Use this with my dogs and it works beautifully. Positive progression works for all creatures, even humans. my friend with MS and elderly too a stallion that was wild and ready to be destroyed and taught him clicker training. It went so well he is now a champion at listening and no one can believe it is the same horse. He freely gives as he wants to, these other pushy methods they tried on him and he nearly killed 2 men. Clicker works, keep sharing.

To be honest I don't care if my horse did it just for treats,I would rather train this way than hurt my horse.(I have to treat often when grooming him,hes very frigidity so treats help him not to constantly want to play with me when he really needs to be groomed) but awesome video!

I really like your video's, just subscribed. I recently became interested in clicker training for dogs, and it seemed wrong that while this works so well with dogs, horse trainers still use whips and such.

+Dion7 Thank for subscribing. Clicker training is becoming huge in dog training and we can only hope it follows for horses but we have a long way to go unfortunately.

I understand what you are saying about not using a whip or whatever to train your horse. I respect that, that is not natural for horses. But you do need to discipline horses. Horses are not all about being buddies. Another horse friends or not would pin their ears, bite, scream, etc. Horses prefer to live knowing what they can and can't do. As a human if your horse decided it was having a bad day or it didn't want you near its food or whatever, it would pin its ears or maybe try to strike or bite you. Because you are doing something it doesn't want you to do. As a human you DONT BEAT IT but you need to get on to it. It needs to understand how to act around people because you are not a horse, you are far smaller and weaker than them. Any relationship with a horse where you are not the dominant one over everything is dangerous. Because as much as you may think horses are all friends, they still have order. A pop on the butt or the threat of it is just like a horse threatening to bite, or like a mare teaching its foal to behave. Make sure your horse is not afraid of the whip. If you are punishing your horse and it is afraid of the whip, you are doing it WRONG!

Thanks for your comment. Several things: - "You do need to discipline horses" No you don't. I don't discipline my horses or my clients horses and there is nothing wrong with them. I rather use humane, efficient technique rather than old fashion ways that have been scientifically proven to have many drawbacks. - You are not a horse, your horse doesn't see you as a horse. - But if you insist, most free ranging/feral equine to equine interactions are not agonistic. (You may see a lot of agonistic behaviour in domestic horses due to inappropriate management) Meanwhile traditional and natural horsemanship methods nearly exclusively include agonistic interactions through the use of aversives. This is not only unethical, unnecessary but also very unnatural. - Positive punishment, which is the practice of adding an aversive to reduce the odds of a behaviour occurring (aka probably what you mean under the euphemism "discipline") has been proven to increase risk of aggression. - I highly recommend you watch our other videos to learn how we deal with unwanted behaviours in a humane, effective and safer manner. We also have a video on dominance and leadership that you should be interested in. Oh and also the whip video, because you don't seem to know about conditioned aversive stimuli.

Thank you for replying. I will watch more videos, and maybe that will help me to understand, but I guess I just don't understand how this way of training would work for all horses. Yes if you have a calm, mellow, cooperative horse, this would work fine. But what if your horse is aggressive or pushy? I also don't think horses are above punishment. By punishment I am not talking about anything worse than what a horse would do to another horse. I have seen people beat horses and it makes me sick. But just like a parent would threaten to take away your phone, or threaten to give you a spanking, I guess I just don't see how the threat of a pop(and I mean pop, not whip or beat) or even a pop is any different. I don't see why horses are above being punished. Dogs, cats, humans, everything else is taught this way, why not horses. I do believe in positive reinforcement. If they do something good, praise them, if they do something bad, get on to them. Make sure they know that is not aloud. That seems a lot easier than what you are doing.(No offence.)

Larry McCraw that’s like saying “clicker training made my pet lion kill me” instead of saying “keeping this _wild_ animal inappropriately got me killed” lol plus really you would have a way harder time disciplining a wild animal, it isn’t domesticated for human tolerance.

He is only doing it for treats. just because you can take the treat away he is still doing for the food. This is a fact. not a myth, Any real horse behaviorist trainer can tell you this. Horses are prey animals they can be trained with preditor animal methods but the end result for the horse is not the same. In one method the horse is offering a behavior for food the other method the horse is offering the behavior because it looks to you fo leadership and wants to pls you because you keep the horse safe. Horses are animals that rely on a leader for everything when they eat, where they go, who they stand by, and how close they can stand by you, there is a lot to explain but trust me, real horsemen like RyanRose will have a much better horse and relationship with the horse in the end that this lady ever could. Oh, a chimp or monkey is a predator animal, not a prey animal they do not tain the same, you can use the same methods but the mindset is totally different. No yoru house does not see you as the safe place it sees you as the food bank and it will stay with the food bank. Again this is not a good horse training method it will work but the outcome is not the same. A good horseman to watch is Ryan Rose

Hi, i was wondering how you atart liberty with a horsw?
@fairhorsemanship
@fairhorsemanship 9 лет назад
Heather Currell It depend if I am working with a rescue or a horse that is well adjusted. If the horse is happy and healthy I start by teaching him targeting and the rules of the game at liberty. Liberty is not that big pot at the end of the rainbow (It's a teaching tool!) if it is then it's probably because the trainer use a lot of aversive and therefore cannot convince the horse to work with him at liberty from the very first day. I have an entire video dedicated to liberty, look for "Liberty in Fairhorsemanship" on my channel. Also do not hesitate to email me if you would be interested in becoming a student, I have a long distance course available :)
