TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY
MEDICAL CENTER: "Impasse" - 10/1/1973, CBS
Lois Nettleton guest stars as Annie Claymor, an excellent psychiatrist who turns out to be (gasp!) a lesbian! Much preachy dialogue follows as she challenges the prejudices of her friend, series hero Joe Gannon (Chad Everett), who was romantically interested in her.
This was just before the American Psychiatric Association declassified homosexuality as a disease.
Lois Nettleton would play a lesbian again in 1986: In the classic GOLDEN GIRLS episode "Isn't It Romantic?" she plays Dorothy's former college roommate, Jean, who falls in love with Rose.

I loved this show and remember seeing this episode. I was in high school. The next day, it was the talk of the school. Quite a controversial subject in its day. Especially casting the very beautiful Ms. Nettleton to play the part.

This was such a good episode. Very rare if it's time and well written. Good acting, also. Just happened to watch it again after years the other day. Great series.

Cutting edge series. You find that many series in the 70s deal with taboo topics , yes even the Waltons. Ms. Nettleton was a fantastic actress.

Think she was also on All That Glitters, a Norman Lear production that had a role reversal world - all women were dominating in business.

I’m impressed. Who else played multiple sympathetic homosexual characters in the 70s and 80s?
@stevencapsuto873
@stevencapsuto873 2 года назад
Martin Sheen twice in 1971 and 1972... though the first of those sympathetic characters got murdered by his boyfriend, who was less sympathetic. Sheen also played the homophobic dad in the groundbreaking coming-out TV movie CONSENTING ADULT in the 1980s. And of course, now he's on GRACE AND FRANKIE.

@Joni O'Connor It was the edgiest show in television during its run. Several episodes were pre-empted by rural American stations due to uproar over homosexual themes, child abuse, sexual abuse, and gender dysphoria. My grandma would just about knock the TV off the stand if she saw this show on in her house.

I remember this scene as a kid and had to ask my mother what a lesbian was.This episode was handled with dignity at a time when if there was a gay character on TV they were usually the butt of jokes.
