Clifton springs Kayak fishing for squid is ink chaos. Seeking some shelter from strong winds and rain. An hour drive past Geelong I venture out in my hobie pro angler 14 targeting squid. Were greeted with very strange weather conditions one minute calm the next windy the next raining. However I manage to get my bag limit of squid in roughly 1 hour.
The Bellarine Peninsula is a great location for fishing. Including Geelong, Clifton Springs, Point Lonsdale, Barwon heads, Queenscliff, Portarlington, St leonards and more catching squid using squid jigs
Enjoy the vid and do subscribe to the channel. You can follow our fishing adventures by kayak, boat, land & jet ski with lures & bait to catch saltwater, freshwater, and estuary fish species. The channel is fun, relatable, and features world class fishing action and tips.

Nice video Alan. Some lovely squid there. Clifton Springs is squid and whiting heaven (and Snapper too closer to the channel,) and even moreso around to Portarlington, St.Leonards and Queenscliff. The further south you go, the bigger the whiting and squid get. And as you said, when it's a big southerly and you can't fish the top of the bay, Geelong and the Bellarine peninsula is the way to go. Those Rui jigs are great value too. Half the price of the Yamashita's, Yo Zuri's, Gan Craft's and all the other expensive Jap ones, and work really well at times. Really enjoyed watching it mate. I'm taking the boat down to Dromana tomorrow for its first 20 hour service, so having a land based fish down the Mornington peninsula tomorrow on my one day off. 38 degrees and a strong Northerly's will make it hard work, but I'm really enjoying the soft plastics.
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 4 года назад
Thanks as always Darren, yeah 38 degrees and strong winds might make it tough, but Mornington peninsula has so many good piers and jetties. Especially for land base squid. Yeah those Rui squid jigs are great value, $10 delivered and they always seem to perform really well. Plus its not so expensive when you loose the odd one. Im thinking my next few trips will take your advice and give Portarlington, St Leonards and Queenscliff a good crack. ill just need to work out some launching spots and trailer parking areas.
@Doodsy1975

Good ramps at Indented Head and St.Leonards mate, with squid and whiting fishing literally a hundred metres out. In a kayak, you could even use Swan Bay ramp.

Thank you heaps for the heads up. Its a real shame but seems to be a common theme with my last few videos. Clifton Springs, Geelong etc. I do padlock the trailer and try to have nothing visible in the car, but again thanks for the tip.

It's just the best place to fish? Lol im a bit biased though lol after you get you share af squid, out in 4-6m look for patchy weed and you can get your fill of kg whiting, i was out for squid as bait on Saturday and then the channel on Sunday 😉 got squid and whiting Saturday and a bag of pinkies and snapper Sunday bigest around 62cm, great vid great session keep it going👍
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 4 года назад
Wow, that's amazing Peter. Yes I'm certainly keen to head back there soon. Very clear waters, cover within Corio bay and don't need to go out far to get squid and whiting. I'm keen to also try the channel and give the snapper and pinkies a go. Plus the boat ramp was really quiet. 62cm is a great efforts. Thanks heaps for your positive comment.

When kayak fishing do you need and anchor to stay in one spot so the fish don’t pull you around or does it not effect much???
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 4 года назад
You can certainly use an anchor when kayak fishing, however when targeting species such as squid or flathead I wreckon you catch a lot more by drifting with the current and covering more ground. When you go over a patch of squid you simply go back and drift over the same spot. Its a very good technique that works well. Hope that helps

Fantastic, thanks for letting me know. I was actually thinking of doing the same this week as Savage have sent me a new 1-3 k rod and some new yabbie soft plastics. Its prob the best place to break them in. Just quickly how is the weed there and when your on your kayak there is it deep enough for peddles or do you just paddle. Thanks in advance

Great video Alan lucky that you are in the PA14 they handle the weather really well and I realized that after I sold my PA14 and bought my self a 3 meter kayak to fish on special for $600 and there is no comparison between the two I know there is a big price difference but you will know why that is after you owned cheap kayak and then you get a Hobie if anyone is in the market for a kayak to use in the bay just get your self a Hobie
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 4 года назад
100% agreed!!!. I did exactly the same a few years ago, I bought a kayak worth $600 and then one worth $900 however I never felt stable and tipped them a few times. Then upgraded to a hobie and native watercraft and never looked back. To be well out in the bay on slightly choppy conditions in a cheap kayak can actually be really dangerous. The hobie PA14 handles like a dream, my first and only choice for a kayak these days. Thanks heaps for your comment

@@fishingmad100% Alan I took my cheap yak to sanctuary lakes and I almost rolled it and I haven't used it since too scared to take it in the bay as you know the weather can change really quick

@@fishingmad And also these cheap yaks I think if you want to get rid of them you would have to pay someone to take it 😂 in the other hand there is always a demand for a second hand Hobie Kayaks

If your tipping it in there that sure does say how unstable it must be.
@fishingmad

Exactly, hobies really seem to hold there value other branded cheaper kayaks seem really challenging to resell. Especially when the major retailers are having 60% off sales on kayaks frequently.

Great vid as usual. I’m planning to get out this week for some squid on the kayak. It seems you are letting the jigs sink to the bottom and all the moment is from drifting?
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 4 года назад
Hi Alastair. Thanks for your positive message. I always do 2 things. I have 1 rod in hand which I work. Every 5 or so seconds, sharp lift then let it sink, and I have another rod in the rod holder just drifting. Id say its pretty much 50/50 on which rods get the most hits. Some days the one I'm working gets more but lately pretty even. I find that greatly improves your catch rates having the 2nd rod out and drifting covering ground. I hope that helps, let us know how you go. Regards Al from FishingMad

Very true, I lost interest in kayaking earlier this year for the sole reason that I couldn't life the kayak on the roof by myself. Which meant I was always dependant on others to go out. Now that I have a trailer that problem is gone and loving kayaking once again. So its a very valid concern that you have. Also its not so much the weight just because they are so long that weight is so much harder to lift.

Thanks Kevin. Paired with a Stealth 2000 reel spooled with 10 pound braid. The jigs are a mix between Rui squid jigs, asari squid jigs and I really like the new Yamashita live squid jigs. I just chop and change between colors. ill be doing a full video in the coming weeks on how to catch squid and will spend time talking about setup and techniques so stay tuned for that.

Great video mate. Just subscribed. Do you anchor or just drift when squiding?
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 4 года назад
Thanks for subscribing, great to have you on the channel. I have heaps of kayaking, boating and land base vids you will find interesting. When targeting squid I never anchor. Squid are found in patches or in groups, by drifting over weedy areas its much easier to find them. Then when you find a good spot drift back over it again. Its a great and very effective method, whether on a boat or kayak. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions. Regards Al from FishingMad
@petereaton6740
@petereaton6740 4 года назад
You can anchor and cast in a 360° area but after that you have to move, drifting is by far the better option, although trolling works even better as you work both directions, drift down troll back👍
