EXACTLY!! I do too! And I appreciate seeing the trainer and or puppy make mistakes so that I can know that my mistakes or my puppy's mistakes is okay too. It keeps me from getting discouraged and in the process we make great progress and I'm learning so much!

We taught our dog to lay on a mat as well and did so very early on (maybe 4-5 months old or so?). Something else we started doing about a month or 2 ago (dog is now 1.25 yrs old) is reinforcing natural settles by just waiting for moments where she lays down (can be anywhere, floor, couch, w/e) we just walk up, place a treat in front of them and walk away. No clicker, no marker outside of an occasional calm "good girl", just place it in front of them. Been working wonders at encouraging our energetic havanese to choose to calm down when she's tired as opposed to getting tired and subsequently getting fussy like a toddler that needs a nap.
In 3 days I taught my 8 week old Shepard/pitbull mix to overcome his separation anxiety and enjoy resting in his crate. Now I need to manage his energy during the day. This video looks incredibly helpful. Thanks!
I used this technique to train the "Get on Your Bed" command. It worked awesome!! The only trouble I had was petting my pup after she was on the bed, she bites & nips. We have to do the hold on the collar & treat exercise & the Settle Position A LOT, like constantly. I really love all the Trainers McCann has in the videos, it gives different personalities, ages of trainers & different settings. I truly appreciate the work, time, the creativity, and money that goes into providing these helpful videos as well.
I keep doing this with my pup when we’re in the room and I’m doing it with her crate. It really gets her mind off whatever anxiety she has and makes her focus like ohh I’m supposed to relax now.
I have a black lab collie puppy and let me tell you by the end of this video he actually laid down on his own and took a nap. THANK YOU!! before everyone just said make sure he has lots of activities. When he runs our 5 acres at least 3 to 4 times a day and is still jumping all over the place inside. I love this. Thanks a million. Just tried it for the first time with my 11 month old giant schnoodle who was running rampant this morning. Took a few minutes and now he won't come out his crate even for his favourite toy. I love that it's his choice and no luring is involved. Brilliant !! I’ve had them constantly since in Jr High in 1980 except for a few short years in the Army and they definitely have energy. My wife and I thought it would be good to have two puppies at the same time that could help keep each other entertained, so we have two 11 month olds born a day apart, my Border Collie and her Great Dane, but it’s more like the velociraptors scenes in Jurassic Park. They’re an adventure that force us to stay a little younger than we might be otherwise. And oh what an adventure! LOL!

We're still working on it. 😊 My advice - try to conduct several short sessions a day everyday rather than 1 hour long training 1 time a week. Spaced repetition is a way better solution, at least for my dog and me. Fingers crossed for your success! :)
Once you’ve had one, that’s it. I saved for and bought my first Border Collie when in Junior High in 1980 and have had one or more ever since except my few short years in the Army. Currently have an 11 month old, my first smooth coat Border Collie. He’s beautiful and hope we have a little less shedding to keep up with. We’ll see, but he’s definitely another smart sweetie!

Great advice again guys ! This is one of those essential "life skills" I teach every client. I add a cue - "easy" and proof it like any other training exercise. Having the ability to ask for relaxation on cue is a game changer for most owners. Some dogs need lots of massage and other relaxation techniques before they can access true relaxation - just like teaching anything new, it takes patience and practice to get good at it.
Handling is such an important part of that, Tesla Nick! It’s so nice to have a dog that is comfortable with someone having their hands on them. There will be so many times that they will need to be handled (by a vet, groomer, nail trimming etc.) over their lives. Making that a less stressful experience and teaching them relax is quite helpful. Thanks for watching ~Ken
My 10 week old puppy has the zoomies hard!! It’s impossible to calm her down and is easy to get frustrated with her…I will try this method today but using her crate to build up her safe zone trust with it. Thankyou for the clear instructions.
I’m picking up my new puppy in under a month and this was really helpful! Even though, from pictures and videos - as well as being theirs personally - the puppy I’m getting seems to be much more relaxed in comparison to his siblings😁 but this is REALLY helpful as it’s training from scratch and not from a puppy who already gets the gist 😄
I got the most mellow one of the litter (just sat at door waiting for mom while others dug around and ceied) but at home he is still just like this puppy.
I was wrong😂 he is the happiest, most playful and lively boy I’ve ever had🥰 couldn’t have imagined a better family member - he is 1yr and 5 months old and still as lovely as the first day I met and held him❤️
We just adopted a special needs Border Collie mix puppy. When she was about three months, her previous owners accidentally ran over her, and broke her pelvis and shattered her femur. She’s currently almost 7-months-old, and she seems super smart! Do you have any suggestions for building strength in her legs and core? She seems to want to do all the tricks the other dog is able to do, but because of her bad leg, she doesn’t have the strength or confidence to do them, yet.
Just as with special needs humans, build a foundation upon her strengths, not her weaknesses. What can she do well? Reward it if she does it. Can she sit? If so, sitting and getting up both, can be rewarded with a treat. My old Aussie had bad hips, but we would exercise those hips with her sitting for a treat and then getting up to take the treat. We would do about 5 reps of these three times a day. Walking is a great way to build strength in the legs and core. We would massage her hips and legs. She may only want to walk at her own pace and take frequent breaks at first but work with it. Reward her for what she can do. She will build strength to do more as time goes on. Challenge her (within reason and don't push too hard) to do more. Don't treat her like a cripple but do respect her limitations. Dogs with disabilities can do amazing things and do want to please their people. Love her, treat her like a dog (be her leader), have great expectations of her, do not punish her for what she cannot do, and you might be surprised what she will do in the future.
Hi! First, let me say I love your channel, Subscribed, hit the bell, etc. So I have a Real Challenge. Sooo... my puppy had feeding/stomach issues from 8 weeks. He was a wriggling ball of baby fluff on top, skin and bones on bottom. If I offered treats For Anything, they caused Intense stomach upset/vomiting. Regardless of the Kind of treats used. He Flat Out Refused All Kibble. Refused to eat more than once a day from the word Go. The Only 2 times in the past 2 years that he actually kinda wanted it, was because another dog was there. And after 30 seconds of novelty, he'd walk away from the treat and let the other dog eat it. The next time I tried immediately afterward, he blew it off all together. The vet said to forget about treats... and concentrate on just finding a food he could digest, AND would eat. Even if it was only once a day. I'd Love to see you do this with a puppy Without Any Food rewards. No One Seems To Do Training Without Food Ever being in the picture. When I used play he ignored the toy (never been a fan, could care less), and praise, with Exuberant "Jackpot Treats" type praise just wound him up (like Intense play and tickling a child Right before bed time). The Second I jackpot treated with affection he completely lost it and would run off. We just Couldn't get him to eat OR Play And affection/praise? Yeah, that didn't work either. His body rejected Every food we tried and he stayed Painfully Skinny. He woul eat Just Enough to stay alive. He also vomited Every Day. Our Vet diagnosed him with GI Reflux (GERD). So, here's My question. If food and play don't Work for your dog, ALL you have left is praise. And I have yet to see how to "Jackpot" with praise Without re-energizing and winding the puppy up works. Even here, on this channel it's like... oh, your dog Flat Out Refuses treats? Well give him treats then change his reward system. 😳 (did I mention treats and play weren't working?). It sets him up to fail, and get Very confused. All the RU-vid trainers and professionals are like... treats, treats, treats... clicker treat, clicker treat... play, play, play. Ugh! Uh, yeah. Umm... my dog Doesn't DO Any of that. It's Frustrating, and our training has slowed to a crawl. He's 2 years old now, and WAY Behind other 2 year old dogs in training and maturity. Other "professional trainers" are baffled. Any suggestions? Because after 2 Years of this I am Beyond frustrated.

I have an assistance dog that comes to school with me so she has to settle for multiple hours a day (she gets a run round outside aswell at least one a day sometimes twice just to relax a bit) but because of covid we’ve not been at school so she’s not been having to settle as much so we’re going to do some things like this with her to work on her settle and start acting as if it was a school day so I lay out my clothes she gets then for me in the morning then she gets her gear on and I put her in the car for a little bit then get her out and go back in the house and get her to settle at the table so she’s ready for when we go back to school

I know it’s normal since he’s teething & I’ve tried redirecting with chew toys but he’ll lose interest in the toy and go for the hand that’s offering the toy. He’s also pretty rough with kids. He’ll growl and bite pretty hard. Thank you!

I have a 15 weeks old Chow that goes from sweet little loving angel to a monster with attack mode within a minute or 2 after morning greeting. We had a trainer over when she was 8 weeks and still having issue with her. I had 2 male Chows before and both were nothing like her. I don't know if this is a female thing, puppies crazies, or her personality/aggression. She bites and get into everything when she is in that mode.

Ive had dogs and looked up videos but this company is insanely good at instructing and they aren’t annoying. A lot of dog trainers are annoying. They are nice people but they are obnoxious to watch. Maybe it’s just me though.
This is great, teach your puppy with love and treats. We have changed the way we are training our Border Collie pup after seeing this. Would like to know what treats you are using as you must get through tons of them?
Personally I use my puppys kibble and have her do this to earn her meals rather than using actual treats. You'll have loads to use then without worrying about weight gain.
I have a 2 year old dog that I just adopted a year ago will this still work on him? He especially gets hyper and excited and jumps on guests when they come (little kids get him super excited and happy and jump) will this also work or do you have any tips?
I gotta say guys. I am impressed. Started this training with our bullmastiff puppy, and the results were pretty damn good. And pretty quick. Most things take her longer to learn and I chalked it up to being a stubborn Bullmastiff but she took to this excercise right away. Thanks for a great video

This is good! Could you do a follow-up one to train a puppy not to chew on their bed? I had a dog that I could literally not give a dog bed without her shredding it if I wasn't watching. She had plenty of chew toys, and yet destroyed a really nice bed I gave her. I want to be able to trust my next dog not to tear up its bed if there is a training method for that.

Thanks for this just a question have you got any videos on how to keep a older puppy calm around cats and babies. Our pup is a rescue. But she’s big and very strong. And she’s around a year. We’ve got a cat. We’ve had our puppy now for about 7 weeks. She also jumps.
This technique has worked extremely well, for the most part, but I'm going wrong somewhere. My puppy gets too jazzed up about 'the game.' She's learned she's rewarded for being on her mat but there's very little settling or calming down.
Take all the fun away and no treats. When he/she has calmed down and is tired continue the session? Try to find a special treat that your puppy is way more interested in. The treat is a way of saying: this is good, this gives comfort, this is better than any other stimulus right now. Try to find a toy that he really likes instead of the bed. Only introduce the toy when he figured out the: "when I do this I get this" effect. Good luck!
My puppy was doing that as the bed was new and exciting. I wrapped it up with an old bedsheet and made it boring. So she slept in that instead of chewing and playing with it.
@@torstensigulsson4579 I have made DIY cooling pads at home. I put that under her bedsheet. Now whenever I do that she just runs to her bed and relaxes off to sleep. Maybe that will work better for ur puppy too. I have a 4 months old female lab named Misty

@@kerosene9579 Don’t give up! Pups are like a baby and have to be able to develop and go through their phases just like we have. They’re banking on you being the good parent that will help them grow through it and you’ll be rewarded with the most loyalty you’ll ever experience. That’s the reason they’re known as man’s (person’s) best friend.
Thanks for the video! I’m trying to get my 13 week Australian shepherd pup to settle down outside of his cage. The cage calms him right down, but I don’t want him to view the cage as a punishment for getting too wild. He needs to eventually learn to be calm in the house. I was told to get him really tired before training, but I can play all day with him and he won’t even want to lay down lol. Hopefully this will help him realize that life isn’t always hoopty!

Maybe with a trickle of treats by rewarding calm behavior in staying in bed--like the instructor shows. And avoiding giving treats when they stray from bed
my BC is able to calm down with direction and redirection except 1st thing in the morning after she comes in. After all night in the crate she really can not contain her excitement . The redirect of ( after giving her my compete action for a couple minutes) of holding her favorite toy while she chews it for a minute then I can get her to lay down and let me have my coffee. I think we need to look at context , age etc. for example I do not let people who reward ( unintentionally or otherwise) my young BC jumping or mouthing, I put her up or out, its not her fault when she's rewarded. She's very well mannered now with people who cooperate with ignoring unwanted behavior.
Looks like a great lesson. Maybe I should've known this when my BC was a puppy. Maybe I would avoid her broken herding behaviour then. My dog is crazy about other pet's and human's cooperation. Im working on this problem but its hard to keep her interest 100% of time when there's another couple (human and pet) close to her. But how could I know. I hope I'll make less mistakes with the next BC when I decide to get one more.

It would be nice to see RU-vid Dogg trainers work with a breed other than a border collie. There super smart. I have a Pitbull and find that he doesn’t settle down no matter what I do.
If this works on a BC, it should work with any dog. They may be smart, but they cannot calm down on their own. They're bred for stamina and working and don't relax because of it.
Katie Brisse very true, I have a 10th month old Aussie, similar to borders but not quite on the same level. She has trouble relaxing out of her crate because she’s always ready to go

That's normal and natural border collie behavior. You don't want to discourage it. Instead, try to refocus that energy on a toy or game. They need their brains worked as much as their bodies.

It's funny how much I've grown as a puppy owner in a couple of weeks. When I posted this I had her just a couple of weeks and was kind of overwhelmed but now we are a pretty good team. The issue back then was that I did way to much with her and she was overwrought and couldn't get rest.
@@gregorstr8393 yes, they can get over-stimulated. So long as they are getting enough exercise, training, and play time, a little time out can help them calm down.

I've been doing this and similar training with my dog and he's got much better but he yawns A LOT and seems very stressed. I'm not scolding or shouting, I'm trying to make it a calm and pleasant environment to just respect personal space a little more and generally more respectful around me and especially visitors. He just doesn't seem to like it even though he will calm down he is clearly quietly stressed and just waiting for his chance to go crazy again.
our bordrr collie lab mix turned soo crazy near the end of her first day with us. lol i hope this works cause now it’s pretty harmless but if u dont teach her boundaries she won’t unlearn it when shes much stronger and bigger. she is almost 8 weeks!
