Clickable, Interactive, Hyperlinked Table of Contents 

I just wanted to let you know that you're my hero today. I recently took up a job to work from home by writing EBooks & this clickable table of contents task is essential for kindle books. I had just switched over to a Mac from an ancient old laptop that had word 2007 on it so everything was a different world to me it seemed like. I spent hours trying to figure it out myself & looking at RU-vid videos that made it seem simple but it wasn't what I was required to do. As a last attempt, I found your video & it DID make it seem simple & still be what I needed to be done. I felt like an idiot once i realized what step I was missing. THANK YOU. I got my book turned in on time today because of your video. You rock.

Thank you for this. I often need to hyperlink chapter headings to a Table of Contents and every time I hunt for your tutorial because Ive forgotten. So glad you're out there providing this info

Thanks for this. I've been breaking my head over this problem. Unfortunately, my word version is different than yours but I found my way around it. I'm going to try it now on 3 books I have finished and have not published because I had not figured out how to make the TOC clickable. I spent 3 hours chatting with the help desk on Microsoft Word the other day and they could not figure it out either! That means you did a great job!

This was exactly what I needed. I've been trying to figure out hyperlinks for a couple of days now and thought I would go nuts. I have Microsoft 14, so in the hyperlink window, I had to have the document link in the top "link to" window and I had to type the name of the bookmark in the bottom "Anchor" window before the "locate" button would work. Also, my fake practice book had sections at the back titled Author's Notes and About the Author. When I tried to type those words in without spaces in the bookmark window, the program wouldn't allow it. So I just called them Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 respectively and it worked fine. There's actually a slightly easier way. At least in my Word for Mac, I don't have to create the bookmark for each hyperlink, because they already exist. If you hit Hyperlink (Cmd-K) and choose the Document tab, click "Locate," then choose the "Heading" dropdown. All the headings I've set as style Heading 1, 2, or 3 are listed here. So I just choose those and don't have to go to the trouble of making a bookmark for each. I have Mac Word 2011, so I don't know if that makes a difference. :)

Buck, excellent video. I use a Dell at work but I own a Mac at home. I did the same, surfed through tons of videos and couldn't find the simple way to do it. Thanks again! Only thing i'm trying to figure out now, is if you did everything like you just did, and then added let's say "Chapter 4," and then you went to "Update Table, and selected "Update Entire Table," then it does just that, and you see Chapter 4 at the top in your table. However, it erases all the hyperlinks you've just created. I'm sure there's a way to fix it. Loved the video and yes you sound like a country superstar.

Hi Buck, great video very informative! Two questions: 1. How did you get that view setting to come up where you have the left column to come of page images? 1a. As an extension of the above question, do you know how to setup that left column, but have each page image in that left column represent a page that has one of the unique bookmarks we setup? When I right click on the TOC to automatically update the entire table, the hyperlinks gone... Do you have any insight to it? Does anyone come across the same situation?

Thank you for that lesson. NEED of ADVICE. I have searched for something similar that is easy to do on a pc but I have a mac. I must do the same as above BUT I NEED to link a toc to outside documents THAT ARE IN SEPARATE FOLDERS, I can link with individual documents but takes too long to each one. REASON FOR THIS IS it must all be in a flash drive, to hand in for finals by 12th May, for my law resources assignment. This means stick in flash drive, make toc, start linking with each doc on desk top, okay. but it will take weeks to do each doc separately. With the PC you can do it by folder of each batch of resources. (I heard in order to link you must do it in the flash stick file mode). I want to link toc to folders on my desk top instead of individual documents. When I do that All my docs open up, (doesnt do that on PC0 If I drag folder to the flash drive and then attempt to do it in flash drive mode it will not take. Perhaps there is something else I need to select similar to your demonstration. nybody? thanks to all. Glad I stumbled across this Buck.

you can make headings and sub headings

When I export the file as a PDF it doesn't work, do you know how to fix the problem?

I have a small doubt ,i have tried this in word 2016 and still it is asking to hold control and click on the heading .But if i convert the word document to PDF doc it is working. can anyone please help me how to create a click table in word 2016. Thanks in advance.
