Thank you so much for these videos! My husband and I always look through your channel when we are having issues with our wagon. You are our go-to reference for our car! :) We have a 97 850 wagon and the passenger side rarely gets heat. Occasionally it will go on, but if anyone changes the temperature dial, the heat will be gone until whatever is going bad decides to behave. Another thing-if it is running cold on the passenger side and we close the vents on that side (so I don't freeze when I'm riding over there) , it forces some of that cold air into the drivers side vents closest to the passenger side (the center console vents). This has gone on for years and our mechanic has replaced all kinds of parts to try to resolve it. I've said for years, it clearly seems like something that controls the switch from cold to hot on that side is worn or not catching properly since it will occasionally turn on and work. After watching this video, I wonder if it is that baffle motor on the passenger side? I'm taking the car up to our mechanic again this weekend and I'm wanting to go in with a suggestion for him. It's been going on for easily close to ten years (I've been SUPER patient-ha!) and I'm tired of being cold all winter unless I"m driving. The driver's side is nice and toasty! Does this sound like a passenger side baffle motor problem?

That or a temperature sensor. You should have an old Volvo mechanic scan it with a Volvo scanner.
@alpareis
@alpareis 5 лет назад
Sensor was one of the other things we've replaced hoping to fix the issue in the past. I took it up to our mechanic (he is a longtime Volvo mechanic) for some other work and discussed the actuator motor possibility for the ongoing heat issue on the passenger side. We both wondered if the housing on the motor was cracked because he was not getting any errors on anything in the system plus the problem sometimes goes away if we switch the temperature control back and forth. He took out the glovebox to just check in and sure enough, the housing on that motor is cracked. Right now it is working, so we've temporarily put a piece of gaffers tape over the temperature knob so we don't accidentally change it and make it stop working. In a few months (as long as it keeps working in the meantime), we'll have him open up that portion of the dash so he can access it and fix the housing on the motor. So thank you once again for your videos! We have finally troubleshooted the issue that has lingered for years!

Hi Robert :) First I just want to say that you are the GOAT Volvo tech on RU-vid. I don't think I've ever had a problem with my '97 850 base that I haven't been able to get full instruction on in one or more of your videos. Thank you very much!! Now, for my current issue(s): First, the fragile bits and pieces in the drivers' side control knob on my MCC panel broke and - when I couldn't find a replacement - I used some epoxy to glue it to the thing I had been turning with a pair of pliers. That might be relevant, but it's not my current issue. A couple months ago while I was turning the center knob, it kinda binded a bit and I turned it a bit too hard and now it doesn't seem to do much of anything. I managed to keep spinning it around so I eventually had air blowing up on the windshield so I could have defrost this winter, so it eventually does affect the airflow (or more likely, I just got lucky and it caught on something and moved the flap that I needed for the defrost). Do you think I need another MCC unit? Is it complicated to replace with all those cables and things? I do have access to Rolling Motors Inc over in Connecticut (a couple hours from Brooklyn NYC), but I'm a penny pincher and I'll try to find one at Harry;s U pull it if it's not too much for me... Thanks for your time and for all your efforts!! Edit: I just saw that you have another video for MCC units. I'll watch that now and rely in comments if there's any further questions. TYVM!!!

Very helpfull video! Changing these motors is a real challenge because the screws are so hard to reach. I guess it's worth pulling the dash to get better access from above. Btw, the motor you show at 02:03 doesn't exist on my -97 S70 and I believe there never was one on that last car in your video either, there are no screw holes for it.

My recirc motor went bad awhile ago and every single one we've pulled from the junkyard is bad as well. The gear teeth shear off easily and when we found a good gear the shaft it was on had a different angle then the original for whatever reason and the circuit boards seem to glitch out and not function properly. My recirc is currently controlled by a shoelace attached to the white arm

It seems mine has fallen off from its hook the actuator work fine, as it worked before, it seems i may have knocked off the flap accidentally while i was replacing the filter. Do I go from the inside of the vehicle by removing the blower motor or do it from where the cabin filter is located.

Has volfcr code about no position change. Cant be motor if works sometimes? Seems more likely ecc itself. I replaced bulbs with led 2 years ago and just now having issues. Also now have abs tracs issue ughh. Says right rear wheel sensor open circuit and right rear extrapolation. 314, 324, ive read usually wheel sensors never fail and usually abs module pins crack and require reflow.

Hey robert if my 1998 volvo V70 was running 3 months ago and when summer came it all of a sudden stopped. Check compressor no leaks lines are cold mechanics told me that door wont open but I replaced my blenddoor and still wont work. For some reason a/c relay is not working, had to use bobby pin to get that to turn compressor on but when compressor started running no cold air came out. Do you think that idea with a system reset with volvo tech will do the trick and fix a/c relay issueor do you think like your previous video about the compressor clutch gap could be the problem thats causing a/c relay to shut off? 6:35 that motor that "was already removed" doesn't exist. The peg is connected to the higher actuator on the other side that controls all the directional flow from face to feet to windshield. The lower one on the driver side is driver temp obviously, and the one that does exist on the passenger side is passenger temp. Driver side temp is easy after removing cruise control actuator. The directional one is not terribly hard after removing the knee bolster and a couple other items. The passenger side temp one is a pain in the dick, after removing glove box there's a tiny amount of space to work your 1/4th ratchet and a swivel, but requires doing most by feel. I just ripped out the 3rd tab that's hardest to get to, left the screw in, and cut the tab off the replacement. 2 screws is enough to hold these in place.
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 6 лет назад
So you have MCC?
@ChristopherBurtraw
@ChristopherBurtraw 6 лет назад
Robert DIY nope. ECC. There are 4 total actuators. Recirc by the blower, pass temp on passenger side, driver temperature on the lower side of driver footwell, and that higher one you say is the hardest (upper drivers side) is the one and only directional flow actuator. The peg you see higher up on the passenger side is connected to the same mechanism as the last mentioned actuator. If you take out the actuator, you can manually move it on the passenger side.

After removing the lower driver dash and putting my head by the pedals, I can look up and see 2 motors on my 850, and neither motor interfaces with that black cylindrical piece that Robert touches at 3:54. I can see both of those motors in this video, so I don't believe the 850 motor was actually pulled. (At 3:54, there's one motor in the background below Robert's hand, and the other motor is sticking down from the top of the screen.) I presume that the black cylindrical piece is used in the manual control system; at any rate it doesn't have an obvious purpose in the 850's ECC system. (Now on the V70 at 6:51, I would concur that one of the motors has been pulled.) As far as I can tell, all of the motors for the ECC are the same part number, W0133-1602137-OES. I'm struggling to find it cheaper than $207.89 on the internet. I'm having driver side temp control issues. It sounds like from Chris' post that I need to replace the actuator that is behind the cruise control thingy. That's a relief, because the other motor is harder to access. With my Volvo having about 220k miles on it, I figure the average service life of this motor is somewhere between 110k-330k miles. At 0:55, we see a black metal structural piece that looks kinda like a corrogated pipe running horizontally across the bottom of the passenger dash area. The driver's side has one of those horizontal metal pieces also, but if I'm not mistaken, that driver side metal piece is missing in the video at 0:55. I'm not sure if that piece is bolted on or welded on or what it's called. If it is possible to unbolt that metal piece without removing the entire dash, that would afford a lot more room to access the motor screws. I'm betting that's not possible though.
@ChristopherBurtraw
@ChristopherBurtraw 6 лет назад
@@engineermike5987 just put a used one in there. It's easy enough to replace that spending New $ on it is not a good choice. In any case, ECC only has 3 motors, driver temp, flow control (drivers side upper) and pass temp under that airbag. All can be done without dash removal with the right tools and a good hand. I've done it. Of course, there's also a fresh/recirculator door actuator, so 4 total. Not sure how hard that is to change, but hopefully it can also be done.
