Thank you for these wonderful videos! I am beginning my research into clicker training and this really helps a lot. I love the idea of a reverse round pen! Many great ideas here and I hope to implement them. I did a bit of clicker training today with simple commands and also for the mounting block. I loved it! I feel she is much more relaxed with using the +R training. Thanks again🙏🏻🐴

Another thing that I learned: fly spray! 😂 my horse never focuses if there are too many flies! Well... I wouldn't also.

Great video to explain the common tools in R+ training. I also use protected contact when working with horses that are fearful around people and to show me comers to R+ that they don't need to apply subtle (often unconscious) pressure to the horse on order to teach a behaviour. I've book marked this video to send a link to my clients. Thank you

I actually rambled on for much longer about the protected contact but decided to cut it off there and save the rest for a future video where I talk more about horses with fears around people etc. So absolutely! 100% agree and use it for the same. Glad you liked the video and it's useful for you! :)

Do you have any video series’s of each step of training ?
@TheWillingEquine
@TheWillingEquine 5 лет назад
I have a video series of going through a lot of the basic training with my filly River, and some step by step of certain behaviors, but I do not have a full training course at this time no

I use a clicker without a treat with my dog I trained it by giving a treat after the click. Could you do the same with horses?
@TheWillingEquine
@TheWillingEquine 2 года назад
Yes! But I highly recommend seeking out an equine professional R+/clicker trainer as there are some adjustments that need to be made between dog and horse training with clicker training based on their species specific needs. The principles and learning theory are the same though!

Where do you get your mats? great video

I know this is an old comment, but I figured I’d follow up. The balance mat is linked in the comments. Are you asking about the stationary mat? It’s just a cheap door mat from like Home Depot or something similar

If we use cones to stand at etc … how can I use them in horse agility to go around? Thanks
@TheWillingEquine
@TheWillingEquine 11 месяцев назад
If you need them for horse agility I might use something else as a target. I have a client who used blocks, and another who used mats for the feet to target rather to than the nose.
@TheWillingEquine
@TheWillingEquine 11 месяцев назад
Making sure have the cone targeting on stimulus control is important too.

What is the point of training the horse to go to a fixed target? is it used as a mobile mark for where you want the horse to stand?
@TheWillingEquine
@TheWillingEquine 5 лет назад
Theres a lot of things you can do with teaching a horse to target. If you watch some of my videos on Instagram or RU-vid you can see some ideas :) Facebook too

When/ how or why do you stop clicker training?
@TheWillingEquine
@TheWillingEquine 14 дней назад
You don't? That's similar to asking "when/how do you stop pressure and release training". If that's what you're asking, then the answer is you wouldn't.

I have a very timid mini mare and loud noises scare her. What, in your experience, is the quietest clicker? I talk to my ponies a lot, so I want to use a clicker as the signal and not my voice. I have it narrowed down to the one you show in this video, the style that Karen Pryor sells, and the purple one that's worn as a ring.
@TheWillingEquine
@TheWillingEquine 5 лет назад
I haven't used the ring one but the one in this video is my preferred and the "dullest" sound. Which is better when dealing with easily startled horses. You can also put it in a sock or your pocket to dull the sound further
@classicambo9781
@classicambo9781 3 года назад
I know this was a year ago but for anyone else reading, I used my own tongue click. It was made at the front of my mouth and quite dull and quiet. It was also different from the corner/back of mouth series of clicks that lots of people use to call horses up from paddocks etc and they always knew the difference. Both dogs and horses I should add.

I LOVE THE IDEA OF CLICKER TRAINING, BUT AT WHAT POINT DO YOU STOP CARRYING AROUND TREATS IN A POUCH??

When they've learned the behavior on a varied reinforcement schedule. The clicker/reward isn't a bribe unless you turn it into one.

How do you know if or when your horse has anxiety about food?
@TheWillingEquine
@TheWillingEquine 5 лет назад
Any kind of stress behaviors like ears back, "stalking you" and not leaving you alone when you have food on you, biting, kicking, "mare face"/sour face, pawing, not standing still.. anything like that :)
