The ruins of the Cliff Mine tell the story of the Keweenaw's first profitable copper mine in the 19th Century. Its brief success spurred the nation's first mineral rush attracting prospectors from across the world. Today, the Cliff Mine's legacy can be experienced as visitors explore informal trails among the mine's ruins, cemetery, and more.

I like how this place is open to the public instead of closed off just because someone might get hurt.

My paternal grandparents immigrated from England to work in the copper mines in the 1800’s in the Keweenaw. When mining died out grandfather applied to the coastguard. They were packed up to go back to England on the next ship. The day before they were to leave for England his coastguard papers arrived. They unpacked and the rest is history. Grandfather retired as captain at the Grand Marais Michigan coastguard station. Grandfather and grandmother had four children in Grand Marais, my father was one of them.

"Gog" and "Magog" were the names given to two large intertwined silver and copper masses found at Cliff Mine in the 1840s.

I got very interested in the area in the late 1970's/ early 1980's. We visited Cliff Mine, and also ghost towns like Mandan and Central. Important history. Sean, if you are interested in details about Pequaming I have a few,,, as a Detroiter I have followed Ford closely.

I found the Cliff mine in 1982. There was still the graves of Capt Jennings and his daughter hidden by some overgrown trees. I was also able to drive my Jeep to the top .

I live in the bruce peninsula between lake Huron and Georgian Bay. The towns from the 1850s are still here, haven't grown much, but there are a few ruins scattered about, bit nothing like that!

My father was born in Calumet and kept a house in Laurium all his life for spending the summers in the UP. When I would visit we would take his Honda 90s all over and this was one of the places we would visit. We would get Toni's pasties on Kearsarge and Chocolate milk and take our time eating and enjoying the view.

You mention one cemetery, but not the OTHER cemetery. The one next to the pond slightly up the hill. It's older than the catholic cemetery

I am writing about a young boy growing up in the UP, his father working in one of the copper mines... problem: I know there must be ship wrecks in the keweenaw area, can't find much, also not finding much information about day to day life in a copper mine...can any one give any guidance?

There is a Shipwreck Park in the water of Lake Superior off Esrey Park, but both points of interest would be best fielded with the Keweenaw National Park Service! The rangers there are very communicative through social media if you have any questions!

Regarding the statement that the Cliff Mine being the first "profitable" copper mine: "According to Gray (1982), bornite, chalcopyrite and carbonates fill hematite stained fractures and vesicles in basalt near the amygdaloidal upper surface of the lower Talcott basalt flow. The Higley Mine was operated on a small scale in the 1700s and for a brief period 1831-6. The first coins minted in America (known as Higley coppers) were struck from this ore circa 1729-1739 by Dr. Samuel Higley." From Mindat Higley Mine, Granby Connecticut. I believe the early CT mines were profitable mainly because copper was high and prisoners were sometimes employed as miners

If you take your dog along for the walking tour, keep an eye out for bears, wolves, and snakes. Dogs are easy prey for hungry native wildlife.
