Blended Learning When I began this assignment I was unfamiliar with the term blended learning. I found the video I linked to and loved that it gave some specific examples of exactly what blended learning is and is not. The examples of what blended learning is not were key in making blended learning clear for me. I liked the examples of the different models of blended learning that could be used. Education has evolved in recent years but I think most of us have a ways to go to be a true 21st century classroom. A blended learning model appears to be just what we need to fully meet all of the common core standards to help our students become college and career ready (ISTE -T2(a). I liked that in the video she stressed the importance of being flexible. Many times when a new model is started we try to make the new fit our current processes. Being totally willing to put 100% into a new process is key to it working. The other point the speaker made was that in order to truly blended a district or school must be committed to blending. This is the part I think is overlooked with many new initiatives. Is there enough bandwidth to support that many students on the computers at one time? Are there enough computers? Can the computers be repaired in a timely manner? What teacher training would need to be provided? The digital tools and devices that are provided to learners are essential to blended learning. Can the district or school afford to purchase the devices needed? Without commitment blended learning is sure to fail. I think blended learning could be model of future classrooms. It seems like a model that would work well to individualize instruction and meet kids where they are academically (ISTE - T2(c). I linked to another video in my assignment of a school district that is very close to my district that is using blended learning. It made the possibility of blended learning being a process that could really work seems more real knowing that people near me are currently seeing success with this model.
As I'm transforming a literature class to a blended learning model, this video encouraged the daring to make the steps into encouraging the students to build collaborative relationships for future success, and encouraging me to know this will help them grow even more than the expectations I've had for them in the past.
AEP800 I selected this video because I like the blend of honesty and reality regarding blending learning. I teach at a school that uses a lot of technology and the students are losing interest. Our students are in a lab settings for 1-2 class periods a day doing Lexia or Mathia and they are bored!!!!! As Markoff states in this TED Talk, "we can't hand them a computer and say educate yourself." Students need teachers who come up with creative and engaging lessons that have the students interacting with technology and each other. I also agree with Markoff that schools need to train their teachers on new learning strategies that blend technology, inquiry, discussion and student interactions. With great lessons and student to teacher and student to student interactions the blended learn concept becomes engaging and not a boring computer lab. Overall, I believe blending learning has the potential to change the way students learn by giving them the opportunity to learn at their own pace and creating an individualized educational experience.
This video did a good job explaining the benefits of blended learning. I also liked how she explained some of the steps when beginning to setup this type of learning environment. Overall, this made me really begin to wonder and want to explore how more of this type of learning environment could and would work at my school.
