All these years later, coming back to one of my favorite uploads you've put up. This is ome of my favorite banjo classics, and you do a perfect rendition. Arguably my favorite of all time. Kudo, big man. And keep it rocking.
Thanks, Keith. I call it upstroke or "up-picking." For years I played this piece in a more relaxed two-finger picking style until Martha Spencer of White Top, VA told me once that she preferred my up-picking.
I think it is very similar--same basic concept. Although I have never read Seeger's 1950s banjo tutor people often use the terms "up-picking," "upstroke" and "Seeger style" interchangeably. I prefer "up-picking" or "upstroke" as these terms are more descriptive and, as much as we all admire Pete, he did not invent the style.
It's a 1980s "Goya" that originally belonged to Mr. Creed Birchfield of the Roan Mountain Hilltoppers. I think they were made either in Europe somewhere or in Japan. It's a surprisingly good banjo considering it's not American.
