I so appreciate the "buying guide" portion of this review! It's really helpful to hear what's comparable and what the best use case for each shoe would be. Thank you!
I was set on Saucony or Brooks…ran into these & said, why not, I tried the Clifton 9s…holiness - Immediately picked the light gray speedway and paid whatever they asked
Your reviews have become really top notch man, great job! I wasn't planning on picking this up but probably will now based on this review. Really like the look of this, the rocket x 2, and carbon x 3 but I'm way too slow to derive any benefit from those shoes. Will probably pick those up just to flex in lol. I'm really curious to know what your top picks are for the treadmill. It really makes shoes work differently. PS thanks for 0.5 size up tip on the Bondi 8, spot on for me.
I'm curious how the foam will hold up. The biggest issue I had with my clifton 8s is that the foam turned into rock after only ~100 miles, much much earlier than any other shoe I've had.
In my Clifton 6 after a 100 miles it started poking underneath my foot. I don't know why and it happens to my Bondi 6 as well. I have no issues with other brands. Seems like a durability issue. As far as I can judge I no longer buy Hokas. So I'm not so sure of their latest Cliftons.
i wanted to try hoka again but clifton 8, even in their wide version, got me injured.. lmao not sure why but the high inside arch hurt my mid foot so bad that i have to stop doing my exercise for almost 2 weeks, and i don't even run, i can only brisk walk.. hahaha
Really liked my time with the Clifton 8, but definitely don’t love the subpar durability/longevity and now the increased price. All of the changes to the 9 have me intrigued, but given how many shoes I already have, I will have to wait for these to be steeply discounted to consider adding them to the rotation.
man, always love your content and look forward to your videos so much. as a long time fan/user of the clifton (i usually have two pairs of cliftons in my rotation), i've been looking forward to your thoughts on the new clifton 9 as i always appreciate your honesty, attention to detail and insight with shoe reviews. of course, you didn't disappoint! thanks for the great video!
I just wish they would release it already. I need a new pair and want them for a half marathon on the 25th of February. Wouldn't mind at least one run in them before taking them out. I use my clifton as my do it all, with track/intervals using my mach 4 (still hanging on). At 200lbs I think that's a good combo, I don't think the mach has enough cushion to support me as a long run shoe
Quite ironically, my last run (Saturday 10K) I used Clifton 8, which I'm using for walking lately since the Novablast, endorphine speed & ride 15 became my go-to daily trainers. The ride was good, got to remind myself why I fell in love with the Clifton in the first place, but unfortunately it's not enough for me to spend the money when I can always get a better product.
I use to run in only the Hoka Cliftons for years. Then someone gave me a pair of Asics Novablast and I couldn't believe the difference. The Novablast has so much pop and energy return, while the Clifton felt like running on a frozen marshmallow. Now I run in the Novablast 3, Nike Invincible 2, and New Balance Rebel V3. Hoka is nowhere in my daily rotation anymore because their shoes have fallen so far behind the competition.
And in a weird way, I still feel the Clifton plays nicely in my rotation on days when I need a shoe that reminds me we're just out here to take it slow.
hey, thanks for your review. I ws looking for Asics Novablast 3 but didn´t get in this city. Instead I found the Cilfton 9. Happy with this election. Cheers.
My experience with Clifton, Bondi isn't anything special regarding their performance. I just find them overpriced sometimes. Pros: it's great for supinators and helps roll your ankle inwards. It's one of the few shoes that gives you that cloud like feeling.
The Clifton 9 felt so much different on my foot compared to the 8. The second I slipped my foot into the 8 I felt relief. The second I slipped into the 9 I was like oh I don’t like the way that feels on my heel. Sad they changed the heel cup.
Mike! My granddaughter (Chicago runner) just asked if I know anything about the Clifton 9. I said my friend Mike does and forwarded vid asap. She’s psyched, ordered the eggnog, G’ma Venmo’d 🎉, and everyone happy.❤🌊 Thank you, friend. 🌊🌊
Love your reviews! I feel like Nike (invincible 3), ASICS (nimbus 25), and Hoka (clifton 9) all released these max cushion new versions at the same time this year haha.
Does it fit a bit wider than the Clifton 8? I found the 8 quite long but very narrow, hoping that the 9 will be slightly shorter for the same size but sliiightly wider!
Just bought the Bondi 8 and enjoying them for my recovery runs... currently using the Puma velocity nitro 2 as my daily trainer.. Are these better or should I hold on to the pumas a bit longer coz it seems like they would last at least 6-7 months more?
But isn’t the Hoka Mach Line cost the same or almost the same, and get a lighter shoe 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ I haven’t tried the newer shoes. So maybe now you can really feel the difference between the 2.
@@Drew.Whitcomb similar in feel at that tho? Mach actually feels soft too but has good pop would you say Clifton is the same responsive pop with more cushion you do kind of feel it in the body with the Mach when going longer on long runs
@@shawnclancy62 similar softness of foam but there’s more pop in the Mach. The Clifton is a little more chill. But so far the 9 seems better able to do multiple things
I don’t have a wide foot every shoe I have worn has fitted me perfectly for the normal width size. Loved the Rincons 2 & 3 but the Clifton 8’s were a lot more narrow in the heel section so hoping these might fit better
Didn't they have an extra year between the 8 and 9? I feel like with the extra time, the evolution of other shoes in the market and the price hike... just a marginal improvement on their flagship shoe is a bit of a letdown from Hoka.
Hi, been really enjoying your contents lately and I only started to run again after i gave it up about 10+ years ago after my knee injury. Got a few questions about GPS watches in case you might be able to help me with either in the comment or could be something others may be interested enough for you to make a video. I currently run with an old Apple Watch S4 with the WorkOutdoors App. And many times I would also just grab my iPhone 12 Pro Max out for al the run. I always feel that the Apple Watch’s GPS would be more stingy on the pace side vs the phone. Is that something to do with the GPS accuracy? Do you think it would be more helpful for me to get a GPS watch? How accurate are Garmin GPS sensors on their watches compare to the iPhones? Any experiences on these?
Thx so much for the advice! I really love my Clifton 8's. Yet, I wanted to try another brand for training. However, I do love the Clifton runner very much. I am not sure what to do now.
I have the novablast 3 tr. it has beefed up grip /lugged outsole but everything else same as regular version. I have found novablast midsole to be amazingly resilient . I am taller and heavier than most runners (205 lbs and 6’1”) and midsoles flatten out and die often quickly for me. However novablast 3 has been awesome! It is up there with most resilient midsoles I have ever tried. Durability is awesome! I don’t track miles closely but use it daily for 4-5 miles on easy gravel trails and 3 months in at maybe 300 miles it is still amazingly good. Should get over 500 miles ! Fantastic shoe for daily mostly easier miles and can do some pace pushing pretty well.
SERIOUS QUESTION 👉How long they last? Because these reviews from HOKA lovers are killing me 😅"BEST SHOE, I am at 100-200miles and Im gonna need new pair" or "most comfortable shoe, but sole is dead after 100km". Damn, are u peaople really satisfied with buying expensive road shoe 2-3x per year? We need to be much more demanding...
@@kofuzi BTW - love the channel. I just found it a couple weeks back and love the content. I am trying to get into the Tokyo Marathon and your Tokyo content was really helpful/interesting.
That price point is getting a little carried away. 👎 Not saying it isn’t isn’t more fun but if the Novablast is $140 the Clifton should be priced at $130. Don’t know for sure but the Novablast is probably more durable too.
Would you suggest Clifton 9 or bondi 8 for someone looking to run a half marathon in ? I have a broad foot as well so that another factor to be mindful of. Secondly, how has the durability of both the bondi 8 and Clifton 9s been ?
I've just stumbled across your channel, I was searching for a proper review for the Novablast 3 and the Clifton 8/9 shoes. I really like your style and the videos are very informative, and don't feel stretched. Needless to say, you earned an instant subscription. Keep up the good job!
Is it better to pick Clifton or Bondi for a case of plantar fasciitis and general heel pain beneath the calcaneus bone? I should get decent shoes ASAP.
New to running. Started to get into it and started my Hoka journey/research so here I am to this video. Much much ty for the review and quality of suggestions, left a like on the video and a new subscriber 💪😏
I wear Bondi 8s at work for 12 hour shifts, Mach 5s for long runs on off days, and Speed goat 5s for any trail runs and snowy runs. Hoka does it all...
Hi Kofuzi. Which shoes do you recommend for training for half marathon. Saucony Triumph 20 or Clifton 9? I'm considering Clifton 9 just because of the wide option. Or any other recommended model? Thank you😄.
These shoes make me feel like I’m walking on the outside of my feet. I never feel like I need inner arch support but I feel like these shoes make my foot naturally buckle inwards unless I’m conscientious about each step and then it feels like I feel this weird pressure on the outside of my foot like I’m balancing on that part of my foot only .
I was SO DISAPPOINTED with the Clifton 8 (Size 8.5 WIDE). The 7 was far, far better. The 8 had become more plush, leaving (much) less internal toe-room, the tongue had gotten fat and hot, the rocker in the shoe felt like it had dissapeared and the shoe was slower. It didnt have the transition in the rolling of the foot as the 7 had, most likely to a higher drop. Higher than what Hoka claimed. And the EVA was more dead in general, but like I've experienced with the HOKA Speedgoat, the foam gets numb and dead and hardens in colder temperatures. Noticable from 5 degr. C and down. The positives? The outsole seems to last longer. I'm exited to learn more about the 9.
@@kofuzi so far, your video has been uplifting for my desire to keep going with the Cliftons 🙂 Present I use two pair of 7's and two pair of 8's as my primary shoes. All as wide! Raceshoes are NB with carbon and trail-/ultras are also NB, except the One pair of Hoka Speedgoats, that I only use for session without mud and for distances below 20K. Yearly I cover 1700 - 1900 Km's.
That's exactly how I feel about the difference between 7 and 8. I still have the 7 (even though after 600 km the foam is no longer suitable for running), but I got rid of the 8 after about 300 km , because the foam was way too soft and I felt it drained me of some portion of energy with every step. And now Hoka says the foam in the 9 is even softer. So it's more like a Saturday morning recreational 5k shoe, not a serious daily trainer.
I've been using Cliftons for the past few years as a daily trainer. I've used the v 6 to 8. My favorite was the 7 thus far (better fit for me). I've compared the Cliftons with the 1080s and the gel nimbus and the Cliftons were my favorite. I'm curious to see how the v9s wear over time. I hope you will do a 100 mile review. Thanks for the video...I base a lot of my gear choices on your reviews.
Great review. I’ve been a Brooks runner for years (Adrenaline GTS) but I’ve been less satisfied with their shoes lately. A friend recommended I check out HOKA. Would this be a good gateway shoe coming from Brooks? Thanks!
@@frank_jk i left Brooks (also the Adrenaline) a couple of years ago for the same reason. Just too flat feeling. I personally think Hoka gives similar softness feel but if you want some pop you're better looking at Saucony Guide or the Mizuno Inspire.
@@frank_jkforgot to add, If you've got some money to spend, Saucony Tempus is the other one I'm looking to try. If they ever do a decent sale here where I am in Canada I'd jump on those. Seem closest to the guidance of the Adrenaline GTS, plus PB superfoam!
looking forward what Rincon4 will offer. I went from Clifton6 to Rincon3 for weight reduction as the C7/8 got heavier. I havent really decided which model to superseed my Rincon3 yet /I dont really have Hoka reliability issue as my Clifton6 got me to 1200km and Rincon3 already at 885km, probably because im a light runner🤔
Clifton 9 or nova blast 3 for everyday? Recovering from injury so need neutral cushion as have orthotics but still need a good trainer! Training for half marathon 🙏🏻
These shoes have been great. I’m at 250 miles. Need to order another pair soon. Should I get another or go with maybe the novablast 3 that’s now on sale?
I can tell you whether a shoe is good or not or whether I like it or not. I am not a qualified medical care provider that can give such recommendations. I don’t even know what PTTD is.
Came here from threads, subbed for the value you deliver. The Clifton 9 is my first „real running shoe” that I invested in and got from a running store. Did my first 40k in the last 4 weeks and really like it. Thx for the review, now I know more about what I’m running in 😄
Thanks for the review. I know you've said in the past that you've had knee issues. Do you find that running in something like the Clifton 8/9s that have lower drops (5 mm) compared to the Novablast 3 (8 mm) alleviates some of the pressure on the knees ?
I was all in on Hoka 5 or 6 years ago, but I feel like they’ve lost their edge. They don’t seem to innovate anymore. Although, if the released the Conquest 2 again I would stock up. I loved that shoe.
I agree it's a solid update but it still lacks the energy return of similar daily trainers. Would love to see Hoka make the Clifton with a dual density set up similar to the Mach 5 or introduce a new supercritical foam.
