Does MLB have definition for what is stands, confirmed and overturned?

Who is teaching U1 to step into foul territory for a routine play at first? I've always been taught to do everything I can to get out of foul territory. Some guys teach 90 degrees, some teach just a couple steps in, but all agree that being in foul territory kills your look at the inside of the bag.
@CloseCallSports
@CloseCallSports Год назад
This is a NEW wave approach that about half a dozen umpires in the MLB are using... A few have stopped doing it as the experiment this season failed miserably. However there are some that noticed it and have implemented it in their games and teaching. I want to note, this is a HIGH level mechanic and should NOT be used in 2-man EVER with the exception of heavy pressure forcing you into foul. Hope this helps... and keep staying in fair!! -tmac

How did Cleveland even think that either call should be challenged, both were obvious on replay.
@oldguydoesstuff120
@oldguydoesstuff120 Год назад
I see it as more of a baseball strategy than completely disagreeing with the call. In the first one, Cleveland is behind but has scored a run earlier in the inning. They're in a good position to keep scoring if it weren't for that play - which was the third out. You've got two challenges - use them. Maybe there's an angle your bench doesn't have that could overturn the call. The manager has to make their challenge decision pretty quickly and often with incomplete information. The second one is a bit harder to justify, but is similar reasoning. Cleveland is still behind and they don't want NY to get a chance to add to their lead. This was the lead off batter, and allowing him to reach base is an advantage to the offense. Again, maybe there is an angle that will allow the call to be overturned. Personally, I would have kept that challenge for possible situations later in the game, but I don't blame Cleveland for giving it a shot. It also stops play for a bit, giving your pitcher a couple of moments to settle down from the disappointment of his defense not getting the out that they probably should have. It's not always about the call being wrong - sometimes its a game strategy.

What I’m wondering is why the call only “stands” on the second one. Looked definitive to me.
@markeschen
@markeschen Год назад
Was probably the time crunch. Decision to challenge needs to be relayed to the ump in under 20 seconds. They saw the ball beat the runner and didn't have time to focus on the slow motion replay of on/of the bag, so they probably figured it was worth the shot.
