Just a note. The climbing rope he is using is static climbing rope. Actual rock climbing rope is dynamic which basically means it has some stretch to it. As a rock climber and deer hunter I would highly recommend this setup and the use of static line/rope. 11.0mm works great in the Wild Country Ropeman 1. Great video sir.
Jason-using the Ropeman 1 ascender to replace the prusik knot on my lineman's belt was a HUGE difference. My rig was already set up like yours (we even use the same safety harness!), but this just made it that much simpler. One-handed operation is the only way to go!
I made 2 lineman belts per your previous video 3 years ago & it works absolutely perfectly. An important consideration of your design & lifeline is that it has calmed my wife's nervousness about me falling from trees. Also, I purchased your Scouting Video & it is excellent! Thank you.
Curious.... When buying rope, how much should I start out with? And how much space would you say you are using knot to knot? (I know the last question is a matter of preference, but trying to get a general idea"
Works great , hunt and prep very similar to your style. Longbow , recurve , mobile. Rope man 1 ? Getting a little noise when backing it off. Any suggestions. Thanks John.
The Ropeman 2 is actually the better ascender. All high end ascenders use the teeth approach. Ascenders that cost 100-200 each all use it. I bought my first ascenders, Jumars, in 1972, and last year bought some replacements, they all use pointy teeth. The only reason the Ropeman 1 does not is because the cam is Aluminum saving a fraction of an ounce in weight. Aluminum is too soft to carry the detail in the point cam surfaces, which are made in steel. I am not climbing Everest without oxygen, so that tiny increment of weight would not influence me, but then today when I tried to buy an R2 , they didn't have one, so I bought the R1. It isn't a big deal. SO LONG AS, one is using real climbing rope in the correct size. There are products that look like climbing rope (or similar grade products such as those used for fast ropping and rescue) where the only load bearing part of the rope is the mantel. Some ropes even have material that looks like plastic bags in the core. In fact with climbing rope, the load bearing part is the core, the mantel is all about handling, durability, etc... But use a ropeman on real rope, and either one will work in our situation. Fraying in the mantel fo a climbing rope does not affect the performance, and improves handling. It gets a nice fuzz to it and that is as far as it goes.
I did not like the ropeman 2. It was too hard on the rope. The ropeman 1 has served me well for 25 years. But I for sure appreciate all the detail and info in this comment, especially about the ropes. Thanks.
Thank you, again. Looking for the video on that tether extension... Found it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FpLOdOCu7vY.htmlsi=tOG31oLrIPJdqtsc How about a playlist just for the rope and saddle setups?
I am so pumped I found your videos. I’m hoping to get my first hang on stand next season and after watching a video or two I realized there is a lot more to it. After some searching I found your videos. Your videos have drastically increased my confidence going up in a tree next year. I will be using your links to make my own linemans belt. Thank you for your time and knowledge!
Yep I like the stiffness and flickability of the 11mm better for a lineman belt that gets flipped up and down the tree. On my tether I don't mine 8mm or larger as long as it's dynamic for the tether
i really like this, bought the ropeman1 what diameter size rope do you use. It looks like the carabiner wont fit in the hole in the ropeman 1 with the rope that came with my hunter specialties rope.
My question is, my ladder stand is already up so how does this system help me climb the stand to attach my life line rope, the ladder stand is at an angle so it’s not right against the tree Thanks
It doesn't help you with climbing a ladder stand. But a life line put up and left up with the ladder stand will as you slide the prussik up and down as you climbe the ladder
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d3C4pr-lCgI.html This video shows the knots I use on both ends I think. If it doesn't let me know. But I. Pretty sure this one shows the knots and how to tie them.
Great straight to the point videos. I've just started using a harness, just the ones they include with your stands. The linesman belts are loud and crap. Made my own as per your video with supplies from MEC here in Ontario, Canada. I feel like now I can be safe as well as stealthy. Thanks again.
Bought my rope man for Christmas and set it aside, just put together my lineman‘s belt after watching this video, took two minutes. Thanks again for the video
That was a seat of the pants harness that has been discontinued years ago. Now I use the one I designed and is made my tactisaddle.com called the tbws tree stand harness.
Hi, I know sometimes you post updates to video's. Is this the latest and greatest lineman belt video? Thanks man great content been following for awhile.
There are 2 or 3 more videos since then. All basically the same. On my channel hit the magnifing glass and type lineman. Theu will pop right up for you
@andykrug8741 correct but I'd probably buy 12 feet so you have room to make the knots and get it exactly thr length you want. It's worth the extra couple dollars for the peice of mind. The knots take up alot of rope
Been putting this off for 2 years. Just ordered the stuff I need from the links provided. Thank your...my prusik knot linesman’s belt is getting annoying.
thanks for putting all this info and the links out here to make it easy for us! I just ordered my ascender and 2 carabiners via your affiliate links! combining this with my wild edge steps to go super lightweight portable for 2020.
I still prefer the ropeman 1. The Kong is similar but the big hole makes the carabiner noisy and has to be stealth stripped and the carabiner is always flopping around
About 12 feet then make the knots and adjust the stopper knot shorter if needed. Easy to cut it shorter rather than make it too short. I like mine about 7 feet once all done
I dind't want to by the Tethrd system (sweet but $$$$). ..and will use my climbing gear harness, order an ascender and just DIY my own and save $$. Thanks.
I think that your videos I have seen are excellent, but I contest your views on a prusik... I don't know how you are tying them, but I have never had to use two hands to adjust a prusik, infact they are adjustable by using two fingers. Not saying the Ropeman is a bad option, but using a prusik for years as a hunter and a former arborist, I have never needed two hands to adjust. I am going to be building a new Linemans rope to lighten the weight load and I will be doing this, or atleast VERY similar! Great videos and well explained!! Thank you!
It's easy to extend the line on a prusik but pulling in tighter by grabbing the tag end and pulling doesn't work with a prusik unless it has a tender or something to hold the knot back. Atleast for me. The rope man is some, fast and easy to adjust line in or out. That makes me constantly make sure I have the right line length to keep me safe. Lots of good options out there. But for me the ropeman one is as simple, quick and functional as I could ever ask for.
Its a discontinued older model made by seat-o-pants. They quit making it about 8 years ago. when they stopped making them I bought 3 extras. the one im wearing is my last one. sucks too, as it was the best minimalist harrness out there and still would be today.
Guys, and gals....don't say "it can never happen to you"! Guy I knew was in his early thirties and his wife was pregnant with twins. The day he fell his wife went into labor. They shared a room in the hospital. Twins were born healthy and he started a new life in a wheelchair. He was now paralyzed from waste down and was only a year into his new marriage. His condition shortened his lifespan and he passed away a few years ago. We had discussions about that day. What he remembers is getting to his chain-on stand around 1:00pm and starting to work his way into his stand when something came loose. He remembers his back hitting limbs below and his body flipping in circles around them. He remembers being unable to move on the ground. He remembers his best buddy calling his name in the dark ( his wife called his buddy because he didn't return an hour after dark ). He had laid there all afternoon and nobody was there to help him. He continued to hunt but his hunting was now in a ground blind with a crossbow. His life changed dramatically that day and it was all to a lack of knowledge and equipment. RIP Jack Taylor...your lesson will always be shared and hopefully your legacy will save someone else from a similar accident.
Good video. I see one of the link's you posted in this video about the 11mm rope. When I watched some of your other videos, you said these linesman ropes you have are PMI rope which is the stiffer rope. In this link in this video, this rope is DoMyFit 11mm rope from Amazon not PMI. Different brand. Is this type of rope in this link just as stiff as the PMI?
Most people won't spend the money for pmi ez bend as it doesn't sell buy the foot and is expensive. So the link is to a different less stiff but still good 11mm rope. I do buy and use the pmi and love it. But many people won't spend 150 bucks for 100 feet of it just to use 10 feet.
@@SamkoTradBow thanks. Yeah that's all I want. 10 ft worth. I do like that PMI rope that is stiffer than the other one that you said is less stiff. I guess it is what it is and I just gotta pay for it if I want the stiff rope. I didn't want to order the other type of rope and once I get it I see it's too flexible and I gotta return it back. Some places won't let you return rope back if it's sold by the foot. But I'm glad you told me this other rope in this link in this video isn't as stiff so I won't get that. I'll trust your judgment and get PMI.
@@SamkoTradBow when you cut the rope how do you seal the ends so they don't fray? And how long does the pmi rope last you before you have to make a new one?
Which ropeman 1 do i need? OS or 10-13mm.10-13 mm makes the most sense but the holes for the carabiner look more oblong on that one. And looks like the OS in the video. Could someone please clarify?
The ropeman 1 is what you want. They only make a 1 and a 2. the one is for 10-13mm rope. I think os is just the orange one. But regardless you want the ropeman 1 for 10-13mm
Awesome! Glad to hear you are taking your safety so seriously. Any questions on any of it ask anytime. There are no dumb questions and myself and everyone that comments on my channel will do everything we can to help you any way we can.
You have 2 options, one works right and the other way doesnt...lol I should of shown it better and will next time I make a video about this lineman belt. I make one every year and will include that in the next one.
Great video Jason. I'm a safety first kind of hunter and I just built my first lineman's belt using these components from REI. Good on you for building one for Steve. He's a good dude. Happy Hunting this season and be safe!
Great video on your safety ropes set up ...... I just bought a Novix Helo hunt ready system and I need to learn the best way to use this system . Your video tips are a great way to start this process . I'm 62 years old and have used climbers and lock ons for years, the thing I like about being mobile is of course the element of surprise , and using a lock on system allows me to be able to hunt just about any tree near the best deer sign , I'm looking forward to using some of your tips . take care and good hunting to you !
Could you use the rope man one on your lifeline As well instead of the Prussic(sp) knot Ps thank you for this video. I’m 35 and have been hunting since I was 12 but this is my first year bow hunting//hunting in a tree. I’m terrified of heights and your videos on lineman’s belts and lifelines was a game changer. I feel like I’m not gonna die in the damn tree now. Thank you.
I would not use a ropeman as a lifeline connection. That line could end up having a lot of slack in it depending on you sitting or standing etc. I would not want to put a full drop with a couple feet of slack on a ropeman. Not that I think it would hurt it. I just think a solid rope in that situation would be better. Now for a lineman belt the ropeman is perfect.
Jason good seeing you again, I bought every thing you mentioned works good ,it is new so going slow for now, for now im using 3 hawk helium,a couple step straps and the 3 foot aider!! JASON have you any info on hunting clicker silent clicker?
I'm a bigger fellow like yourself, I have a muddies full body harness. Do you recommend that or something better? I purchased the rope and stuff you recommended for a lineman belt
Muddy harnesses are great harnesses. I like the minimalist ones like muddy, gorilla, tree spider, etc. If you like the muddy id stick with it, its a great harness!
How it "splits" is called a "sheave" this is absolutely a good ascender. First series is easier on your line & creates less freying due to the LESS aggressive teeth on the cam than the second series. But the Ropeman 2 has a stainless steel cam & is rated for much more weight. I climb trees professionally & it's a solid system. I would suggest 2 buckstraps or what this guy calls lineman belt or whatever for transitioning around limbs. Spend the few extra bucks & get a few locking carabiners. It's worth staying alive.
We have the safety line that is connected to our shoulders to use as a safe line when we have to disconnect the lineman belt to get around limbs. But its defineltly not as fast as 2 lineman belts, but is quieter as we don't have carabiners clanking together. Thanks for the detailed info!
Cool system. Agree with a comment below - good info - agree or disagree - but well presented videos. I appreciate your work. I'm not very pretty so tree rash on my face isn't going to do much damage - better than the dead option. Be safe and hunt well!
A lineman's belt is not a fall arrest system. See video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SO4DtyayIQM.html If you had the tree straddled, then you would be more likely to grab on. But it is not a certainty. The only way to be absolutely safe is to be tethered.
A linemans belt is the ONLY way to safely climb a tree. Answer me this: how are you going to get up the tree to hang the tether? I get so tire of people that think i dont know what im talking about! THE ONLY WAY TO SAFELY CLIMB A TREE IS WITH A LINEMANS BELT! if its a stand you want to leave up then a tether is fine. when you hunt like us mobile hunters we go up and down with our stands evey sit. so a tether is pointless.
@@SamkoTradBow I mentioned this because I legitimately think you are advocating a dangerous practice. My ego is not involved here. I'm not in anyway advocating ditching the lineman's belt. I am advocating using it and a tether while going up the tree. That's how most people use a climber, if safe. They slide the tether ahead of them and are always connected to the tree with it. With sticks, you keep the tether on the tree and you move it up the tree ahead of you, except with sticks you are still using the lineman's belt as well to lean back. When you encounter a branch, you carefully position yourself, then disconnect the tether and move it around the branch, you then move the lineman's belt up next. Branches are the only time you don't have both the tether and the lineman's belt in use. It is pretty easy to look at industry practices regarding folks that work at heights and whether or not a lineman's belt is considered a fall arrest device. It is not. There are some belts like the treesqueeze which are kind of a lineman's belt and tether in one. But it doesn't take a lot of imagination to see how you can use a tether while putting up and taking down sticks. I do it and it adds like 2 or 3 minutes to my time and makes me several orders of magnitude safer. Also, it is pretty easy to find videos, like I did which was ignored, that shows someone falling with a lineman's belt attached. It would obviously be feasible to have a step or stick kick sideways similar to what that video showed. If you have videos of people demonstrating the lineman's belt stopping a fall, then that's great. Or anyone advocating it as fall arrest. But I'm betting they don't exist. There are lineman's belts that squeeze the tree in a constrictor motion and provide some fall arrest, but yours does not.
@@SM-cy1er yes a lineman belt is a fall arrest. Your video you showed was on a smooth telephone pole with a flat wide strap and too much slack and no snag items below him. In a tree the lineman belt will snag on the tree pulling you into it and also snag on the step or stick right below you. Your coming at this I'm assuming as someone who is new to tree stands or doesnt hang them often. Every single person that hunts mobile that I know personally has slipped a step or had a stand slip or a strap break or a buckle slide loose and have had our lineman belts stop us and save us from hitting the ground. To insinuate that I'm showing a dangerous practice is insulting and frankly pisses me off as its coming from someone that doesn't know much about what he is talking about. Only 78% of hunters where a harness. Of those only 40 percent where a lineman belt when hanging a stand and of those I imagine only 10% use thier safety line in conjunction with their lineman belt to get around branches. Between all my videos and what I teach in hunters safety and international bowhunters education I have taught hundreds of thousands how to be safe in a tree when hunting. If you want to pack in a tether and use it along with your lineman belt and your safety line go right ahead. But I dont see any gain from it. I trust my lineman belt to stop me everytime. It has no other option as it can not go down the tree with the sticks and steps below it.
@@SamkoTradBow Listen, I hesitated breaching the subject with you at all initially because I knew from your demeanor on camera that you would act like this. I called it in my head beforehand 100%. You are using spurious logic, an appeal to authority, emotionalism/anger....and just asserting things. You are just asserting it is a fall arrest without any evidence other than your resume', and you don't even seem to know that this claim controversial. Your lack of knowing it is controversial is telling. It's like a obstetrician not knowing that some people dislike compulsory male circumcision. Also, thinking that an actual tether adds little is telling. It goes from "probably okay" to "nearly certain in nearly all circumstances". I hope you leave this exchange up because it will be telling for others and will likely keep someone safe. An interesting thread you should read all the way through and not cherry pick. saddlehunter.com/community/index.php?threads/linemans-belt-risk.8112/ There are TONS of these. And you will see a trend where the most credible people with the most experience disagree with you.
Great video, Great idea and very creative. But I'm missing something. What kind of belt do you affix to your waist? A Swiss seat or something like it? I really want to try it!!!!
This is awesome! New to the channel and the podcast and I honestly can’t get enough of your content. I appreciate your No Nonsense approach and tactics. I am literally going to make this right now! Thanks Jason.
On the hunter safety lifeline, will that rope work for a belt setup like yours? I would also like to make a tether from a lifeline I never put up. I am fixing to order a new saddle. If I can use the lifeline rope I already have, it would just be that much cheaper to build the ultimate setup
The rope man 1 is designed for 10-13mm rope so if your tether is in that range you are good to go. If ots smaller than 10 you will need a ropwman 2 or kong unit to make that rope work.
I can not make and sell them do the craft high cost of liability insurance for something like this. But the links below the video take you right to what you need and it only takes a few mins to put it together.
Appreciate this video I am sick and tired of messing with the not that slides On the traditional Lyman's built However I do not C The link to Amazon I have found the product but if I'm going to buy it anyway you might as well get Little something out of it Also I know this is dangerous but a lot of times when I would transition onto my stand I would take the lemons belt off and not Tie off to the tree until I got on to the stand do you have a video of your set up for your safety line Thanks a bunch
Appreciate you wanting to buy it thru my link! In the video right below the video there is a text description and the link is right there to the ropeman and all the carabiners and rope options right there for you. Yep I do have a video on my safety line set up. I have that video linked right here for you. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FpLOdOCu7vY.html
So just got my climbing sticks and ropeman#1 and have everything set up. I gotta say man o man totally scairy compaired to my climbing tree stand. I Got lots of pratice till Im confident climbing up and setting tree stands in the dark. You make it look very easy
Just built one last week and used it today to hang a set.. Great to feel safe on the tree. Worked just fine. I have some fearz when it comes to heights and this really helped.
Glad you like it. Has a ton of benefits over a prussik with speed and safety as well as thermal regulation with the ability to have both hands free to hang sticks and stand.
Also, please don't use that overhand knot to shorten your lanyard and take up slack. If you shock load it it will pull through and your underwear will change colour. as well as your hat.
Yeah I know it can pull thru but its just to take up a foot of slack and the knot would slow down the short drop even if it did pull thru. But I would still be safe and connected. I appreciate the great point though and dont want my shorts to change color!..lol
Eat sleep and bow hunt this is why I watch this guys videos you can tell he is passionate can’t wait to take his online hunting course .IF he could add some videos of him shooting deer from the stand that would be icing on the cake great job .
Linesman belts, alone, are not fall arrest devices. It may possibly save you, but it's not a guarantee. You should be attached with a tree strap as well for true fall arrest. I don't when hanging stands...but telling people that this is a fall arrest system is incorrect and extremely misleading. Better than nothing, but it's entirely possible to fall to the ground with a linesman belt around the tree. Also, a prussic is far more controllable to release slack than that mechanical device and can be done with one hand...I do it. If you added a tending micro pulley to a prussic, it's performs exactly as that device does(auto tending), but gives you far more control to let out slack. Solid video, and the belt is good, but some of the information is incorrect according to national standards.
Love the time you took to write this and appreciate your input. I dont however agree with you on a public knot being better. Not even close to being equal. I also dont agree that a lineman belt would let you hit the ground with any speed that is dangerous not to mention it would hang up on sticks and steps and stop you. Again many years running this set up and tested very hard for all possibilities. I do however agree with you 100% that you need a safety line when in the stand. And I preach that 100%. But if you are hanging a stand ( I hang and hunt every time I go in the woods as a mobile hunter ) a good lineman belt is the safest way to climb the tree. Period.
I can not sell them do to the cost of liability insurance needed. It takes like 5 minutes to make them and the links are right there in the description to buy. If not you are gonna be looking for a lone wolf lineman belt or muddy as those are good ones but still prussik knot based.
This is a good video, but do you have a step by step process on how you setup the belt, and what loop is on the non rope ascender side. I have all the components, but it’s hard to see everything when you’re on the tree
On the non ascender side I just use an over hand knot and then lash the tail to the mainline so it can not come undone and is snag free. To lash the end I just used bowstring serving and wrapped it tight free hand. But any good climbing knot will work great.
The harness is an old discontinued seat of the pants minimalist harness. The carabiner im using on my rig is also discounted or actually redesigned now. Its made by pretzel. Called the attache. But again the new one is not a round shank like the one I have. I know I ordered one last year and was pissed when I saw it was redesigned.
I can not sell them do to the crazy stupid cost of liability insurance. But the video gives like in the description to the few items you need and it takes about 10 minutes to make!
