Where do you think this type of attitude comes from? I think part of it might arise from an emotional coddling and the setting up of intellectual safe spaces in childhood/adolescence. Curious to hear your thoughts.
@@CommonGroundConversations I would agree with your point on safe spaces. These people have probably never needed to formulate a counter argument, as everyone around them would be in agreement. It seems as if from their perspective they would believe themselves to be morally justified in their actions. It’s easy to justify shutting down debate when you have claimed the “moral high ground”. The world is about to end after all… By the way I do agree that climate change is a problem to be dealt with, but I disagree with most of the solutions presented.
@@Mike-me3sp I find this to be the case usually as well. Most people don't think about what they 'believe' but just follow the crowd. They can't provide any reasoning to explain or support their view point. Anti 2A protesters that know 0 about the laws, anti-lifers screaming all around the world that it was banned because the federal govt realized they were overstepping their role and gave that decision back to the states, Anti trumpers repeating "he's racist, literally early-mid 20th century German dictator, hates women, russia!" but can't give any argument supporting their claims. They say it, so it is and any slight challenge to their mindset is racist or sexist or whateverist
I used to be like this. Didn't know what or why I supported most of the political stuff I claimed to support. Then I started to think about things like abortion, what it is to me and why I have the stance I have. Most of my views began to change lol. I have no qualms with someone that has a different view or opinion than me. I just want them to really believe their view and be able to discuss why they hold the beliefs they hold

Chocolate. This whole channel is fantastic and something we desperately need in todays society. Really respect how you are going about it and trying to get people to reflect on why they hold certain views. Interesting to see how many of the militant believers in most of these conversations are unable to defend them without appealing to emotional arguments.
Chocolate. I think you had an under reaction. If I was you, after figuring out that they THOUGHT you were anti climate change , whenever you conversed with someone I would have told them they were the right wings and see their reaction. Just do a lot more to them. Your patience with them was great
Gotta say, I love Alex. He's obviously done more research than most would care to do. I just wish he would allow you to get a word in so the conversation wouldn't be one sided. It'd also be nice if you did a part 2 to this topic considering there's a whole of chocolate going around. Which isn't bad, it's just not the topic 😂 I also reckon you handled those guys fairly well. In that situation it'd be hard to keep your cool, but I reckon you managed to be as respectful as possible under the circumstances. Keep up the great work!
Great video. I've just newly got into this channel, and I am from America. That type of NPC behavior is often displayed when you try going out and genuinely having a conversation with a person during events like the elections. Above all, great video.
Not to mention cleaner energy also needs to rely on dirty energy frequently. Eg wind turbines need to be moving constantly so days when there isn’t adequate wind you must burn other fuels to keep them moving. Also they need massive amounts of oil to mechanically function (essentially WD-40). Also the metal blades are not reusable and must be disopsed in a landfill.
@@pvpherthen2981 Good to hear. No matter what side of the conversation we’re on, i think its safe to say we all want renewable energy when technology is reliable throughout its lifecycle.
Chocolate. I think you are probably one of the most calm people I’ve seen on RU-vid. I am an American who’s also a dual Canadian and I think you’re the nicest guy I’ve seen. I would have gotten so frustrated when people are trying to stop free speech (not sure if that’s a constitutional right in Australia). Very self aware bringing arguments to the light. I appreciated your pro life/pro choice video and what is a man and what is a woman. Truly incredible how cordial you are with respect towards others when they show you little. Especially to the guy who talked to you for about 45 minutes on what is a man. Thought you were very well thought out and it comes down to an emotional argument from the other side. It’s difficult but you unpack it very well, you got another subscriber and I’ll keep watching. Thank you for the videos!
One thing I have found helpful when dealing with difficult people is to ask them for advice or help. For example, in this situation, perhaps you could have ask them to help you stay away from gotcha questions. They would be excellent at I because they are highly motivated to do it. Or perhaps ask them to interview people so you can't trick people into gotcha moments. You have to be genuine about it. It starts from realising that people, especially people who are somewhat oppositional, can teach you something. They will have some insight or perspective that you don't have. I have found people who genuinely disagree with me are essential to my own personal development.
Also, the good thing about asking people for advice or help, is that it shows that you respect them, and don't see them as an enemy. It's validation and appreciation. Everybody needs that.
People like that don't want to give out advice or help, they only care about silencing any opposing views. You cant reason with people aren't looking to have a conversation. They're cowards and liars and will do anything to help their own agenda.
What you are doing is bloody inspiring. FInally someone trying to get a CONVERSATION OUT. Trust me and come over to Polandia, You may get some sweet topics to talk about here!
I checked my carbon footprint. I scored just under 5. I don’t drive a motor vehicle 🚗 🛵 or take planes ✈️ and my house is powered by renewables. I use public transport and that accounted 1 point. The remaining 4 points were secondary (other lifestyle choices), like diet, hobbies etc. Average Australian carbon footprint score is just under 15 and the UN’s target is 2. I haven’t heard anyone say/show the evidence how someone is going to live with a carbon footprint of 2.
You definitely can bring the score to 2 and it doesn't take much. You only need to starve a few hundred million people to death and return the entire human race back to the Stone Age technology. Eazy!
We need to be more concerned with the pollution(plastic) in the the oceans if anything. I’m not a climate change denier…I know it’s changing but it always has and will. We need to invest in technology driven energy/natural gas (burns efficiently and produces zero emissions w/carbon capture tech) but not at the flick of a switch. Electric cars are a horrible long term idea, hybrid would be good for the next 20+ years, the real probably is our energy dependence…
Yes there’s a giant garbage patch in the Pacific Ocean twice the size of Texas. And the streets get trashed with rubbish after these rallies. Cross the Webb Bridge (Melbourne) and you’ll see rubbish traps full of rubbish that has drifted down the Yarra river off the streets. That rubbish was saved from the ocean but just think about all the rubbish that the trap didn’t catch.
Yes both pollution and climate change is a major issue. Which is why we focus on both. However Australians produce more CO2 emissions per person than any other country in the world which is why it seems like the main focus. The argument about the climate has always changed doesn’t really work because this is anthropogenic climate change which is our cause and needs to be addressed by us. As for the natural gas, carbon capture tech is expensive and isn’t always efficient. Natural gas still produces CO2 emissions. And natural gas will only be available for about another 37 years before it can no longer be used for any substantial energy production. Nuclear energy supplemented by renewable resources such as hydro, solar and wind is one of the best solutions as of yet. For both sustainability and environmental impact. EVs with the correct infrastructure and minds is a pretty good long term solution, they actually make up for their environmental impact within 18 months of operational use. Hybrids are the best at the moment tho.
Utilising a majority renewable resources and carbon capture with the remaining fossil fuels is probably the best overall solution. I don’t think we should hold true to any one method and utilise the best mitigations we have to reduce the greenhouse gases. Agriculture will also have to be addressed but transportation and general electrical usage is the main focus.
8:00 min in and loving this guy. The sad thing is, he legit sounds crazy af - even to me knowing he hasn’t said a word wrong yet! 😂😂 Think people like him (and me haha) need to learn to stay calm and just say facts rather than ranting like a crazy man who people just disregard 😂
Some of his rant was accurate, if not a bit exaggerated. But a large proportion was incorrect. Anthropogenic climate change is one of the biggest consensuses in scientific history after all.
Love these conversations! You are great with people and you hold your own. Steven crowder and justpearlythings use a similar format and it is the best way to reach out to the left in my opinion
I love this content. It is the truest form of centrism that is needed. We need people with rationality to combat the political extremism that draws our political system.
I recently watched a video on our electrical grids. It was quite interesting and talked about the problems currently with switching to renewables for our grid which is that we can’t build renewable energy resources where ever we have to build turbines and solar panels in certain areas. This makes it hard because it’s often times very far away from city’s and using alternating current it’s very hard to transport energy very far. However, with recent advancements in high voltage direct current this is becoming possible and economical feasible we just need to get more installed. Some places are very hard like the us since companies have to go through every land owner in the way which can take years if not decades.
Personally, I think some people need to get re-educated on the effects of climate change and how we as humans could essentially help to reduce the effects of global warming. Like it is our fault and there are some amazing people trying to convince others to do their part and it’s just heartbreaking that some people don’t want to change their views and just want to live in their own world where climate change isn’t a real problem. Contributing your help in any way is an amazing thing, you never know if it could cause a ripple effect and you could change other people’s lives for the better and inspire them to do their parts. Thank you for this video, I found it both amusing and educational🙂
I absolutely agree, I feel like the majority of people sit in kinda a grey area where they’re like yeah it exists but it’s not as bad as they say. So better education is definitely a must
Solar energy is the most reliable “clean energy” but then again it takes alot of pollution to make a single solar cell. So far, the best option is nuclear energy
also hydro is very reliable and very clear after construction, ofc good geograpy is needed for that. Solar and wind are the most pushed and possibly the worst options.
The problem i have with “renewable energy” is that most people overlook the construction and materials of these methods of electricity production… for example the enormous amount of steel that is needed for a single windturbine
That’s an argument people like to use. But the thing is most forms of renewable energy actually make up for their manufacturing environmental impact within at most only a few years of use. But of course everything in moderation. We can’t sustain energy from just wind and solar, which is why most climate plans aim to use a multitude of solutions. Such as nuclear supplemented by renewable resources mostly hydro and a bit of wind and solar. But also the use of carbon capture tech in regards to remaining fossil fuels will help reduce the atmosphere to natural greenhouse levels.
If people were serious, the only option is nuclear. If people are environmentally honest how could they possibly be for wind turbines killing birds and clearing vast amounts of our beautiful landscape to facilitate an ideology of the elites. We are being played people, wake tfu.
Charisma on Command, another informed youtube channel, talked about how to deal with ad hominem attacks and insults, and how to continue to command positive attention in such situations. It might be a good video to watch in-whole or in-part for this sort of situation. That said the short version is to answer a question; "do you want to offend or not offend the offender". If you are alright with offending them, then there are methods to insult them back to make them become ashamed for insulting you in the first place. If you don't want to offend them, which I personally usually recommend, you such be genuine with them, either creating a boundary or answering them clearly.
I passed you at Finders St station last night on my way to the footy, I yelled “love your work brother”. Would love to have a common sense convo with you about one of the few topics i have an opinion on ❤️
I think you handled the antagonists better than most ppl. I would've been much more hostile, so good on ya m8 (I'm not Australian, but I REALLY wanted to say that last part)
So sad to see those two guys interrupting you. I rarely every say this seriously but you are doing God’s work! Keep it up and don’t let them bring you down!
You could also homestead. Grow your own vegetables which most vegans don't so they contribute to the fossil fuel issue. He's an awesome raise your own animals if you got the property or a vacant lot. Look up Joe Salatin and regenerative farming.
You’re so wholesome and those two who tried to shut your common ground talking point really pissed me off, you’re good and keep up your amazing work. Invasive and impolite is what the were.
I think a good approach is starting with something like "I understand you care about the planet, I understand you have an idea of what the best way to protect the planet is, and I understand there are people so far against your ideals that they make you angry, and I am not one of them, I am literally here to learn and allow you to share your ideas on my platform" Or something like that. I think people who read your sign, and have an emotional reaction do not respond to it with a logical argument... they feel if they show negative emotion to the proposition on your sandwich board, they can push it away; its almost like burning a witch at the stake, but with words. They have learned that yelling at something (like "climate change is an over reaction") makes it go away. And honestly, it does! There's a reason you're one of the only ones out here doing this... its because most people can't handle being screamed at and berrated. Yelling works, emotion works. 1) Start with an idea that you feel passionate about. 2) Get angry at anyone who argues against it 3) Feel like its working, even though OBVIOUSLY it isn't or you wouldn't need to get so upset. I also think though, the fact that you kept going and had a conversation with one of his "team mates" and he was able to hear it but wouldn't apologize after hearing your temperament (due to his ego), was beautiful as fuck.
Love the channel, brotha! I thought you handled the chocolate advocates as well as you could given the circumstances. Events like this are where people’s emotions and vigilance are at their most heightened. As you know very well, that doesn’t exclude yourself or your team. It’s way easier said than done, but I may have pulled them aside (not physically, of course) and tried to have a genuine heart to heart. Pull them away from the stimulating environment, ask for their perspective about who you are and what you represent, maybe even show them one of your videos, and dispel the unfounded concerns they initially had. Even if you exercise the utmost patience with and compassion for people, some are just plain difficult. I think that was the case with the choco-dudes. Keep at it man!
It’s a very complex topic and issue which requires very complex solutions. What we do have is data and the experts to interpret that data. I personally think it’s neither a total emergency nor an over reaction. Because it’s the potential of a serious emergency which is why mitigation is such a large focus. I personally think climate change is an amazing discussion to have in Australia as we produce more CO2 emissions per person than any other country. China doesn’t even make the top ten interestingly enough. Furthermore fossil fuels are a limited resource and will run out fairly soon. Most estimates place it around another 35 years for crude oil, 107 for coal, and 37 for gas (Shafiee, Topal, 2009). New solutions and advancement are definitely needed for a slow transition into net zero emissions for Australia and the rest of the world. Of course fossil fuels will remain a large proportion of our energy for a long time but the change starts with us. What I like to say is that the hardest challenge is the changing of minds.
she is iron deficient i'd say. most people eat way too much meat but not eating any at all is arguably worse especially if your not making up for certain nutrients.
I dont see how trolling helps trying to gain support on your cause. Prove them wrong instead of being an idiot, I get no one likes Avi but why not actually counter them instead of being annoying and distributing any validity to the cause. I think you handled it well, kept your composure pretty consistently.
Hats off to you man, they were so frustrating to watch. Don’t know how you kept your cool. They have no interest in real discussion and are apart of a group of people that want to distort genuine conversation. This is the problem with far-left and far-right both are as dogmatic as each other and both don’t want to listen to any opinions or ideas other than their own...
Chocolate. I like it 85% with orange. They're trolls in the true sense of the word. The only way to defeat a troll is to not give them any of your energy. Do not engage. Do not engage. Alternatively, this is harassment, imo. You could hire a bodyguard or two, to keep them physically distant from you.
Hey there, So i just ran across your Channel today and I have to say, myself being a trans women have immense respect for the way you conduct yourself. Not that myself being a trans woman should somehow over the impacts what I have to say by any means. At least it shouldn't. I merely understand, you very well likely get a lot of criticism from individuals under the LGBT umbrella, of all Sorts I'm sure. Your interviews and general attitude towards the pursuit of a common ground through an honest civil discourse it was very commendable and a uncommon virtue. It's hard to find individuals such as yourself, that truly have a seemingly genuine interest in I'll be asleep wanting to understand what other people think and why they think it in a natural, inquisitive nature. an honest and productive way. Please keep doing what your doing. Far too long has talking past each other been the Norm this day in age. And it honestly its been the root of our degenerating Society. Our ability to communicate with each other has been so diminished.. our inability to communicate with each other has affected our ability to form relationships with each other friendships with each other and even so much as feel empathy for each other. We don't personally care about other people because...we have access to so many opinions and criticisms at our fingertips and any genuine care to understand anyone's point of view is so very rarely anyone's goal or even something we are open to when we are on the internet consuming lack of content I would call it. We're so arrogant. Technology has made unrealized changes to the world and we don't yet realize as a whole what we've lost.
I like the vegan argument. I live in a country covered by snow for 6 months of the year. Most of our fresh produce comes from other countries so is shipped thousands upon thousands of km in order for us to have it. Guess that contributes nothing to climate change but me owning animals I harvest is wrecking the environment 🤔 not to mention the deforestation and decimation of the natural environment-including the culling of animals-necessary for agriculture. Also most vegans I've met don't eat whole foods and instead opt primarily for factory made foods wrapped in plastic. Astounding save the planet go vegan everyone 🤣
Chocolate! I think you handled them well. I'm in the UK for context but if I were you I'd talk to a police officer and ask for support. Thanks for your great work.
From my understanding the climate is changing but it’s hard to draw a correlation between whether it’s climate change based on human activity or climate change based on the natural cycles of the planet. The climate has always changed here on Earth. I’m skeptical that movements like these are simply to capture more taxes from the people. I mean let’s say I could guarantee that all of the energy that you personally use will be from completely renewable resources BUT it’s going to cost you 10 times more than non-renewable sources then is’nt that going to cause even more problems further down the road? This simply isn’t economically sustainable right now for a large portion of the population. Yes it makes sense to switch over from non-renewable to renewable but does it have to happen right here right now? Thanks for having these convos 🤜
The greenhouse effect is real and proven and you can actually calculate how much the greenhouse effect is responsible for the climate change and the result is that humanity is responsible but I appreciate the way you are arguing
@@maxidorre2202 correlation doesn’t prove causation if that is the proof that you are referring to. All third factors and extraneous variables must be eliminated before first coming to a conclusion.
@@airwolfcentral169 that is no correlation, the greenhouse effect was known long before the climate change problematic and we know that we cause that there is more CO2, CH4, O3 etc., which are proven to be the cause of the greenhouse effect
I was in Seattle during 2020 and the problem with these people is that they take any transgressions against them as a physical attack. In the situation I found myself in, it resulted in me being brutally attacked. The best thing I can advocate for a mutual response of direct opposition and trying to appease, but the outcome is never good with these people.
You might want to check the IPCC with regards to droughts, floods, etc. Despite what alarmist media outlets and politicians state, there are no positive trends in global droughts, floods, number or intensity of hurricanes, land area burnt due to wildfires, etc.
I wanted to hear the first guy explain more in a calm manner. I don’t think I agree with him but he sounds like he has actual reasoning behind his arguments.
Loved how you were respectful of veganism man. As a vegan who is absolutely repulsed by this current social climate full of delusional and entitled women and simps, I just want to say cheers for the amazing content.
I love these videos one thing I considered weird is the way people draw their conclusions for example the girl in C3 when asked if any logistical issues were contributing she defaults to her original position instead of just saying she doesn’t know or isn’t sure.
I am not Australian but you should look for legal advices about how much those people can interrupt your conversation. They are literally trying to silence others. The first interview was great.
Hi Jeannot, I am Australian and thought I'd just let you know, that may be a problem. Australia, as I learnt in politics and law in year 11, does not have freedom of speech/expression enshrined within its constitution, unlike countries such as the US or France (though it is implicitly protected by most judges). As a matter of fact, our defamation laws allow people who feel their character has been unjustly attacked, most often politicians who may or may not be dodgy, to silence criticism. I imagine attempting to sue these two individuals would have a high cost and relatively little effect unfortunately, though I am sure we would agree that they certainly deserve some form of reprisals for their actions. Sorry for replying months after your initial comment, but just thought you would like to know. We have startlingly less enshrined rights than I, or I imagine many others, believe.
You handled those clowns like a legend ✊🏽 I won’t be giving any advice on what I’d do because it would turn into a riot 😂 it’s a shame when people don’t want to engage in a respectful dialogue to bring awareness to perspectives that divide people, and when they hide behind masks and act disruptive (especially for their age), it would be very hard for me not to give them a brass knuckle to their face lol
I gotta say, i love your videos and was really suprised how you handled the cholocate guys. I would have thrown hands when the guy brought religion into his stupid arguments and was so suprised how calm you handled these people.
I feel safe here in saying I agree heavily with the first man interviewed. Sure he is overly passionate, but I agree with every word he's saying. I'm glad you were able to stay calm and collected even though the stuff I've seen have said you should have been against him.
Some of the things in his rant were logical and factual, but a large proportion was unnecessary, inaccurate or exaggerated. Such as the rant about BLM or the mention of religious texts when he was talking about scientific literature. It came down to mainly a misunderstanding, with the volcano myth, and conspiracy nonsense. I mean when a person acts such a way, interrupting and talking loudly it’s usually not a good sign. And unfortunately for him if he doesn’t agree with anthropogenic climate change that is kinda anti science.
I would suggest a look at some videos or papers by actual climatologists in regards to common climate change myths, you’ll see almost all of his arguments there.
Honestly, it might not be moral, but give them the threat of public embarrassment or something. Approach very civil, and yknow calm the situation down if possible. If not? Pants them.
I mean its tough to address an issue with people who are completely irrational. I mean everyone you actually talked to was annoyed by them. I think you should have cut out everything between the first man you talked to and the first women and just address these two bozos in between. I know it would make this even shorter but it was quite difficult watching them be soo annoying. Anyway, i love your content. Please continue having these conversations.
I would say that the consume of chocolate is bad for the climate because it grows mostly in South America and has to be transported over far distances which produces emissions
I would have brought the man some chocolate to soften him up. No one can remain hard hearted while eating chocolate. The aim of the game is to be patient, and figure out how to break through the person underneath. That's allot easier said then done.
@@CommonGroundConversations blow them up with a loudspeaker while doing so. Accuse them of why they are against (insert progressive left idea - ie. abortion). It's childish, but they would be fuming haha.
