Great video, I'm a 3rd year apprentice and this concept took me a while to fully grasp.

Great videos. Section 250 of the NEC seems to be the most challenging and your videos sum it up really well. Passing this info on to apprentices, for sure.

I would go to ground anyway since the utility grounded the neutral right on the transformer . But you can't rely on it so code ask to add one localy Maybe you should explain why we need a ground In the old days system was undgrouded Floating system has is advantage and disadvantage And you draw you ground casing wire up the the neutral that is confusing, the neutral is suppose to be grounded in one point, you not suppose to use the neutral to link to the ground like you did in the drawing , i know you don't do it in real life .... but it's missleading ..you just do that kinda of hack in a old house with no ground wire ...oups

hey steven , thanks for the explanation... question though if the the wire from the transformer has to loop and is not lost, why are downed lines that are cut and open ended soo dangerous then since that broken hot wire is going to "nothingness" as you said. curious let me know thanks!

Using the guide wire as a ground conductor would most certainly violate a rule in the NEC. This is only allowed because utilities are not subject to the NEC and are allowed to develop their own standards.

i don't think the quality if the connection at the bottom would be good for a long time, but there is also a ground that run with the power line below the transformer , so the sum of it probably good

Me again, Steve, you say at the beginning of the video of the transformer is not hooked to the ground and then at the end of the video you explain that it is Connected to the ground So, which is it? I’m sure you’ll make me a video lol.

This point is definitely confusing but I think he's just saying the transformer itself does not provide a ground for the circuit, but it is instead provided by the ground rods bonded to neutrals. Without ground bonded neutrals I believe the outputs would be isolated from ground unless the neutral is bonded to the case and the case itself is grounded but I'm not certain

The white board is vague on where the ground wire is connected to the transformer. It's connected to the center tap of the xformer secondary winding plus to the ground side of the xformer primary winding. Notice there is only ONE hot wire feeding the primary winding.

Thank you for explaining this. Grounding has always been explained like some magical current sink. Balance of potential is far more plausible and understandable. That being said from my own area of expertise please get a better tripod. The camera shake is kind of nauseating.

I would just like to clarify something in my own brain. This is the first video I've ever seen that actually made me understand why the main panel is bonded but the sub panels aren't. If I took a fan and separated the two leads of the power cord and I stuck one on a grounding rod and then touched the other one to one of the hot lugs on the transformer correct? Is that what you mean by no usable electricity can flow from the hot taps to ground?

Yes the fan would only work if the dirt and soil was conductive enough to complete a circuit thru the earth to a ground rod and back up to the transformer. I have a video where I connect a 120v straight to a ground rod. Without the ground rod being bonded to any neutral. I can tag you

@Stevenj120volts.. Thanks for the video. Appreciate your attention towards your viewers. But few suggestions to improve your videos- speak little slow and clear as your audience is international they will not get your accent always. Show or point towards things in video properly.... i.e. when you were showing wires in transformer i couldn't get it. But anyways... Your method is good no issue. I understand it. Actually in my shorts comment i didn't give it properly and you got confused and angry on me. But no issue i understand the concept no issue.
