Climbing harness VS hunters safety harness. In this video, I compare and contrast a hunters safety harness and a tree climbing harness (interchangeable with a rock climbing harness). The harness I used is this one amzn.to/2PKzmyu

I’ve been using a super lightweight climbing harness for years now for all of my hunting, and I do the one stick method whenever I want to work up a good sweat. This year I am hunting a county sponsored hunt, which requires the 5 point HSS. It’s a drag, but, rules are rules. Really enjoy your videos, bought and read one of your books recently. Keep up the great work! BTW, as one person questioned, hardly any rock harnesses have linesman loops. I think DIY Sportsman found one a few years back. But I’ve never had the need for that feature - I use the single stick rope technique of tying off to the tree even when I’m not doing the single stick method.

I fixed this by adding my own lineman's loops. Go over to Saddlehunter and there are tons of cheap and safe options. I wrapped a piece of 1" climb spec webbing around my waist and harness and then tied loops at each end on my sides in the proper position. I then only had to keep the thing from slipping up. I used 50 lbs break strength thread and sewed the entire thing to the harness using a lock stitch and 1,000s of stitches. It is extremely strong and can likely hold 1,000 lbs or more, but my sewing doesn't have to because I'm simply leaning back against the webbing behind my back and all the stitching does is keep it in place. I then took 5/8" climb spec webbing and tied loops around the harness and webbing to join them and then sewed those in place, so even if my initial stitches fail I would have to break several webbing loops to fall, which is nearly impossible.

6 point fall arrest harness designs for hunters were lifted from work sites such as bridge and antenna repair. At those work sites, you hardly ever work and fall alone. Therefore, they are not worrying as much about suspension trauma since you have someone to help you. If you fall badly in the woods alone with a 6 point harness and do not get out of it or use the suspension trauma relief system properly (like you drop it due to stress), then you can easily die or lose you legs. In comparison, if you fall in a climbing harness, then you can safely hang there for hours. Once familiarize yourself somewhat with how climbers and arborists do things, tie lines, etc.; you will see that all of the hunter specific stuff you buy is unsafe and cheap junk. They don't even tie the proper knots half the time and do crazy stuff like crimp lines with metal and then hide it under rubber tubing. The climber specific stuff is lighter, stronger, cheaper, and safer. I can't imagine anyone switching back to the 6 point fall harnesses and poorly made hunter safety stuff (yes, even brands like Muddy stink compared to something like Petzl, Metolius, etc) after using climbing gear.

I was hoping someone commented about this. The 6 point cuts off circulation to your legs while the climbing does not. I hear many hunters have died or lost legs from this.
@MrShysterme
@MrShysterme 4 года назад
@@Justin-zs1ql Yep, versus climbing and arborist harness are made to hang from, rappel, etc. And they are so much less binding and comfortable. You can easily put it on and then walk miles and only tighten it quickly at the tree. If you hold an $80 Petzl harness and understand the research, development, and quality control that goes into that thing, then you will realize that reputable climbing company gear is simply in a different league than Muddy or Hunter Safety Systems (like comparing a Yugo to a Tesla). Even the ropes from hunter-specific companies are heavier and not as strong, they even skimp or misapply tech there in something easy and then tie an overhand knot and crimp it down with metal or something. Also, climbing harnesses orient you so that you can be athletic after a fall, grab your rope, use your legs, etc. and self-rescue. My Muddy required me to get a little piece of webbing out of a bag tied to my harness and then tie a knot, so I wouldn't lose my legs or die (?!?). Also, hanging from a 6 point harness is supposed to be excruciating because it focuses so much stress on your groin and femoral artery. I always hear guys claiming "I'm gonna use what the archery professional make to be safe"....well more experienced people than them figured it out and employed it far better many years ago (climbers and arborists).

The falling on purpose is not a great feeling. I tried it once myself. Both harnesses work. The HSS harness has a benefit of keeping you more upright with the shoulder straps. In the event you happen to flip upside down coming out of the stand. You hang more like a piece of meat. The jingle jangle of the leg straps is not optimal but I don't hook them around my legs till I get to my tree. Then I hold the locks open when I put them on to cut down on the noise. The strap to the tree does tend to get in the way. The climbing harness is much more comfortable but by October you have enough layers on you don't notice it. Being tethered at the waist does make movement easier.

Hey Sean, I am considering the climbing harness to use when up high on a ladder while cutting the top out of a tree. Does the harness come with everything needed, like the strap that would wrap around the tree (about 8 ft around)? I am not clear on what all is needed to attach the harness to the tree. Anything else to recommend?
@seansoutdoors

It does not. You'll need a lineman's rope. About 10 feet long will enable you to use as a lineman around the tree or lanyard around the tree and just hang there

So far I have just used the typical hunters safety harness. Like you i find it annoying to have that strap behind your shoulders when drawing back. However, the hunters safety harness does fit well over or under large cold weather clothing. What has been your experience with wearing the climbing harness with large pants and jackets?
@seansoutdoors
@seansoutdoors 3 года назад
I have been using the climbing harness exclusively for two years now and I will never ever go back to using the full body hunters safety harness. I like the climbing harness so much better and if you think of it, tree arborists and rock climbers all use just the climbing harness around the waist and legs and not full body. Why do hunters then think they need to do something differently than what everyone else is doing who is hanging from a rope off the ground somewhere?

My Cousins neighbor died from suspension trauma while hunting using a typical full body harness. Been using Black Diamond Alpine Bod harness ever since. Always use full length rope, about 35 feet, so if I fall I can lower myself to ground. Plus it doubles as a pull rope for my gear. Use proper climbing knots and gear. I don't use the setup to climb, only as a safety measure. I carry 2 small sticks I made myself, similar to hunting beast sticks. My stand is hung with other steps higher up in tree so I only need to two sticks to get started. Everybody has their own way....just hunt!

DO NOT use a stand without a safety line/harness/lineman belt EVERY single time you climb. Likely saved my life.
