Climbing up the Stairway to Heaven: Austria's 43 meter sky ladder 700 meters above the ground!

The Stairway to Heaven in Austria, also known as the Donnerkogel Klettersteig is a 43 meter sky ladder that hangs over a gorge, 700 meters in the air. It connects two mountains and allows you to climb the summit of Großer Donnerkogel. This is one of many summits of the Gosaukamm Range in northwestern Austria.
This klettersteig or via ferrata is not for those who fear heights. The ladder is made of steel cable and shakes and sways as you climb up it. You're hooked in with just two carabiners connected to your harness, 700 meters above the ground. Would you climb up it? Have you climbed it? Hi! Thank you so much! We stayed in Gosau at Gasthof Gosauschmied and it was only a 5 minute drive to the climb. There wasn't much around there though, just a few other hotels and maybe a bakery. You can also stay in Halstatt which is larger and gorgeus and only about 30 minutes away from the climb by car. Let us know if you have more questions! I want to do it after making some other ferratas and high tours! But I really don’t enjoy the way down the mountains so I have to ask, it is very difficult? Like inclined and full of lose stones in a small path with the cliff next to it or what kind of path you have to go down?

You should totally do it! The way down sucks, but the ferrata is definitely worth it! The path down is quite rocky and you'll be tired, but nothing too dangerous. Let us know if you end up climbing it! Enjoy! 😀

I have done a lot of rock climbing, but never with the cables or via ferreta. Is the equipment easy to use? Do you reckon it can be done as a first time?

Great question! With you rock climbing experience, you're almost ready! I suggest getting at least one or two via ferratas under your belt before trying this one. It is very difficult after the ladder. Good luck!

Hey, I'm planning to climb the donnerkogel via ferrata soon. I have 2 questions: 1. Apart from the expense for renting the gear and the cable transport cost and food, etc. Is there an additional cost just specifically to attempt the ferrata? 2. I'm traveling alone and I can't fly a drone, is there any way I can get some drone footage of myself? Do they offer that, if they do not, is there any other way?

Hi!! There’s no additional cost to do the ferrata ☺️ and the Ferrata is not supervised by anyone, so there won’t be anyone there to offer drone services but maybe you could make a friend at the ladder and trade with them? Good luck and have fun!!
