Wow, that's so awesome and absolutely breathtaking! I love great Redwoods. I grew up with pines and Redwoods in my backyard as a kid (northern california), and I would see birds perched on top and wish I was them so I could see the world all around and below me. The view from Hyperion is something like a dream. I wish I could sit atop it for as long as I wanted. Redwoods by far are my favorite trees. They always make me feel like I'm surrounded by something bigger than me, in a spiritual way. I can't imagine all that they have lived through, and they are like these pillars of wisdom I wish I could speak to. I just have absolute reverence for these trees and they make me love my home all the more!
redwoods and sequoias are my brothers and sisters to me, when i was a kid, we were moving, but i stoped us because we lived in a redwood forest, and we were going to move to a place that got hot and humid, but we stayed in the northcal redwoods, i still today, and i could not leave the trees
I was in Yosemite back in September. I saw redwoods and sequoias, they're simply amazing. I can't imagine just how awesome it would be to be in the top of the world's tallest tree.
wow that would be so cool to climb to the top of yet spectacularly frightening. think the highest i've ever climbed was about 100 feet which was prety damn scary. but i had no harnes and rope still i think it'd take bals of steel to climb that high
Everyone should plant trees wherever they can. It takes hundreds years to grow big but only takes a day to take 'm down. Plant a tree , take care of it , watch it grow as if it's a child of your own.
I was at the bottom of the 2nd largest tree the Stratosphere and it's hard to see the top of the tree and even more since you are surrounded by lots of tall trees around you.
I have hiked around that area a lot. Pretty Rugged in those particular woods. You would have to find a spot at the same hight as the foot of the tree far enough away to have a clear shot at the top of that tree with no other trees in the way. Not easy. What interested me was that the top was alive. Many of the big ones have ten or more feet of dead wood at the top. I wouldn't want to climb that.
I somehow imagine Tree beard coming along at any point wondering what you're doing lol. It's a shame that so many of these trees have been cut down for timber and how sad that we treat the world as a giant commodity store!
@hagu44 would you rather say "i climbed the world's tallest tree" or "i measured the world's tallest tree using trigonometry" ? Math may be the fast way.. but climbing is the COOL WAY!
Beautiful video. Thank you for raising public awareness of these beautiful forests. Nothing compares to the feeling of standing among these ancient trees and feeling their legacy around you.
look at the video again forward to 332 on the numbers. the tree next to it on the left is taller... maybe he made a mistake in his zeal he climbed the wrong tree
less then 1% left... omg it makes me so depressed. i can only imagine living in these forrest hundreds of years ago at its full potential. Must of been incredible.
He gets to the top, is so excited, and when he pulls the branches away to get a view of what he's accomplished...there's a trunk of an even taller tree staring him in the face. Mocking him. Now THAT would have been a good video haha.
we have helicopters ya know... saying the only way to measure a tree is to climb it is like saying the only way to get across the atlantic ocean is to swim lol
You have to have an accurate measure of from where you are to the base of the tree. You Have to do this on uneven ground far enough away to have a clear shot at the top of the tree in a forest filled with huge trees that are in your way. Any line of sight, top or bottom is next to impossible. You can't do everything with math, sometimes you have to go look.
a) I doubt this is the talles tree, since you can simply not accurately compare all the millions of tall trees. b) wheee, typically human. "look, I can climb on the tallest tree, look how great I am." The next person will say "look, I chopped down the tallest tree" and the next "look, I made a chair out of the tallest tree! Now who is taller! Ha!!"
You're misinformed as well as homophobic. These trees actually support isolated ecosystems, including gardens of dependent plants, in their tops. Very rare, easily damaged. I wish they wouldn't glory-hound stuff like this & turn it into the extreme-sport du jour.
Wow. That tree is beautiful. I'm blown away by how huge it is. Most of the trees in that forest are likely older than written history. They're living history, and are an incredible testament to nature's longevity.
Hyperion is relatively young for a titan of its size, only about 1,000 years or so. I suspect that there aren't many redwoods in the park Hyperion lives in that would crack the 2,000 year mark, probably only a handful. However, in the last five years, more discoveries have been made in remote places in redwood parks, and some true monsters have been found that could be over 4,000 years old. www.mdvaden.com/redwood_year_discovery.shtml
no "our" world is the world of conflict, religious intolerance, war, greed, rich vs. poor, gigantic corporations, pain, sorrow, misery, elation. the worship of money, of sex, of drugs, where is the beauty in OUR world?...
My left ear says this was a silent video with ocassional music and the recorded audio. My right ear says the voice-over was very informative, but boring with no other sounds. I don't know who to believe.
That's pretty cool, climbing the World's TALLEST Tree, but did I read the captions right? 115 METRES tall? Even I'M taller than that :D Perhaps it's just me...
*laugh!* He was later eaten by giant squirrels ...And then the squirrels pooped into a giant crevice where dinosaurs roamed... *CUE LAND OF THE LOST MUSIC!*
Couldn't one get just as accurate a measurement using a drone- drone/ laser measuring combo? I know you lose the experience of the climb, but as a practical point, it seems that climbing a tree might not be necessary, or even the most accurate way to measure.
How old is that tree? Go to the bible and read it.. the great deluge fall in the year about 2370 BC.. so after that trees started to grow on earth again..But remember trees dies too.. so even though that tree came be 1000 years old , it will die some day..What about humans? Our brain have capacity to keep endless information, we die too, Oh Thanks to Jesus who set us free, yes been obedient to him we can live forever.- Not in this wicked world, but in a new one which we are waiting for.
Meh. I'm currently reading "The Wild Trees" and it is a lot more interesting than this video. There is so much in this video that hasn't even been covered. Like how these canopies contain almost as many new species as exists under the ocean. 50% of the worlds organisms exist in trees. This guy didn't even explain what an old growth forest is. Read "The Wild Trees" and you will really understand what goes on in these trees.
also no one i've ever talk about this with has ever answered my disease question with anything more than "he works in mysterious ways" which makes no sense and is a terrible rationalization. god loved the world so much that he gave his only son buuuuuuuut....he didn't love it enough to get rid of disease. "gee, thanks god for sacrificing your son for the world's sins 2000 years ago but i'd rather you cured my malaria-infected child instead"
There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up. If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take 2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companies' pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.
The Abrahamic religions, Dharmic religions, Taoic religions, Indigenous religions, Neopagan religions, Left-Hand Path religions, African diasporic religions, Syncretic religions, Entheogen religions, and New religious movements say all things are possible through their "God". They all have faith, feel, and believe they are right too. Your religion is nothing but a 1 in 270 shot at being right. Let alone if some of the 34,000 Christian denominations are wrong.
is it neccessary to damage the tree in such way only to know how tall it is? First of all - there must be more delicate and technically advanced methods of doing this - moreover, is its height really the most important thing to know about it? I mean, this must be an ecosystem on its own. Can't they build a platform and then investigate different parts of it? Because in the sense of climbing difficulty what he's doing is comedy.
great video what an acheivment !!! to ps3luver123 and Gregarino there is always someone to poo someone elses acheivment it normally comes from someone who has'nt the balls or the inteligence to do anything like this themselves .Gregarino the tree to the left is actually closer to the camera than the tree being climbed put your glasses on buddy!!! "arseholes we all have them but most of us try not to talk from" them
Wow... very cool footage; old growth redwoods are truly amazing organisms and every attempt should be made to minimize man's detrimental impact on their ecology. As for some of the naysayers I noticed below me: You're right; a forest canopy specialest wouldn't have the background to ascertain the location of the world's tallest tree. You win. Come on now... this is the man's life; he knows his shit.
Imagine how old those trees are, and the forests, unbelievable. How everything in the world kept on changing but they remained and have grown older and older and older. Those trees have been here way before us and they're still there. Awesome. It makes my skin crawl when I hear that they're about to extinct, and that there actually are people who would love to lumber them down. How fucked up you gotta be in your head to be able to do that, I wonder?
It would suck because imagine wanting to climb the largest mountain in the world and what you thought was Everest (or whatever the biggest is nowadays) then looking over yonder to see a bigger one would bring up a little bit of sick, you can't deny that. That last comment was a bit unnecessary, I had a great childhood thank you very much.
@beeroosterm Yeah, measuring something that's narrow on top and MUCH wider at the bottom and with branches in the way doesn't seem like it would be very accurate. I wonder how they did the laser thing with all the branches in the way. Bitchin' tree though. Be cool if you could see it FREE standing next to something else (in a pic) for comparison :)
You know , if d= the distance from the tree, æ=the angle of elevation from the ground to the top of the tree when you're d meters away from the tree, and h= the height of the tree, then d•Tan(æ°)=h. So remember kids, if you don't want to exert any energy on silly things like climbing tall trees and measuring them, Stay in school, eat your vegetables, and MOST of all...
Looks like my comment didn't post, so I'm trying again. Thank you for sharing this video! I very much enjoyed reading Richard Preston's article and wished that I could see this tree. Your video has allowed me that privelege. For those of you who think this is bogus, try doing a Google search for "Richard Preston" and "climbing the redwoods". The article is great!
amazing size and the view. das any one know who did the music fatured on the last moments of this video. amazing piano let me know pls had tryed to contactthe guy who posted it here but he must have had fall down during another climbing escapade.haven`t heard back from him ever or even hi don`t know any help appreciated thnx
Guh, my point was you're complaining about somebody else speaking English when you can't even spell such simple things as "You're" or use a capital I, or E in English... There's nothing short hand about those at all, just poor writing skills. I believe now it's my turn to say "Don't speak English". Adieux.
what's the name of th epiano song at the end of the movie? I like it!! pretty cool tree, I'd like to visit that national park someday, Pretty Impressive to walk between thode giant trees, I think you would realize how tiny you actually are in the world... too bad I won't be able to visit anytime soon because I live in Europe...
BTW thanks for taking all my criticism with dignity and not ranting and raving about god etc. it may seem like i'm attacking your beliefs but i'm not, i'm just trying to get someone to explain to me why they believe a tree is so beautiful that it had to have been created by a supernatural being and not billions of years of evoltion beginning from a single molecule.
Well - first he's bending and breaking lots of fern, then he's shooting a hole in the tree to climb up and then he most likely breaks the branches of the tree. It's like: look, I want to throw this old washing machine off the cliff and watch it tumble down - because I am such a oceanographic coastal scientist! Can't you be fan of something without damaging it?
This isn't a case of one-upmanship: northern California has the climate most condusive to big trees, just like the American heartland has the only climate and geography on the planet predisposed to massive tornadoes, and only Australia has the conditions for the world's largest organism, the Great Barrier Reef to exist.
Why "don't argue"? Are you saying I shouldn't question whether your facts are correct? The Redwoods may not have been the tallest historically, anyway - there have been Douglas Firs recorded that were about 140m tall. A recent article speculated that ~140m is about as tall as any tree can go, due to physical limits.
I don't think you could accurately measure a tree by only climbing it and dropping a tape measure, you can't climb up to the tippy top because the branches are too skinny! It'd be best to apply some trigonometry. Your vertices's would still have to be up in the trees but alot more accurate than trying make a guess from the highest climbable portion of the tree.
It may not be the world's tallest tree, but it's the closest one that today's specialists know of and if there is one any taller it would be very nearby and the difference would be minute. And for clarification, a sequoia IS a Redwood. "Redwood" is a colloquial term used to describe three species of coniferous trees endemic to California.
Just different magic. Why does it have to get to this childish thing of: "my sport is better than yours", or "my team beats up yours". The guy on the video is really passionate about his thing, not pompous. It would be the same if some one told you: "mountains? crap, I skydive, and that it really is a view, mountains are just rocks on the ground"
I hope that in this video, there is some recognition of how it is contributing to inconsiderate treatment of these magnificent trees. Do we have NO imagination that we can't recognize that other "beings" on this planet are just as valid as we ourselves? All those climbing these ancient trees are contributing to their demise. One or two scientists help us to understand what is taking place up there in the canopy. However - do you remember a teacher pointing out to you as a young student - if one person picks a flower, ok, but if everybody picks a flower, they will all be gone! And your teacher was right. If you truly revere these trees, admire them with your mind, and let them be here for your great, great grandchildren!
How the shit is the world's tallest tree unknown until 2006 when it's only 4 miles away from somewhere you can (presumably) reach by car? Whatever, it's fascinating regardless. Maybe there's an even bigger one somewhere out there. Crazy to think we're STILL discovering these things.
not QUITE that simple, you'd need a string that parallel's the curve of the earth as a reference line from a certain point on the tree, preferably near the ground, if the ground slopes down from the tree, that would be easy to accomplish, but if it slopes up, it could be a little harder.
