Climbing the UK's most Northern mountains 

I have to say, I’ve been living vicariously through your videos. I have been up Ben Vrackie when I was 12 years old. And, many years ago saw the Beinn a Ghlo Munroes and the Skye Cuillins. All from practically ground level except when I was up Ben Vrackie and could see for Glen Tilt miles. Please keep making videos of your adventures. :^) And we can certainly see those midgies. Fierce!

I've climbed Spionnaidh and Cranstackie twice . . . once in weather like this and once under a cloudless May sky. Loved both days as I had the mountains totally to myself. I totally agree with those who comment that these wonderful hills get overlooked by those who only get this far north for Ben Hope and/or Foinaven.

Living in Orkney it’s not easy for me to get away and bag as many mountains as I’d like. I tend to do day trips and stick to the northerly hills. I’ve done most of the north coast now down to Lochinver but haven’t been up Cranstackie or Beinn Spionnaidh. I feel another trip coming on.

My first motor bike trip up that road was 2002 nearly in tears of joy .....'am I really still in Uk' was my thought.... done it many times since never gets old 👍 brill stuff as usual 👌👌👌

Your videos are a complete joy! I fear my days of hiking in Scotland or anywhere else are - due to health issues- probably over, but you take me there sans the midge and the effort!! Thank you 🙏 thank you & God bless.

The beasties certainly looked bad in the valley. They keep me off Scottish hills for the summer months, after a terrible experience on my honeymoon in 1981! I was a very keen "bagger" back in the day, not so much these days, but totally agree about having to put up with all weathers rather than wait for perfect days. Although there are still several prominent Munros left because I wasn't prepared to do them in clag :)

AFAIK you don't get much vegetation where the rocks haven't produced enough soil for it to grow in (soil is mainly fragmented rock), and the boulderfields are situated at their current altitude/locations due to the state in which they were left by the retreating glaciers in the Ice Age, which, in geological time, was a mere blink of the eye ago. I'm only helping you out with this info Murray because you weren't wearing those appalling trews on this climb!

Hi Murray, just watching from kinlochbervie! On holiday here and planned on walking these hills but the weather beat us! Walked up connival and BMA and the weather was foul and hard going. Maybe next year. Now I know what awaits us cheers Paul

Great video as usual. Me and my wife love Scotland. Sadly my wife passed Wednesday gone. We travel up from sunny Wigan in Lancashire. We have plots that we purchased from Highland Titles some years ago but have never been able to get to see them. Hopefully be up there early next year so I can scatter her ashes if I'm permitted. We have always loved Scotland and we hoped that one day we would retire together to the Highlands Sadly it isn't to be but at least she can be there now waiting for me when it is my time to be with her again. Sorry if I m putting a downer on things but I thought you might like to know how much we love Scotland. I used to work with a bloke who originally came from Kelso who used to " bloody hell Colin. I think you are probably Scottish than I am. Any keep up the good work. Gives me a bit of a lift when I watch them.

Great video, reassuring to know that very experienced guys can take longer than expected. We did Conival and Ben More a couple of weeks ago, boulder fields galore and knee jarring path on the way down, went to Durness on one of our days holiday, I know what you mean by that very busy single track road.The Assynt aurora more than made up for it at the end of the week.

A great way to live..we have a great VWT5 Transporter and are hoping to go North soon…built in bed with sliding drawers underneath ..a home on wheels where you are free to go any where! Great video..thanks

Definitely see the benefits of owning a wee motor home like that for the trips further north. I’m getting by spending the nights in the car if need be but that extra space in that van would be ideal. The scenery is a lot better further north. I done the 9 Munro’s at Loch Fannich in a day and I got very similar weather to you but when the views opened up it was fabulous. I got caught up in the Munro bagging but when it comes to camping I love the Crianlarich area or Killin. I definitely need to make more effort next summer and get even further than the Fannichs👍 Thanks for sharing Murray. ATB Gaz.

I know it very well and it’s a special place (on a clear day!), although the boulder fields are heavy going. Really nice to see a vlog on some hills in the far north other than Ben Hope, despite the clag! The pathless hills are certainly drawing me to them, especially in the busy season.

Love the t-shirt, I'm a fan and I'm an Aussie so always funny to see Aussie icons in different countries. Those midges were just horrible and I wasn't even there. We have similar bugs here and when I'm outside with my headlight on at night in summer it is a nightmare. So enjoying your videos.

I climbed the exact same route as you in April this year I must admit the bog bashing made it one of my least favourite climbs ever !! But the the views of balnakeil Bay and cape wrath made it all worthwhile il send you some summit photos if you like 👍

Funny, how "rugged" means one thing when applied to hills and completely the opposite when applied to living rooms :) This was an interesting one for me because of the terrain factor. Having crossed Yorkshire moorland without a path, I'm fully aware of just how much ground conditions can slow you down - and this looked worse because of the gradient and the rocks. Oh, and of course the midge! It's odd... ever since I started looking for places to live in Scotland, RU-vid seems to be full of videos featuring hapless vloggers being eaten alive in the highlands... but it won't dissuade me :)

Brilliant video, such a shame you didn't get the views after such a long drive and the physical effort to get up there, but really admire you for taking it as all part of hill walking, you are quite right, if we waited for the good weather days we would miss out on so many adventures! The terrain looked really difficult on this one, great tip on the zig zagging, we will give that a go!😊👍. It must be great to have the van to reach these places, looks so comfy! great video Murry. please don't promote the 500. Try living with all the cars, bikes, racing cars and motorhomes daily. (when it used to be so quiet) Roll on winter, nae midges and a lot less traffic. ATB

That was a tough one Murray especially with no track and that boulder field near the top of Cranstackie. I think I would have got lost on the top good job you knew where you were going. I have done the NC500 what a beautiful drive if the weather is nice. You did well to drive from Perth to your overnight park up. All The Best. Stay Safe.

Do you ever record your hikes using a tracking app like Strava? Be nice for us to see where you parked and start/end from, your route and give us an indication of how long it takes to get to certain points as well as total time to allow. I realise its not a race and would only be a guide at best. Just a suggestion for you. Enjoy the Channel, keep it up!

In cycling terms that zig-zagging across the slope is called 'delivering the post', mimicking the action of a postman crossing from house to house. It's likely an Americanism, but quite a good description...
