That's my grandpa's engine and I've always wanted to see the 765 cab. Brought tears to my eyes watching your video. Thank you! A bit of family lore is my grandpa used to throw out candy to the kids when he went past them while running the engine. How times have changed.

765's cab has got to be one of the coziest and most comfortable Cab's in any type of locomotive I've ever seen in my life

As a kid in the 60's, I use to see this engine behind the fence on display near the old power plant in my hometown. Brings a tear to my eye to see how far this group has come to preserve history and this work of art. I hope some day to find time and come home for one of the open houses. Thank you for posting these videos for this far flung Hoosier.

First, THANK YOU FWRHS for everything you do! Second, I have a request please. For us folk who've been around for a while and understand what goes on in Gods seat, and the firemans place of honor, how about a video or thirty showing how to set/test/operate the steam turret. Or some of the other appurtenances that don't receive the glamour albeit just as important IE: FW Heater system, cold water system, air pumps, lubers, etc etc. Theres valves all over a steamer. Even though some of us know what they are, sure would be nice to get the how- to's, the wherefores, and the hereafters on them. Im quite sure some folks have never pondered just how do you get water into a pressurized container. Especially back in the 30's. 1830s that is! That black box that controls the rear units sure could use some splaining too! Don't spose youd wanna take the cover off that for a look see aye? BTW, Im still preying to the Great Golden Spike in the Sky you folks or 1225 (SRI) can make down south some day. PLEEEEASE! Its Thanksgiving, it'd be proper to give Thanks for FWHRS, 765, and families - I do so! Stay safe!

well If you want to know you have to join, and some of what you wish to know will be taught in the servicing and safety meeting they hold yearly, I can as course of matter tell you about how they get the water into the boiler and turn it into steam, and the air for one the handle beside the engineer controls the injector that uses steam pressure to push water into the boiler after its primed I belive it is using the venturi effect to draw and mix then uses pressure to push water into the vessle, there is also a water pump that is used when running and the steam is heated as it pumped from the front end where the hot exaust helps to preheat it and pumps it into the boiler so you are not using your steam to do the job, cold water robbs power and takes more energy to convert to steam its also harder on the boiler plates and staybolts, the fire in the firebox heats the water and there is a gap between the outer and inner firebox where the box itself is surrounded by water and heated to boiling the hot gasses from the fire also travel though long tubes and pipes that run to the front of the engine where the smoke box is and used steam and all that black smoke is puffed out the smoke stack, it is also imperitive youdont let the top of the firebox be exposed to low or no water over it, can cause the crownsheet or top of the firebox to warp and fail and very bad things will happen if that occurs. the steam gathers at the top I belive by the steam dome and it goes though pipes which will run it though the fire again in the superheater to dry it out and make it get even more bang for buck so to speak with the steam you got, there it is piped to the giant cylenders and pushes a piston that turns the wheels, it also runs to the other things like the whistle the stoker moter that puts coal in the firebox when running, and the airpump and other appernences as you call them. the airpump is the thing on the very front of the engine on one of the two pipes that stick up on each side. there are other things to the engine as well but that is a basic run down. there is also the generator for the lightes and things in the engine that run on electricity we run 2 or three dynamos on the engine if I remember correctly, the bell is ran by the air pump I belive and the brakes as well , the injector is steam powered and I belive the water feed pump is as well, ah you also have the blower which puts steam though a ring around the exaust blast pipe to provide draft on the fire to help keep it burning when not moving and jets of steam around the firepot in the firebox where the coal comes up from the stoker motors auger to help direct where the coal goes on the firebed as you are running you dont want dead spots on the fire it too can cause your grates to melt and robs you of power you could be getting from the coal you are burning, the stoker is because you could not shovel fast enough to keep up with the burn rate of a large engine like 765 I belive they said 2 to three could not they tried once when the stoker motor broke or something while running and they could not keep up. you will also have the tri cocks on the enginners side to check the water level if the waterglass can not be used or breaks out, the gold color thing is the open and close valve for the cylender cocks to let the water out from the condensation as if hot steam hits that it will flash boil and launch the piston into the next county as mr melvin would say, and why steam comes out the side when starting out, then dont as you get running and puffs the exaust as it runs each piston pushes exaust steam up though the smoke box and creates draft like puffing a cigar or the blast on a blast furnace and the harder she runs the hotter the fire, the hotter the fire the better the superheater works and easier she makes steam, as well as when you get going you can use more limited cut off so you can let the steam fully expand in the cylender before being exausted and that is controled with the johnston bar that is the gear shift thing to the reverser to change direction forward and back and how much steam is admited to the cylender in each cycle. oh and you have the sander for traction at the wheels

Can anyone explain why 765 has a conventional reverser lever but 1225 has a reverser wheel instead?
