I LOVE these teachable moments. I watch them over and over and over. And you know what... paid off last night. Got amazing praise from my partner on my positioning. Had some crazy play where there was a throw home and the batter-runner trying to stretch the single into a "double" after the play at the plate. (2 man system) I followed the play similar to a steal, ended up near the cutout, opened up, my instincts literally took over and I rotated to behind the runner and ended up making the call from the "outside" of a direct line between 1st and 2nd. I was about 6 feet away from the play. Dude did a "Javy Baez" slide and I called him safe. No clue how he didnt get tagged... but he didnt. I always look forward to seeing these teachable moments and I love them. Keep them coming.

Yeah, this one is completely inconclusive to me one way or the other. The 1st base Umpire would have the best eyes for this play so if anything this is a lesson for the Replay Umpires to say Inconclusive, Call Stands.

Rookie HS umpire here, the ball was hit to deep short stop/3B territory. I’ve been trying to adjust my angle to take 6-8 steps in an arc toward 3B on those calls at first and following the ball to the mit. Do you think if this umpire would have taken an angle like that rather than be tight on the foul line, it would have been easier to be in the key hole for this wacker or no? Thanks!
@jacobpeterson3604
@jacobpeterson3604 3 года назад
@@davej3781 Thanks! My thinking was that F3 would be turning his body more toward 3B, so if I’m more arched with him I can still see the pulled foot. Even though the play might open up to me if I was that flat, overcommitting to that flat of an angle would prompt me to call him out! And, it would be tough on my partner with a runner on 3rd to help me with a swipe tag situation like this… interesting!

Call could have gone either way. No matter what he called, replay would not have overturned it. Cheers to Hallion for his hustle and making a definitive call. By the way, Ian Moran was the 1st baseman, not Ben Gamel.

The runner gets up and rounds first. Couldn't the defense tag him, and would that still be considered a tag play, negating the run score?
@alanhess9306
@alanhess9306 10 месяцев назад
Once the runner is called safe at first base it becomes a "time play". If R3 touches the plate before the tag, the run counts.

In the 2-Umpire system, I don't know how you could correctly call this one.
@Rabbi_D
@Rabbi_D 3 года назад
Good question -- the base umpire would be positioned between the mound and shortstop (runner on third), so would be looking toward first. Not sure what the line of sight from that angle is. Bright side for that umpire, 2-umpire leagues don't have replays, so no matter what the call is, it's going to stand.

@XXelpollodiabloXX
@XXelpollodiabloXX 3 года назад
There is no way replay could see something that would lead them to overturn. It's just not clear enough from the angles of the video. It has to be really clear and convincing to overturn a call. Tom was in a direct line from base to tag attempt, so he could see if there was daylight when the hand touched the bag. It was super close, but he was right on top of it, and I'll trust him over my eyes any day.
